102. REBECCA MARIA READ4 (Richard Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 8 June 1830 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 28 February 1892, possibly in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She married John West, Jr. between 1850 and 1855. He was the son of John West, Sr. and Elizabeth Cazely (or Caseby).
John West was born 31 July 1829 in New Jersey and died 12 May 1897, possibly in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. John West's farm was within the bounds of Joseph Read's original farm. In the 1880s, the farm was located in Blairstown Township. John was appointed to the building and locating committees of the newly formed Ebenezer Methodist Church in Frelinghuysen Township, on 4 February 1859. He was elected to the church's Board of Trustees on 17 February 1859. He served on this board with his brother-in-law, Jonah Read. John also served as the Sunday School Superintendent between 1870 and 1880. In 1860, Johon and Rebecca lived in Blairstown Township, their post office was Blairstown. They owned a farm valued at $6,090 and had a personal estate worth $1,000. Living in their household were John and Rebecca, four of their children (Edwin, Anna, Armintha and Fletcher) and a 20 year old hired hand by the name of Samuel Berry. Their near neighbors were Matthias and Caroline West (age 33 and 32 respectively), Mary West (age 65), Elizabeth West (age 63), and Amos and Jane Blaine (both age 26) (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 567, 20 July 1860). The Blaines had a 4 year old daughter named Nelly, who would grow up to marry Rebecca's second cousin, John C. Read4 (Samuel D. Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1). In 1880, John and Rebecca still lived in Blairstown Township. They were listed as dwelling 56, family 60. Matthias and Caroline West were dwelling 55, family 59. Rebecca's first cousin, Hattie Read Cooke4 (Isaac Read, Jr.3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) lived in dwelling 58 (family 61). Elizabeth West (age 83), who was John's mother, lived with John and Rebecca. According to the census she suffered from Rhuematism. Three of John and Rebecca's children still lived at home—Edwin, Fletcher and Eugene. Eighteen year old Alice Hendershot also lived with the family. She was a domestic servant (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 191, page 585B, 4 June 1880). John and Rebecca (Read) West are buried in the St. John's of Hope Methodist Episcopal Church Yard, Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He was still a resident of his parent's household in 1880, although the census indicated that he was "at school." The census listed his brothers Fletcher and Eugene as "students." The difference in the terminology may indicate that Edwin was literally away from home "at school" (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 191, page 585B, 4 June 1880). Edwin married circa 1881 Margaret Matilda "Tillie" Cooke, the daughter of John H. Cooke and Sarah Barrett. Their son Charles was born there in 1898. By 1920, the family had returned to the East Coast. They resided at 34 South 5th Street in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The 1920 census states that Edwin was a doctor in general practice (1920 United States Federal Census, Easton City, Ward 5, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Enumeration District 113, sheet B, 2 January 1920). The family still lived at 34 South 5th in Easton. Four individuals lived in the house: Edwin, Tillie, their daughter-in-law Marian and a live-in maid named Gaynor Hughes. Gaynor was born in Pennsylvania circa 1910. Both of her parents were born in Wales. Edwin was still a physican (1930 United States Federal Census, Easton, Ward 5, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, enumeration district 48-44, sheet 3B, 4 April 1930).
