after doing graduate work at the university of maryland, i did a postdoc
at cornell.  i had a real sense of returning to an intellectual home when
i moved to ithaca.  wonderful place, to live, to study.  miss brann gave a
lecture on melancholia when i was a student, she quoted a phrase, "poverty
among riches."  observing the hunger for good grades among the cornell
undergraduates, i often thought of this phrase.  it seemed sad to me that
so many people were living in an earthly paradise and unable to take
pleasure in it.
