Student Project ideas for a Sustainable Earth

To address the 21st century problem of global warming we must move beyond gloom and doom, and we must do this now. Inaction is failure, but strong positive action now will leverage enormous success for years to come. We have already spent too long talking about the severity of the problem and not promoting the many and diverse solutions that will be needed.

At a recent Sally Ride Educator's Conference at NOAA in Silver Spring Maryland the majority of the speaker were still stuck back providing the latest and most authoritative information on the reality of climate change. Only a very few topics like the "Wet Feet, Dirty Hands" active ecology related projects in Maryland provided clear problem solving experiences for students.

We need many more topics that will give students a positive experience in building a sustainable world. Below are a number of such topics and a start at a discussion on turning them into suitable exercises for the classroom and laboratory.

The time to argue over the likelihoods of the great problems of the 21st century, like global climate change, is past. It is now time move ahead to develop solutions.
