Martin, David R., see Jonathan Martin.
Martin, John Ogden, see Jonathan Martin.
Martin, Jonathan and family. The Martin monument memorializes several members of the family of Jonathan Martin and Lydia Read. Two of their sons, John Ogden Martin and David Martin, were killed during the Civil War and are buried elsewhere—yet they are listed on the stone. Lydia Read Martin died in Iowa. After Jonathan's death she made her home with her children in both New Jersey and Iowa. She was living in Muscatine, Iowa with her daughter Lidia Anna Martin Wintermute (wife of Baltus Keen Wintermuter) when she died. It is uncertain whether she is buried in Union Brick or somewhere in Iowa. Jonathan Martin is probably buried in Union Brick, as is he and Lydia's son Philetus Bradley Martin. Philetus's ex-wife, Sarah Catherine Vaughan Martin is also buried in Union Brick, but on the other side of the cemetery. The Martin monument has four sides each of which is inscribed side one is for Jonathan, side two is for David and John Ocden, side three for Lydia and side four for Philetus. The monument was made by M. Laroe of Blairstown (photograph 11-22-04).
Martin, David R., born Aug 3, 1830; Co. K 49 O.V.I., died in camp Nov. 13, 1861; J. Ogden Martin Born Feb. 11, 1833; Co. B 15 N.J.V.I., Killed at Spotsylvania, Va. May 12 1864 (side two). David R. Martin died at Camp Nevin, Hardin County, Kentucky while his unit was in winter quarters. and was buried in Cave Hill National Cemetery, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. He was married to Drusilla Everitt. The couple had settled in Wyandot County, Ohio before the Civil War began. There is also a stone for him in Old Sycamore Cemetery, Sycamore Ohio. John Ogden Martin was killed in action, probably during the battle of the Bloody Angle near Spotsylvania, Virginia. He may be buried in Virginia. John was married to Louisa Knight (transcript 7-2-99; photo 11-22-04).
Martin, Jonathan born Sept. 3 1794, died Jan. 29 1867, We shall meet (side one). Jonathan Martin was the son of Benjamin Martin. His mother's name has been given as either Rachel (unknown last name) or Margaret Reynolds. He and Lydia married in about 1819 and settled in Hardwick Township. They were early members of the Christian Church. Jonathan died in New Jersey (transcript 7-2-99; photo 3-27-03).
Martin, Lydia, wife of Jonathan Martin, born June 5, 1801, died Aug. 23, 1883, Beyond the River (side three). Lydia was the daughter of John Read and Elizabeth Ogden. She and Jonathan had nine children. Most of their children left New Jersey. This included Sarah Martin Keen Raub, Elizabeth Martin Summerbell, Hannah Martin Allen, David R. Martin, Lidia Anna Wintermute, and Jonathan Oliver Martin. Three of the Martin sons stayed in the area: Benjamin, John Ogden and Philetus Bradley. Lydia died in Iowa while living with her daughter Lidia Anna. It is not known if her body was shipped east for burial (transcript 7-2-99; photo 3-27-03).
Martin, Philetus Bradley Father and Mother [for Jonthan and Lydia]; Philetus Bradley Martin, 1845 - 1928 (side three). Philetus was the youngest of the nine children of Jonathan and Lydia Martin. He married his second cousin Sarah Catherine Vaughn, a daughter of Benjamin O. Vaughn and Margaret Freese. They were separated by at least 1900 and divorced by 1910. Philetus's second wife's name was Irene. Sarah Catherine Vaughan Martin is buried in Union Brick. It is not known where Irene is buried. Philetus is probably buried in his parents plot. A look at the photograph will show that his name was probably a much later addition to the stone. He may not have originally intended to be buried with them. The end of his first marriage may have dictated that he be buried there. His second wife was only 53 when he died (transcript 7-2-99; photo 11-22-04).

Her father was a farmer in Warren County, but Minnie left the farm when her parents separated. She and her mother moved in with her brother Darius, who lived in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey . Minnie was a school teacher. She married Charles B. Williams and settled in Midland Park, Bergen County, New Jersey. Minnie may not be buried in Union Brick Cemetery. Mary's is the gray one to the left, Gabriels's is the red weathered one in center and Elizabeth's is the small marble stone on the right. The stone of Gabriel and Mary's son Benjamin is just visible in the next row behind these Ogden stones. It is just to the left of Mary's stone and has an American flag by it. The white slab stone for Elizabeth's husband, John Reed (as given on the stone) may be seen in the background leaning on the left side of the left pine tree (9-26-05).
