READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

SARAH READ MANNING2

10. SARAH READ2 (Joseph1) was born 10 April 1779 in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died after 21 April 1850, but before 27 July 1860, probably in Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio (1850 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, District 48, page 432R, 21 April 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 169, 27 July 1860). Sarah married, EPHRAIM MANNING on 6 February 1798, in Sussex County, New Jersey (Sussex County, New Jersey). He was the son of Ephraim Manning and Joanna Brown. Ephraim was born circa 1771, possibly in Knowlton Township and died before 1819 possibly in Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York (Kern 1938; Martin n.d.; Stewart 1998).

CHILDREN OF SARAH READ AND EPHRAIM MANNING

64. (i.) AMOS MANNING3, born circa 1802, in Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 14 August 1862, probably in Washington Township, Hancock County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Stewart 1998; Warren County Surrogate Court Records, hereinafter WCSCR, Minutes). In about 1803, Amos and his parents migrated north to the Fingers Lakes Region of New York. Amos was a baby when this move took place. They settled in Ulysses Township, which was then part of Cayuga County, New York. The Mannings returned to New Jersey after the death of Amos's father, Ephraim, which occured before 1819. They were probably in New Jersey in 1830. By 1840, Amos, his mother and all his brothers and sisters had migrated to Ohio. Amos resided in Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio in that year. The Manning household appears to have consisted of Amos, his brother Isaac R. (who was head of the household), sister Mary and their mother. Amos's sister's family (Anna Manning Price) is listed adjacent to the Manning family on the census (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 32). In 1850 and 1860, Amos appears on the census as a resident of Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Washington Township was adjacent to Cass Township. He lived with his brother Isaac R. (head of houshold in 1850, Amos was head in 1860) and his sister Mary, both of whom had never married. In 1850, his mother also resided in the same household, but she does not appear in the 1860 census (1850 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, District 48, page 432R, 21 April 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 169, 27 July 1860). Amos Manning is named in the settlement of the estate of his first cousin, John Hetty Read, who died in Warren County, New Jersey 14 August 1862. Only John's living first cousins were named in the settlement, so it is assumed that Amos died after John (WCSCR, Minutes). Amos was still single in 1860, when he was about 58 or 59 years old. It is assumed that he never married. Amos does not appear on the 1870 census for Hancock County, Ohio. However, his brother Isaac, with whom he resided from at least 1840 to at least 1860, is listed on the 1870 census. Isaac was living with his sister Anna (Manning) Price in Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 708L, 20 July 1870). Wyandot County is adjacent to Hancock County. As Amos had resided with Isaac as late as 1860, it is possible that he died between 1862 (when his cousin John H. Read's estate was admitted for probate) and 1870 (when the census was enumerated).

65. (ii.) ISAAC R. MANNING3, born circa 1805, in Ulysses, Seneca County, New York and died after 1870 (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 708L, 20 July 1870). Isaac was the first Manning child born in New York. His family moved back to his parents original home in New Jersey after the death of his father, Ephraim Manning. Ephraim died between 1810 and 1819. They were probably in New Jersey in 1830. In March 1838, Isaac witnessed the will of his uncle Issac Read, Sr. of Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (WCSCR, Wills, Book 1 page 368). The Mannings may have lived with Isaac during the 1830s (1830 United States Federal Census Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 381). Between 1838 and 1840, Isaac, his mother and all his brothers and sisters migrated to Ohio. Isaac resided in Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio in that year. The Manning household appears to have consisted of Isaac R. (who was head of the household), his brother Amos, sister Mary and their mother. The family of Isaac sister (Anna Price) is listed adjacent to the Manning family on the census (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 32). In 1850 and 1860, Isaac appears on the census as a resident of Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Washington Township was adjacent to Cass Township. He lived with his brother Amos (head of houshold in 1860, Isaac was head in 1850) and his sister Mary, both of whom had never married. In 1850, his mother also resided in the same household, but she does not appear on the 1860 census (1850 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, District 48, page 432R, 21 April 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 169, 27 July 1860). Isaac R. Manning is named in the settlement of the estate of his first cousin, John Hetty Read, who died in Warren County, New Jersey 14 August 1862. By 1870, Isaac had moved from Washington Township in Hancock County to Eden Township in Wyandot County, Ohio. The 1870 census lists him as a resident of the household of his brother-in-law, George B. Price, the husband of his sister Anna Manning. The census gives Isaac's last name as "Mannin". Isaac was listed as a farm laborer. He owned real estate valued at $3400 and had a personal estate valued at $1000 (amount in census for the later was difficult to decipher). Isaac was 65 years old and single (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 708L, 20 July 1870). It is assumed that he never married.

66. (iii.) MARY M. "POLLY" MANNING3, born circa 1807 in Ulysses, Seneca County, New York and died after 14 August 1862, probably in Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio (Kern 1938; Stewart 1998; WCSCR Minutes). Her family moved back to her parents original home in New Jersey after the death of her father, Ephraim Manning. Ephraim died between 1810 and 1819. The Mannings were probably in New Jersey in 1830. In March 1838, Polly's brother, Isaac witnessed the will of their uncle Issac Read, Sr. of Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (WCSCR, Wills, Book 1 page 368). The Mannings may have lived with Isaac Read, Sr. during the 1830s (1830 United States Federal Census Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 381). Between 1838 and 1840, Polly, her mother and all of her brothers and sisters migrated to Ohio. Polly appears to have resided in the household of her brother Isaac R. Manning in Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio in 1840. The Manning household probably consisted of Polly, her brothers Isaac R. (who was head of the household) and Amos, and their mother. The family of Polly's sister (Anna Price) was listed adjacent to the Manning family on the census (1840 United States Federal Census, Cass Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 32). In 1850 and 1860, Polly appears on the census as a resident of Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio. Washington Township was adjacent to Cass Township. She is called Mary on the 1850 census and Polly on the 1860 census. She lived with her brothers Amos (head of houshold in 1860) and Isaac (head in 1850), both of whom had never married. In 1850, her mother also resided in the same household, but she does not appear on the 1860 census (1850 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, District 48, page 432R, 21 April 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 169, 27 July 1860). "Mary Manning" is named in the settlement of the estate of her first cousin, John Hetty Read, who died in Warren County, New Jersey 14 August 1862. Only John's living first cousins were named in the settlement, so it is assumed that Polly died after John (WCSCR, Minutes). Polly was still single in 1860, when she was about 52 or 53 years old. It is assumed that she never married. She does not appear on the 1870 census for Hancock County, Ohio. However, her brother Isaac, with whom she resided from at least 1840 to at least 1860, is listed on the 1870 census. Isaac was living with his sister Anna (Manning) Price in Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio (1870 United States Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 708L, 20 July 1870). Wyandot County is adjacent to Hancock County. As Polly had resided with Isaac as late as 1860, it is possible that she died between 1862 (when her cousin John H. Read's estate was admitted for probate) and 1870 (when the census was enumerated).

67. (iv.) HANNAH MANNING3, born circa 1809, in Ulysses, Seneca County, New York and died after 1870, probably in Indiana (1850 United States Federal Census, page 490A; 1870 United States Federal Census, page 132R, 21 July 1870; Kern 1938; Stewart 1998). Hannah married by 1834, Jonah Price, the son of Robert Price and Jane Poyer. They were probably married in Warren County, New Jersey as the Price family resided in Warren County. Jonah was born in New Jersey on 25 April 1810 and died between 1860 and 1884 (1850 United States Federal Census page 490A; 1860 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Hancock County, Ohio, page 169, 27 July 1860; Price 2001; Stewart 2002). Hannah's sister Anna married Jonah's brother George in 1832.

68. (v.) ANNA MANNING3, born circa 1811. Kern (1938), Price (2001) and Stewart (1998) give her place of birth as Ulysses, Seneca County, New York. However, the 1850 census places her birth in New Jersey (1850 United Federal Census, Eden Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 455B, 22 October 1850). It is difficult to say where she was born. Her parents settled in New York in about 1803. Her father appears on the 1810 census for Ulysses, Seneca County and died 22 March 1877. She married George Banghart Price on 8 September 1832 in Warren County, New Jersey. The Rev. Jonathan S. Thompson performed the ceremony. In 1833, Thompson married Anna's second cousin, Jane Read4, the widow Drake (Warren County Marriages). George Price was the brother of Jonah Price and the son of Robert Price and Jane Payer. He was born in New Jersey 18 June 1812 (1850 United States Federal Census page 490A; Price 2001).
