Jennie Wade House, Gettysburg, PA
I went to see the Jennie Wade House in Gettysburg, PA. She was a civilian. During the Battle of Gettysburg she carried water to the Union soldiers all day long, even though her dress got wet. She also made food for the soldiers. She was making bread for her family when a bullet came through her door and shot her in the back. The bread box in the picture was Jennie's bread box.
After Jennie was shot, her family went down in the cellar to hide with some soldiers. Her family was her little brother, her mother, her sister and her sister's brand new baby. When they were leaving for the cellar, a bomb came in the house and blew a hole in the wall and the family went through the hole to escape. They took Jennie's body and put it in the cellar and covered it with a blanket. They stayed in the cellar until the battle was over.
Jennie is buried in the cemetery in Gettysburg. Her real name was Mary Virginia Wade, Jennie was her nickname. She was 20 years old when she died. Her family was poor. The people of Gettysburg raised money to put the marker on her grave. She was the only civilian killed during the Battle of Gettysburg.
