PHEBE ANN LUSE4

124. PHEBE ANN LUSE4 (Elizabeth Read,3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 12 February 1817 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 23 March 1877 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Armstrong 1979:348-350; Swayze Cemetery). Eleven days after Phebe was born, there was a heavy snow fall in Sussex County. An entry in the Bible of Thomas Hankinson describes the event: "February 23 1817 began to Cloud at Night began to Snow Continued all the Next day 24th the Snow Drifted Very Much - Ezekiel Cole was buried Stormed so much did not go to See him buried - Snow fell perhaps one foot deep" (Hankinson 1939:48).

Phebe married on 19 January 1837, Israel Swayze Gibbs (Warren County Marriages), the son of James Gibbs and Margaret Swayze. He was born 6 March 1810 and died 25 December 1882 (Armstrong 1979:349-350, 391: Swayze Cemetery). Israel Gibb's nephew, William Luse, Jr. (who was also Phebe's first cousin), married Phebe's second cousin, (229) Hulda Read4 (Isaac, III3, John2, Joseph1). William Luse's mother, Catherine Gibbs, was Israel's sister. William's father, William Luse, Sr., was Phebe's uncle, the brother of her father, Aaron Luse. In summary, William Luse, Jr. was, by blood, Phebe Luse Gibbs's first cousin. By marriages, he became her nephew and her second cousin.

Israel and Phebe Gibbs are listed in the 1850 United States Federal Census as residents of Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Israel is listed as a farmer. However, no real estate value is given (1850 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 438A). The 1860 census again lists them as residents of Hope Township. Their farm was valued at $15,000 and they owned a personal estate worth $1,100. Their near neighbors were Anthony and Sarah (Read) Osmun3. The Gibbs lived in dwelling 9 and were the ninth family visited by the census taker on 26 June 1860. The Osmuns lived in dwelling 11 and were the eleventh family visited. Sarah was Phebe's first cousin, once removed. Sarah's father was David Read2, a younger brother of Phebe's grandfather, Isaac Read, Sr.2. The Gibbs family in 1860 consisted of Israel and Phebe, six children (Elizabeth, Marshall, Margaret, Rachel, Aaron and Israel, Jr.) and a 22 year old male named Job Decker. Decker may have been hired help on the Gibbs farm (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 2).

By 1870, only three of Phebe and Israel's children still lived at home: Phebe (age 23), Aaron (age 17), and Israel, Jr. (age 12). Aaron and Israel worked as farm laborers. None of the Gibbs children were in school Israel Sr.'s occupation was given as farmer. The Gibbs family owned real estate valued at $16,000, and had a personal estate valued at $2,250. Daughter Phebe's future husband, Alvin Van Horn lived nearby on his parent's farm. The Gibbs family was household number 133 and the Van Horns were number 134 (1870 Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 177A, 4 August 1870).

Phebe's death in 1877, at the age of 60, was unexpected; as can be seen from the news paper announcement of her death:

GIBBS - at Hope, suddenly on the 23d inst., Mrs. Israel Gibbs (Blairstown Press, Wednesday, 28 March 1877; Vol. I, No. 8).

Israel lived for almost another 6 years after his wife Phebe's death in 1877. In 1880, he resided with his daughter Phebe Gibbs Van Horn and her husband in Alvin in Hope Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 421D). He died in December 1882. Phebe and Israel Gibbs are buried in Swayze Cemetery, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their stones were field checked 3 July 1999 and are inscribed:

They had at least 18 grandchildren who were born between 1871 and 1899 and 9 great-grandchildren who were born between 1903 and 1931. I have also identified 17 second great-grandchildren and 4 third great grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 58.
