JOHN "MILTON" BRUGLER4
1007. JOHN "MILTON" BRUGLER5 (Susanna Moot Konkle4, Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 5 October 1848 in Mt Hermon, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 21 June 1883 at New Brunswick, New Jersey (Cummins 1911; Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery). An earlier version of Read Family Connections gave his date of death as 14 August 1888 in Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey. This data came from the Latter Day Saints files (LDS Disc #7, Pin 938373 and Film #1985574), but it appears to be in error. The 1883 date is from Milton's grave stone in Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery, as well as from George Wycoff Cummins's History of Warren County, New Jersey (1911:398). In 1860, Milton (as the census called him), lived at home with his parents in Blairstown Township and attended school (1860 United States Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 565, 18 July 1860). Milton's father died the year after the 1860 census. By 1870, Milton's mother was running the farm and Milton and his brother Aaron worked on the farm as laborers (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 31 A-B, 5 July 1870). Milton married 29 December 1870, at Hope, New Jersey, Mary Elizabeth Decker, the daughter of Isaac Janson Decker and Mary Sutton. She was born 1 December 1848 in Lebanon, New Jersey and died 28 October 1907, at Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey (Cummins 1911; Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery). Mary Elizabeth's brother, Isaac Dayton Decker, married Milton's second cousin once removed (336) Martha Read4 (Aaron Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1). In 1880, the Milton and Mary Elizabeth lived on a farm in Blairstown Township with their four childen and Milton's mother. Milton was employed as a farmer, while Mary Elizabeth was "keeping house" (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 191, page 286A, 7 June 1880). Milton was also a breeder of thoroughbred stock. In 1883, the family evidently lived in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where Milton was "the superintendent of the large stock farm of James Neilson..." (Cummins 1911:39). Milton died in June 1883 and was buried with his father and sister in the Brugler plot in what is now Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery. Mary Elizabeth lived until 1907 and was buried with Milton. See his parents page for complete cemetery inscriptions, which were transcribed 24 March 2004.

The couple were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. On New Years Day 1908, Van Cleve became the superintendent of the Sunday School of his church. He was still in this capacity in 1911 (Cummins 1911:399). The 1910 census places Van Cleve, Grace and their son Carl in a rented home on Washington Street in Hackettstown. The census states that Van Cleve was a teacher in the Public Schools, but makes no mention of his being Vice-Principal in the Hackettstown High School. At the time of the census, the couple had only one child (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 127, Election District 1, Hackettstown Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 18-19 April 1910). The Bruglers were very active in their church, the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown. In 1916, Dayton Brugler was the Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School and he was a Sunday School teacher. He was also President of the Epworth League. Mary Brugler was the Vice President of the "Win One" Bible Class, the Vice President of the Willing Workers Society, and the Vice President of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society (Burd 1916). By 1920, the Bruglers were living on East Street in Blairstown. Dayton owned his own photography shop in the town (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 156, Blairstown Town, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 12B, 22 January 1920). The 1929 History and Directory of Warren County New Jersey lists Dayton Brugler, photographer and Mrs. Dayton Brugler, housewife, as residents of Blairstown, no street address is given (Sampanore 1929:2p).
