HARRIET A. "HATTIE" READ COOK4

134. HARRIET A. "HATTIE" READ4 (Isaac Read, Jr.3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 15 May 1853 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509811, the batch indicates that Harriet was a male child, but the census data dictates otherwise) and died 2 February 1909 (Burd 1916). She was probably named after her aunt (and mother's younger sister) Harriet Buckley. She resided with her parents and siblings in 1870 on the family farm in Hope Township (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 185A, 18 August 1870). Hattie married in 1871, Charles S. Cook (Warren County Marriages Index, Vol 2, Letter C). In 1880, the Cooks lived in Blairstown Township, Warren County. Charles was a farm hand. The couple had recently had a daughter, Clara W. Cook, who was 5 months old. The Cooks were surrounded by Hattie's extended family. Charles and Hattie lived in dwelling 58 and were family 61. Hattie's first cousin (102) Rebecca Read West4 lived in dwelling 56 (family 60). Her first cousin (112) Euphemia Haggerty4 lived with her son the Rev. Theodore Haggerty in dwelling 61 (families 64 and 65) (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairtown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 191, page 285B and 285C, 3 June 1880). In 1900, the family still lived in Blairstown Township. Charles was a clerk working in the lumber and coal industry. Hattie's sister Clarissa also lived with the family. The census gives Hattie's date of birth as May 1859, which is 6 years less than other census ages. According to the census Charles and Hattie had been married 24 years and were the parents of four children. Three of these children were still living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeraton district 182, sheet 4B, 9 June 1900). Hattie was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown, as was her sister Clarissa Read (Burd 1916). Hattie died 2 February 1909. Her husband Charles appears on the 1910 census as a widower living in the village of Blairtsown. He was employed as a salesman in a lumberyard. He rented the house in which he and his two sons lived. Hattie's sister Clarissa still lived with the family (1910 United States Federal Census, Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 123, sheet 2B, 16 April 1910).
