READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
131. SOREN WADE READ4 (Isaac Read, Jr.3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 1844 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1914 in Warren County, New Jersey. In 1880, Soren was the head of the Read Household in Hope Township. Both of his parents were deceased. The household included Soren, his brother Winfield and his sisters Clarissa and Abby. Soren (or Wade by the census) was a farmer (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 421C). Soren married circa 1887, Sarah D. Cyphers, the daughter of James C. and Rachael Cyphers. Sarah was born in 1855 and died in 1920. In 1870, The Cypers family lived on a farm in Hope Township. sarah was the eldest of the six children living in the household. These children included Sarah (age 14), Ellen (age 12), Redman (age 11), Clark (age 9), Pamelia (age 7) and Ezra (age 4) (1870 United States Federal Census, page 177B, 4 August 1870). Soren is listed on the 1900 United States Federal Census as a resident of Hope. He gave his age as 50 and his birth date as May 1850 (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 189, sheet 3B, 6 June 1900). Yet his tombstone in St. Johns's Church Yard gives his dates as 1844 through 1914. Sarah's birthdate in the 1900 census is given as September 1856, her age as 43. Her tombstone gives her dates as 1855 through 1920. The confusion with the ages continues in other censii. In 1880, Soren gave his age as 34 (he was actually 36). On the 1910 census his age is given as 58 (he was actually 56). Sarah gave her age as 51 in 1910 (she was actually 55). In 1910, Soren and Sarah lived in Hope Township on the Mount Hermon Road. They were probably living in the house that Soren's father Isaac purchased in 1816 (see photograph of house on Isaac Read Jr's page). One of their children, Ella Read, was still living at home. According to the census, Soren and Sarah had been married for 23 years and were the parents of 4 chilren, 3 of whom were living in 1910. Soren was a farmer. He owned the farm free and clear of any mortgages or liens. The Reads lived in dwelling 187 and were family 204. Next to the Reads were Ezra W. and Margaret M. Cyphers. Ezra was Sarah's youngest brother. They lived in dwelling 186 and were family 203 (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12A; 1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 199, page 10 of Hope Township, page 417 left of the census). Ezra still lived there in 1930. Soren and Sarah are buried in St. John's of Hope Methodist Episcopal Church Yard, Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

CHILDREN OF SOREN WADE READ AND SARAH CYPHERS:
478. (i.) JAMES W. READE5, was born 16 August 1886 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died October 1970 in New Jersey (Ruether, n.d.; Social Security Death Index). He was probably named after his maternal grandfather James C. Cyphers. The 1900 census gives his birth date as August 1887. In 1900, James lived with his parents in Hope Township and attended school. (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 189, sheet 3B, 6 June 1900). James married circa 1905, Bertha S. (Last Name Unknown), she was born in 1881 and died 1968 (Reuther n.d.). James changed the spelling of his last name from R-E-A-D to R-E-A-D-E. In 1920, James and Bertha Read owned a horse farm on the Ebenezer Road in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheet 7B). They were still living on Ebenezer Road in 1930, but they had switched to dairy farming. They owned a radio. Only one of their children was at home in 1930, their daughter Evelyn (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-6, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 17 April 1930). James and Bertha are buried in Washington Memorial Cemetery, Washington, Warren County, New Jersey. According to the Social Security Death Index, James's last known residence was Pompton Lakes, Passaic County, New Jersey. Children of James and Bertha Read:
994. (ii.) Dr. EVELYN M. READE6, was born 31 July 1910 and died 6 September 1993 (Social Security Death Index). In 1920, Evelyn was 9 years old and lived at home with her parents and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheet 7B). Evelyn was still living at home with her parents in 1930. She was 19 years old and was still in school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-6, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 2B, 17 April 1930). It is probable that she was attending college. The Social Security Death Index gives her last residence as Paulsboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey. Evelyn appears to have remained single throughout her long life. She is buried in Washington Memorial Cemetery, Washington, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.).
479. (ii.) ELLA C. READ5, was born September1889, probably in Warren County, New Jersey and died in 1917. She was probably named after her mother's sister, Ella Cyphers (Ella Cyphers was born circa 1857; 1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 199, page 10 of Hope Township, page 417 left of the census). Ella lived at home with her parents in 1900 and attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 189, sheet 3B, 6 June 1900). She was still single and living at home in 1910. She was also employed as a school teacher (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12A). Ella married after 1910, G.H. Cooley. She is buried in the Methodist Episcopal Church St. John's of Hope Church Yard, Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (now St. John's United Methodist Church).
480. (iii.) WINFIELD E. READ5, was born 19 September 1892, probably in Warren County, New Jersey and died 23 October 1974. Winfield lived at home with his parents in 1900 and attended school (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 189, sheet 3B, 6 June 1900). In about 1919, Winfield married his third cousin (3626) Beatrice J. Allen5 (Emmaretta Osmun4, Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1). She was the daughter of William Preston Allen and Emmaretta Osmun. Beatrice was born 14 April 1896 and died 10 May 1978. In 1910, Beatrice was 14 years old and livedwith her brother Charles O. Allen and his wife Bertha E. Allen. The Allens had four children: James (age 9), Frank (age 7), Walter (age 5) and Earl (age 3). Bertha was expecting her fifth child, a daughter Helen, who was born sometime in 1910. The Allens lived in Hainesburg in Knowlton Township, Warren County on the road leading toward Delaware. Charles Allen was a farmer (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 27 April 1910). In 1930, Winfield and Beatrice lived on the road between Hope and Mt Hermon. They owned their home. Winfield worked as a farm laborer, but his property was not a working farm. It is possible that he worked for his uncle, Ezra Cyphers, whose property was next door. Ezra did own a farm and was employed as a farmer. In 1930, Ezra was 58 and was married to his second wife, Grace. They had married in about 1918 when Ezra was 46 and Grace was 26 (1930 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-11, sheet 5B, 10 April 1930). The Social Security Death Index gives Winfield's residence at death as Hope, New Jersey. The index gives Beatrice's last residence as Belvidere, New Jersey. They are buried in the St. John's of Hope Methodist Episcopal Church Yard, Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The 1900 United States Census gives Winfield's birth date as October 1892, his tombstone gives the September date. Children of Winfield and Beatrice Read:
2076. (ii.) HAROLD D. READ6, was born circa 1924 in New Jersey. In 1930, he lived with his parents and attended school (1930 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-11, sheet 5B, 10 April 1930).

(i.) DAUGHTER READ7, (Blairstown Press, 7 December 1967).
996. (v.) DORTHEA "DOTTIE" READ6, was born unknown and and died unknown. She married Harry Mason. Child of Dorothea and Harry Mason:
997. (iv.) CHILD READ5, was born after 1900 and died before 1910. According to the 1900 census, Sarah was the mother of a total of three children—James, Ella and Winfield. The 1910 indicates that she was the mother of four children, three of whom were living in 1910. Based on the census data, it is assumed the fourth child was born after the 1900 census and that he or she died before the 1910 census (1900 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 189, sheet 3B, 6 June 1900; 1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 131, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12A).
