117. NELSON SHACKLETON READ⁴ (Joseph Read³, Isaac Read, Sr.², Joseph Read¹) was born 9 December 1821 in New Jersey and died unknown, probably in Minnesota. His mother, Lydia Hart Read, died on 20 April 1836. His father, Joseph Read, left New Jersey and settled in Henry County, Indiana. Nelson went west with his father. His sisters Euphemia, Mary Ann and Lydia stayed behind in New Jersey. Euphemia and Mary Ann were both married by 1836. Lydia was just over 10 years of age when her mother died. She appears to have been left behind in New Jersey with her elder sisters. Nelson's sisters—Elizabeth and Sarah Read— and his brothers—William, Isaac and Nelson Read—went to to Indiana with Nelson and their father. Nelson's father died on 8 August 1849. Nelson's whereabouts between 1849 and 1870 are unknown. He married by 1866, Delilah (Delia) Grant (Personal Communication, Carol Johnson Hendrickson, 26 January 2002). Deliah was born in Pennsylvania circa 1833. They were probably married in Minnesota. Their first child was born in Minnestoa on 18 February 1867, West Newton, Wabasha County, Minnesota . The 1870 census places them on a farm in the Town of Cairo, Renville County, Minnesota. Their post office was Fort Ridgley. Nelson was a farmer (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Cairo, Renville County, Minnesota, page 109A, 14 July 1870). by 1880, Nelson lived in Leroy Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. His 11 year old son Nelson lived with him but, Deliah and Josephine were not residents of the household (1880 United States Federal Census, Leroy Township, Blue Earth County, Wisconsin, page 264B).

She appears on the 1870 census as a 3 year old child named "Josey" living with her parents in Renville County, Minnesota (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Cairo, Renville County, Minnesota, page 109A, 14 July 1870). Josie married Osgood Johnson, the son of David Johnson and Mary Jane Goodwin. They farmed in Eagle Lake, Blue Earth County, Minnesota (Minnesota Historical Society CertID# 1947-MN-000992 (Death Certificate under Josie Johnson); Personal Communication, Carol Johnson Hendrickson, 26 January 2002). 1091. (i.) HESTER LAPERAL JOHNSON⁶, born 12 November 1883, Lake Crystal, Blue Earth County, Minnesota and died 12 November 1974, St. James Watonwan County, Minnesota. She is buried in Madelia, Watonwan County, Minnesota. According to the Social Security Death Index, her SSI number was issued in Minnesota. The last payment of benefits was made to an address in St. James, Wantonwan County, Minnesota. Hester married on 4 September 1901, Hercules George Dodge, the son of George Washington Dodge and Pemilla Alzira Bradley. Hercules Dodge was born 31 March 1883, Antrim Township, Watonwan County, Minnesota and died 23 December 1967, Sacramento, California. He is buried in Arlington Cemetery, Sacramento, California. According to the Social Security Death Index, his SSI number was issued in Minnesota. The last benefit payment was made in Sacramento, California (Carol Johnson Hendrickson, 27 January 2002; Dodge n.d.; Social Security Death Index). In 1920, Hester and Hercules Dodge resided at 729 Sixth St. in Fairmont City, Minnesota. Hercules was not employed, no occupation is listed for him in the census. Four of the Dodge children lived in the household: Blanche, George, Noel and Bradley. Blanche and George were in school. According to the census, Hester's father was from Canada, while her mother was born in Minnesota. Hercules's parents were from in New Hampshire (father) and Minnesota (mother). 1413. (iii.) GEORGE WASHINGTON DODGE⁷, born 20 January 1913, Truman Village, Wantonwan County, Minnesota and died 11 December 1964, Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. He is buried in St. James, Watonwan County, Minnesota. George married on 27 March 1935, Amelia Helen Christine Marth, the daughter of Frank F. Marth and Bertha J. Kemke. Amelia was born 5 August 1906 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma and died 7 November 1979, St. James, Wantonwan County, Minnesota. According to the Social Security Death Index her last known residence was St. James. Both she and George were issued SSI numbers in Minnesota (Dodge n.d.; Social Security Death index). He is buried in Hope Cemetery, St. James, Watonwan County, Minnesota. According to the Social Security Death Index, the last payment of benefits was made to an address in St. James. He appeared on the 1870 census as a 2 year old child living with her parents in Renville County, Minnesota (1870 United States Federal Census, Town of Cairo, Renville County, Minnesota, page 109A, 14 July 1870). He married circa 1890, in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Luesitta Fiefield, daughter of Absolum Fiefield and Nancy Johnson (Hendrickson 2002; Kramdradt n.d.). She was known as "Lusette." She was born 1873, LeRay Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, and died 26 June 1943 in Blue Earth County, Minnesota (CertID# 1943-MN-000988). In 1907, when her mother Nancy Fifield Cole Singleton Joshlyn Baker died (Nancy was married five times), Lusette and Nelson lived in Madison Lake, Minnesota (Kramdradt n.d.). Lusette's uncle, Osgood Johnson married Nelson's sister, Josie Read (Hendrickson 2002). By 1920, Nelson and Lusette resided in Eagle Lake Village, LaRay Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. The 1920 census lists Nelson as a farmer. It states that his father was born in New York (not New Jersey) and that his mother was born in Pennsylvania. Lusette's father was born in Vermont and her mother in Canada. During the census year four of their nine children resided with them: 16 year old Ernest who was a laborer; 14 year old Florence, who was at home; and 12 year old Gladys and 10 year old Lottie, who were in school. She married Milton G. Tornell. He was born circa 1881 in Minnesota. In 1920, Elsie and Milton lived in Hadley, Minnesota. Milton was a telegraph operator for the railroad. Although Milton was born in Minnesota, his parents were natives of Sweden. The Tornells had two daughters, who were both pre-schoolers. They owned their home, but it was mortgaged (1920 United States Federal Census, Village of Hadley, Leeds Township, Murray County, Minnesota, Enumeration District 148, sheet 28B, 19 January 1920). By 1943 the Tornells lived in Jordan, Minnesota (Kramdradt n.d.) According to the Social Security Death Index, death benefits for Elsie Tornell were paid to addresses in Minneapolis, Saint Anthony and Saint Anthony Village; all in Hennepin County, Minnesota. According to the Social Security Death Index, Ernest's last known residence was Eagle Lake, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. He was living in Eagle Lake in 1943 when his mother died. Ernest married Margaret Last Name Unknown (Carol Johnson Hendrickson, 27 January 2002; Kramdradt n.d.; Social Security Death Index).

FLORENCE READ⁶, born 28 March 1905 in Minnesota (1920 United States Federal Census, Eagle Lake Village, LaRay Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Enumeration District 7, sheet 11A, 8 January 1920) and died 28 June 1989. She married George Groll, he was born 4 March 1897 and died September 1982. According to the Social Security Death Index, his last known residence was Mapleton, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. The Grools lived in Mapleton in 1943, when Florence's mother died (Carol Johnson Hendrickson, 27 January 2002; Kramdradt n.d.; Social Security Death Index).

GLADYS READ⁶, born 1905 (1920 United States Federal Census, Eagle Lake Village, LaRay Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, Enumeration District 7, sheet 11A, 8 January 1920) and died unknown. She married Lawrence Karpen. He was born 10 August 1907 and died 24 September 1997. According to Hendrickson, they resided in Missouri (Carol Johnson Hendrickson, 27 January 2002). However in 1943, at the time of the death of Glady's mother, the Karpens lived in El Cerrito, California (Kramdradt n.d.). The Social Security Death Index gives Lawrence's death residence as Clayton, Contra Costa County, California. His social security number was issued in Minnesota.
