READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
CHARLES EDWARD BRUGLER and ROSA ANNA BUNNELL4
1009. Charles Edward Brugler5 (Susanna Moot Konkle4, Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 1855 in Warren County, New Jersey and died January 1929, at his home in Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (Tice n.d.). In 1860, he lived at home with his parents on their farm in Blairstown Township (1860 United States Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 565, 18 July 1860). His father died the following year. By 1870, Charles's mother was running the farm, while his brothers Milton and Aaron worked on the farm as laborers, Charles appears to have been unemployed. He did attend school during the 1870 census year (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 31 A-B, 5 July 1870). Charles married his second cousin, (3001.) Rosa Anna Bunnell5 (Mary Margaret Lanterman4, Rachael Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), on 15 April 1877 in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Film #2034476). She was born 10 June 1857 in Knowlton Township (LDS Batch #C509861), the daughter of Henry Bunnell and his second wife, Mary Margaret Lanterman4. Mary Margaret Lanterman and Charles's mother's Susanna Moot Konkle were first cousins.
Charles was a printer. For awhile he worked with his brother-in-law, Jacob L. Bunnell, the founder of the Blairstown Press. Jacob Bunnell started the paper on 7 February 1877 (it is still in print today) as a 28 column weekly. Bunnell ran the paper until 1883, when it as taken over by Vincent Fuller and William Webb (Anon 1939). In 1885, he bought the Sussex Independent, Which was printed in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey (In 1924, the Sussex Independent, and the New Jersey Herald were merged into one paper: the New Jersey Herald). Charles joinned his brother-in-law at the Newton paper sometime around 1885 or 1886. The 1886 Warren County History and Directory, lists Charles S.[sic] Brugler, printer as a resident of Blairstown.
On 1 November 1889, Charles bought the Knoxville Courier, a small paper that served the town of Knoxville in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The paper had been established exactly seven years before Brugler bought it, but it had already been through several owners. The paper was a family affair and was published by the Bruglers into at least the 1920. In 1942, the paper merged with Free Press which served the Galeton area of Potter County, Pennsylvania. This paper is still in print as the Potter Leader-Enterprise published in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. Whether Rosa Bunnell Brugler was part of the enterprise is currently unknown. She was a well educated woman—a graduate of the Blair Presbyterial Academy in Blairstown (Anon 1898). However, while the directories and census tell us the occupations of the men in the family, they tend to gloss over the participation of women in family businesses.
The 1899 Hanford Directory of Tioga County, Pa lists Charles E. Brugler, editor and Publisher of the Knoxville Courier, and job printer at 3 East Main Street, with his house and office at West Main Street. The same directory also listed C. Harvey Brugler, printer, son of Charles E., house at 70 West Main Street; and Lewis J. Brugler, printer, son of Charles E., house at 70 West Main Street. The 1909 Anderson's Directory and Reference of Tioga County, Pennsylvania lists Charles E. Brugler, wife Rosa A., as Editor and proprietor of the Knoxville Courier, with office and residence on West Main Street. C. Harvey Brugler was the foreman, his home was at 26 Water Street. C. Harvey Brugler continued in the family business, when his father died in 1929 Harvey was with the New Jersey Herald.
Charles and Rosa had four sons: C. Harvey, Lewis, Milton and Bunnell. The three older boys were all born in New Jersey. Bunnell was born inTioga County. In 1910, Chalres and Rosa lived in their Main Street home in Knoxville. Two of their sons, Milton and Bunnell, were still at home. Milton, like his brothers Harvey and Lewis, was printer. Bunnell was still in school. Harvey Brugler lived with his wife and two childern a few houses away from his parents on Main Street. Harvey was employed as a foreman in a printing house. Charles and Rosa Brugler had a boader, Jennie Ulana (age 48) who worked as a printer (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7A, 20 April 1910). The Bruglers continued to have boarders who were associated with the printing business over the next decade. In 1920, Ethel and Cora Newell, boarded with the family. Both women were typographers in a printing office. Jennie Ulana and the Newell women probably all worked for the Knoxville Courier. Charles and Rose never owned their home on West Main Street. Both the 1910 and 1920 census indicate that they were renting the home. The Hanford and Anderson directories listed the West Main Street address as both the home and office of Charles Brugler in 1899 and 1909. It is possible that the Bruglers no longer used the building as an office in 1920. The 1920 census shows that the West Main Street buliding was a duplex, or two apartments at the very least. Guernsey and Eva Davis were renting that portion of the house (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5A, 5 January 1920). There is no second household listed in the 1910 census.
Charles Brugler died in January 1929. Rosa went to live with her son Milton and his wife Agnes, in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. The 1930 census shows Rosa as a resident of their home at 307 Union Ave. Milton was a newspaper editor (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-81, Ward 15, City of Williamsport, Woyalsock Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, sheet 3B, 3 April 1930). Rosa died in 1945. She and Charles are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Knoxville, Deerfield Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (Tice n.d.).
CHILDREN OF CHARLES EDWARD BRUGLER AND ROASA ANNA BUNNELL:
2982. (i.) CHARLES HARVEY BRUGLER6, was born circa 1880 probably in Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. He appeared in the 1889 Hanford Directory of Tioga County, Pa as C. Harvey Brugler, printer, son of Charles E., house at 70 West Main Street. The 1903 birth registration of his eldest son Charles E. Brugler, Jr., gives his occupation as Clerk (Tice n.d.). however, in the 1909 Anderson's Directory and Reference of Tioga County, Pennsylvania Harvey's occupation is given as forman. He is listed as C. Harvey Brugler, foreman, house at 26 Water Street. The 1910 census makes it clear that he was working as a forman in the printing business (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7A, 20 April 1910). Charles married at Sabinsville, Pennsylvania, on 7 November 1901, Ada Charlotte Boardman, the daughter of E.A. and Clara Boardman. Ada was 23 and Harvey was 21. The wedding service was performed by Rev. A.V. Bedchian, pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Sabinsville (marriage license number 3277, Tice, n.d.). Ada was born in Michigan. Both her parents were natives of Pennsylvania. By 1910, Harvey and Ada and two of their children were living a few doors away from Charles and Rosa Brugler on Main St. in Knoxville. The couple was renting their home. Charles was still employed as a printing foreman. In 1929, when his father died, Harvey had left Pennsylvania and was with the New Jersey Herald in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey. The 1930 census places Charles, Ada, and their daughter Clare at 45 Halsted Street in Newton. The family rented their home for $45 per month. They owned a radio. The census gives Harvey's occupation as printer for a weekly newspaper. The family also had a roomer, 65 year old Jean H. Stone, a native of New York. She was not employed (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-20, Newton - Town, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 23 April 1930). Children of Harvey Brugler and Ada Boardman:
2994. (i.) CHARLES EDWARD BRUGLER, Jr.7, was born 15 March 1903 in Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and died unknown. He appears on the 1910 census as a resident of his parent's home in Knoxville. He was also attending school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7A, 20 April 1910).
2995. (ii.) CLAIR R. BRUGLER7, was born circa 1908 in Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and died unknown. She appears on the 1910 census as a resident of her parent's home in Knoxville (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7A, 20 April 1910). In 1930, she lived with her parents in Newton, New Jersey. Clair was employed as a clerk in a bank (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-20, Newton - Town, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 23 April 1930).
2983. (ii.) LEWIS JUDSON BRUGLER6, was born 27 August 1881 (WWI draft registration card, Ancestry.com), probably in Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. He appears in the 1899 Hanford Directory of Tioga County, Pa as Lewis J. Brugler, printer, son of Charles E., house at 70 West Main Street. The West Main address was the family home. By 1918, Lewis had moved to Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. His draft registration card for World War I gives his address as 111 Market St. He worked for Girt Publishing Company in advertising. The company was located on West 3rd Street in Williamsport. The draft card also gives us clues to Lewis's physical appearance. He had brown eyes and dark brown hair. His height and weight were not recorded (WWI draft registration card, Ancestry.com). He married circa 1920, Anna W. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1891 in Pennsylvania. Her father was from New York, her mother from Virginia. Lewis was still a resident of Williamsport in 1930. He lived at 415 Hastings Street with his wife Anna and their daughter Jane. Lewis was employed as an advertiser, the census states that he was an employer so it was probably his own company. He and Anna did not own their house, they were renting their home for $40 a month. The family did own a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-51, First Ward, South Williamsport Borough, Lycoming County, Pennsyvlania, sheet 6A, 8 April 1930).
2996. (i.) JANE BRUGLER7, was born circa 1922, probably in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania and died unknown. In 1930, she was 7 years old, resided with her parents in Williamsport and attended school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7A, 20 April 1910).
2984. (iii.) MILTON W. BRUGLER6, was born circa 1887, probably in Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. In 1910, he lived at home with his parents in their home on Main Street in Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Milton worked in the family business as a printer (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Borough of Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 7A, 20 April 1910). He married circa 1914, Agnes (Last name unknown). She was born 2 August 1887 in New York and died January 1967 (Social Security Death Index). In 1930, the couple lived in a rented home at 307 Union Avenue in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Milton was employed as the editor of a newspaper. His recently widowed mother, Rosa Bunnell Brugler lived with the couple. Milton and Agnes did not have children in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-81, Ward 15, City of Williamsport, Woyalsock Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, sheet 3B, 3 April 1930). Sometime between 1930 and 1951, the couple lived in Washington D.C. Agnes's social security number was issued to her in D.C. However, her final residence in 1967 was in Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index).
2985. (iv.) RUSSELL "BUNNELL" BRUGLER, Sr.6, was born 9 December 1894 at the family home on Alba Street in Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He was the only one of Charles and Rosa Brugler's children to be born in Pennsylvania. He died April 1963 in Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index; Tioga County, Pennsylvania, GenWeb). In 1910, he lived with his family in their home on West Main Street. The family had moved there after his birth in 1894 and sometime before the 1899 Hanford Directory of Tioga County, Pa was published. By that date the Bruglers lived on West Main Street. In 1910, Bunnell was still attending school and was not yet employed, although he may have had odd and part time jobs at the Knoxville Courier, the paper that his father owned and edited. Bunnell married on 11 May 1916, at Knoxville, Beulah Jessie Bottum, the daughter of George Whitman Bottum and Lottie May Crandall. She was born 17 May 1891 in Knoxville and died unknown (Oliver 1970). The couple had two children in Pennsylvania, June (born 1917 in Knoxville) and Bunnell (born in early 1919 in Westfield). The moved to Union Township in Broome County, New York. Their third child, Robert, was born there in February 1920. However, when the 1920 census was taken, Bunnell was listed at twice. He is listed with his family in Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He and Beluah lived there with their two oldest chlidren, June and Bunnell. The family rented their home. Bunnell was employed as a printer. A 15 year old girl name May Whitman lived with the family. The census describes her as a daughter, but she was 10 years younger than Bunnell and 13 years younger than Beulah. She was probably a cousin of Beulah's (Beulah's father's middle name was Whitman). This first listing for Bunnell was done on 15 January 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 171, Westfield Borough, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 15 January 1920). Fifteen days later he was living in a rooming house at 213 Washington Ave. in Endicott Village in Union Township, Broome County, New York. The census states that he was married, but Beulah and the children were not with him. Bunnell was employed as a printer. The census errs in giving Ohio as the birthplace of both his parents (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 237, Endicott Village, Union Township, Broome County, New York, sheet 9A, 31 January 1920). Beulah probably joinned him shorlty after the census was taken, as their son Robert was born in Union Township on 27 February 1920 (Olivier 1970). The family continued to move around between 1920 and 1930. In 1930, Bunnell and Beulah lived with their four children at 117 Academy Street, Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. The family rented the home for $35 per month. Bunnel was employed as as advertiser by a department store (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44-14, Ward 3, Lewiston Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 9 April 1930). The family had been living in Lewiston since at least the fall of 1928 when their son Ray was born (Oliver). Children of Bunnell Brugler and Beulah Bottum:
2997. (i.) JUNE BRUGLER7, was born 10 June 1917 at Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and died unknown (Oliver 1970). She appears on the 1920 census as a small child living with her parents in Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 171, Westfield Borough, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 15 January 1920). The family moved to Endicott, Union Township, Broome County, New York shortly after the census was taken. Her father was living there in late January 1920 and her brother Robert was born there in February 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 237, Endicott Village, Union Township, Broome County, New York, sheet 9A, 31 January 1920: Oliver 1970). In 1930, June lived with her parents at 117 Academy Street in Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44-14, Ward 3, Lewiston Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 9 April 1930).
2998. (ii.) RUSSELL "BUNNELL" BRUGLER, Jr.7, was born 3 February 1919 at Westfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and died unknown (Oliver 1970). He appears on the 1920 census as a toddler living with his parents in Westfield (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 171, Westfield Borough, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, 15 January 1920). The family moved to Endicott, Union Township, Broome County, New York shortly after the census was taken. His father was living there in late January 1920 and his brother Robert was born there in February 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 237, Endicott Village, Union Township, Broome County, New York, sheet 9A, 31 January 1920: Oliver 1970). In 1930, Bunnell lived with his parents at 117 Academy Street in Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44-14, Ward 3, Lewiston Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 9 April 1930).
2999. (iii.) ROBERT BOTTUM BRUGLER7, was born February 1920 at Union, Broome County, New York and died unknown (Oliver 1970). In 1930, he lived with his parents at 117 Academy Street in Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44-14, Ward 3, Lewiston Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 9 April 1930).
3000. (iv.) RAY BUNNELL BRUGLER7, was born 22 October 1928 at Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania and died unknown (Oliver 1970). He appears on the 1930 census as a 1 and half year old toddler living with his parents at 117 Academy Street in Lewiston, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44-14, Ward 3, Lewiston Borough, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 9 April 1930).
