READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

SARAH ANN RAUB NEWTON4

135. SARAH ANN RAUB NEWTON4 (Mary Raub3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) was born 20 June 1816, probably in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died after 1880, probably in Michigan. She married by 1841, in New Jesey, John Newton (Kern 1938). He probably died before 1850 as he does not appear on the 1850 census in the same household as Sally. In 1850, Sally lived with her brother Isaac in Concord Township, Jackson County, Michigan. The household consisted of Isaac Raub as the head-of-household, his four children (Hannah, John, Nelson Michael and Jarius) and Sally. Isaac owned the farm that the family lived on. The value for the real estate ($1,600) is given with his information in the census, not with Sally's data (1850 United States Federal Census, Concord Township, Jackson County, Michigan). By 1870, Sally Newton had moved to Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. She owned property valued at $4170 and a personal estate valued at $1245. Sally's nephew, Jarius Raub (son of her brother Isaac Raub), lived with her. He worked as a farm laborer (1870 United States Federal Census, Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, page 365R). Jarius still resided with his Aunt Sally in 1880. Sally still resided in Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan and was the head-of-household. Her nephew Jairus Raub (son of her brother Isaac) lived with her, along with his wife Mary Louisa (Church) Raub and their son Vaughan Raub. According to the census, "Lou" Raub was Sally's daughter and Vaughan Raub was her grandson (1880 United States Federal Census, Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, page 26C). Whether Sally Raub married again after John Newton's death is unknown. However, if Mary Louisa Church was her daughter, it is clear that she must have married again, and then returned to using the surname Newton by 1880.
