EUPHEMIA READ HAGGERTY4

112. EUPHEMIA READ4 (Joseph Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) was born 3 March 1812 and died 5 May 1887 (Kern 1938; Union Brick Cemetery). She married on 25 January 1831, Aaron Haggerty. He was born 6 January 1806 and died 29 March 1877 (Blairstown Press; Kern 1938; Union Brick). Euphemia's mother, Lydia Hart, died on 20 April 1836. Her father, Joseph Read, left New Jersey and settled in Indiana. Eupemia and her sisters Mary Ann and Lydia stayed behind in New Jersey. Euphemia and Mary Ann were both married by 1836. Lydia was just over 10 years of age when her mother died. She appears to have been left behind in New Jersey with her elder sisters. Euphemia's sisters—Elizabeth and Sarah Read— and her brothers—William, Isaac and Nelson Read—appear to have gone to Indiana with their father.

Aaron and Euphemia bought Euphemias' grandfather Read's farm in about 1838 (Kern 1938). The farm was located in that part of Knowlton Township that later became part of Blairstown Township. Isaac Read, Sr.'s farm contained land that had been purchased by his father, Euphemias' great-grandfather, Joseph Read in the late eighteenth century. The farm did not include the original Read farm house, Issac had sold that to his youngest brother Aaron Read (Euphemia's uncle) in the early nineteenth century (Newberry c. 1934).

In 1860, Aaron and Euphemia Haggerty lived in Blairstown Township, post office Blairstown. They owned a farm valued at $12,000 and a personal estate valued at $3,000. Their sons Joseph and William were no longer living in the house (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 568, 20 July 1860). Joseph had left New Jersey and migrated to Minnesota.

Aaron and Eupemia Haggerty still lived on their Balirstown Township farm in 1870. The census gives the value of their real estate as $15,000 and of their personal estate as $5,000. The Haggerty's three youngest surviving daughters still lived at home—Emmeline, Almira and Euphemia. Their sons Joseph and John had both left New Jersey. Joseph was in Minnesota and John was in Wisconsin. Their sons William and Theodore were both methodist episcopal clergymen. William had a church in Oxford Township, but Theodore was in Orange County, New York. Aaron Haggerty had two hited men to help him on the farm. They were 20 year old William Post (a native of New Jersey) and 31 year old James A. Tees (a native of Ireland) (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 32A, 5 July 1870). Aaron was 64 years old in 1870. He died 7 years later, his obituary appeared in the Blairstown Press on 4 April 1877:

HAGGERTY - Near Paulina, on the 29th ult. Aaron Haggerty, aged 71 years and three months.

By 1880, the Haggerty's son Theodore had returned to Warren County. In 1880, Theodore was the pastor of Methodist Episcopal Church of Johnsonburg in Felinghuysen Township, but he and his family lived in Blairstown Township. Euphemia, who was now a widow, lived with Theodore (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 191, page 285C). Aaron and Euphemia are buried in Union Brick Cemetery in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their grave stones were field checked on 27 March 2003. They are inscribed as follows:
