The graves are to the right of the gate about mid-way back the cemetery (transcription 6-25-83).

He married twice, first to Mary Fortune or Fortner and second to Margaret Ann "Peggy" Cooke. Margaret is buried with Aaron, her stone is to the left of his in the cemetery. There is no stone for Aaron's first wife Mary. Two other individuals are buried in this grouping. The first is Sarah Ann Read Coursen, Aaron's second child by his first wife Mary. The other is Margaret Eliza Read. She was the daughter of Aaron and Margaret's only son Samuel Cooke Read. The graves are in a line directly near the Pitt Wildrick plot along the front (or eastern) fence of the cemetery. The graves are in order from left to right: Sarah Read Coursen, Margaret Cooke Read, Aaron Read, Margaret Eliza Read (transcription 6-25-83; photo 3-27-2003).

Cooke, Margaret Ann. Margaret wife of Aaron Read died May 11, 1853 aged 72 years & [illegible]. Peggy Cooke was the daughter of Levi and Catherine Cooke, she was born 23 September 1782. There are two small stonew between the weathered stone and that of Sarah Sutton Read which mark the graves of Isaac and Elizabeth Kerr, infant children of Sarah's granddaughter Phebe Read Kerr (11-24-2004).

Read, Isaac, Sr. The thumbnail is a link to an overview of the graves of Isaac Read, Sr. and his wife Mary Shackleton. Individual stones are listed below (Transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

Read, Isaac, Sr. In Memory of Isaac Read Sr. who departed this life March 1 1838 aged 75 years [poem illegible]. Isaac Read, Sr. was the eldest of the 11 children of Joseph and Sarah Read. He married Mary Shackleton, a daughter of Richard and Mary Shackleton. Isaac is listed in Snell's 1881 transcript of the cemetery. Snell gives his date of death as 1858. This is in error. Isaac's will was admitted for probate in Warren County in March 1838, this clearly bears out the date of 1838 for the date of death on the stone (Transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

Read, Mary In Memory of Mary Read wife of Isaac Read who departed this life May 19 A.D. 1835, age 73. Mary was the daughter of Richard and Mary Shackleton. She is listed in Snell's 1881 transcript for the cemetery. Our dates are in agreement (Transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

Read, Isaac S. The photograph is an overview of the graves of the family of Isaac S. Read. Isaac was the second son of David Read and Anna Middlesworth. He was born 9 November 1810 and died 1 September 1887. From left to right they are Abraham Read (the small stone, son of Isaac and Charlotte Read) and Charlotte Snyder Read (Isaac's first wife). There is no stone for Isaac in the cemetery, although there is certainly space between Abraham and Charlotte's grave for another burial. Isaac's second wife, Mary N. Hankinson, is buried with her first husband, Ira King Wilson, in Johnsonburg Christian Church Cemetery in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County. Isaac does not appear to be buried in that cemetery. It is possible that he is in an unmarked grave between Abraham and Charlotte (9-25-2005; see also overview photograph of the family of David Read).

Abraham son of Isaac S. & Charlotte Read died Aug 10 1845 aged 2 months & 11 days. This bud was only, A while on earth to stay, But like a glowing bloom, Brighter than the day. Abraham was the second child and only son of Isaac and Charlotte Read. Charlotte died about 8 days after Abraham was born. His stone is leaning against his footstone. The overview picutre shows where the stone was set originally (the marble slab in the foreground. Transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

Charlotte died about eight days after Abraham was born (transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

Reed, John died April 20 1814 aged 45 years, 2 months & 4 days. John was the fourth child and third son of Joseph Read and Sarah Sutton. Note that John's name is spelled R-e-e-d, his descendants used the R-e-a-d- form. John married Elizabeth Ogden, daughter of Gabriel Ogden and Mary Shotwell. After John's death she married William Wintersteen. Elizabeth is buried in another part of Union Brick cemetery next to her father and mother. John is buried next to his brother Joseph Read and his family. See also Gabriel Ogden and Joseph Read (transcript 6-25-83; photo 11-22-04).

He died without a wife or children and his estate was divided among his 66 surviving first cousins, both Read and Coleman. His stone lines on the ground next to the stone of his uncle John Read, brother of his father (transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

Read, Jonah Howell, see Aaron Read.

Read, Joseph In Memory of Joseph Read who died April 18 1792 aged 58 years, 9 months [stone broken]. Joseph was the original Read settler in Sussex County. He first appears in the records in 174, although he was probably there earlier. He married Sarah Sutton. They were the parents of 11 children: Isaac Read, Sr., Hannah Read Ogden Vaughan, James Read, John Read, Phebe Read Kirkpatrick, Azuba Read Newman, Joseph Read, Sarah Read Manning, David Read, Samuel Read and Aaron Read (transcript 6-25-83; photo 3-27-03). Please note. Joseph's stone was almost completely gone on my last visit to Union Brick. I am in the process of having it looked at by stone cutters to have it repaired if possible. If not, I will try to purchase a replacement that includes either a photo of the original or a carving of the cherubs head. This is probably not going to happen over night. If you visit the cemetery and find the stone missing, assume that it is either being repaired or that I am saving for a replacement.

Read, Sarah In Memory of Sarah Read who died Augst the 31ft 1792, aged 49 years, 6 months, 11 days. The marble stone leaning against the left side of the tree is that of Joseph's brother John Read.

Read, Joseph. In Memory of Joseph Read who departed this life November 11, 1806 aged 29 years, 10 months & 1 day. Is this the case that all must die, Will death no ages spare? He married Mary Kirkpatrick by whom he had at least five children before he died. His known child were: John K., Daniel, David, Stephen and Joseph (transcript 6-25-83; photo 9-26-05).

After his death she married James Giles Newman, the brother of Joseph Newman, who was married to Joseph Read's sister Azuba. When Mary died she was buried under the name of Read, not Newman. James Giles Newman married Mary's sister Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, widow of Daniel Predmore. James and Elizabeth settled in Ohio (transcript 6-25-83; photo 11-24-04).
