ROBERTA McKAY COURSEN HAMMERS SMITH6

1631. ROBERTA McKAY COURSEN6, (Melville Ewing Coursen5, Aaron Reed Coursen4, Sarah Ann Read/Reed3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 4 January 1904 on Wallace Ave. in Linesville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 27 May 1996 in Austin, Williamson County, Texas (Crawford County Births, Vol 2, 1893-1902, page 31, line 32; Social Security Death Index). Roberta's father died on 9 December 1907. Her mother was probably dead by 1910, as she does not appear on the 1910 Federal Census, In addition, Roberta's older sister Agnes had died in 1909 at the age of 20. After her parents died, Roberta, was sent to live with their mother's sister Kate McKay Dickey. Her only surviving sibling, Marie Coursen, was sent to live with her mother's sister Nell McKay Stewart (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 26, North Shenago Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6B, 30 April 1910).

In 1910, Roberta lived in Crawford County, Pennsylvania with her Uncle Orlando C. Dickey (age 48) and Aunt Kate McKay Dickey (age 45). Her maternal grandfather, Robert S. McKay (age 85), also lived in the household. The Dickeys did not have any other children (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 17, Linesville, Pine Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, sheet 1B, 15 April 1910). Orlando Dickey died in 1916 and was buried in Linesville Cemetery, which is on Wallace Street in the town of Linesville. Robert McKay may have died by 1920, as he was not a resident of Kate Dickey's household in 1920. Roberta still lived with her Aunt Kate in 1920. Kate Dickey was a widow in 1920. Neither woman worked. They lived on Penn Street in Linesville. Roberta attended school in Linesville (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 23, Linesville Borough, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, sheet 6A, 12 January 1920). By 1930, Roberta and her aunt Kate had moved south from Crawford County to Oil City, Venago County, Pennsylvania. Roberta was 26 years old and was employed as a school teacher in a grade school. The census gives her surname as "Coursin" and states that she was Kate's daughter. For all practice purposes, Roberta was Kate's daughter. Her parents were both dead by the time she was 5 years old and she had been raised by her Uncle Orlando and Aunt Kate Dickey. Kate Dickey rented a home in Oil City for $30 per month. She and Roberta owned a radio. Their home was at 12 Strout Street in Oil City (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 61-29, Ward 7, Oil City, Venago County, Pennsylvania, sheet 13B, 14 April 1930).

Roberta married on 14 June 1937, George McKinley Hammers (Murcko 1996-1998). He was born 20 September 1896 in Pennsylvania and died June 1963 (Social Security Death Index). He was probably the George M. Hammers who appears on the 1930 census as a resident of the household of his sister Agnes E. Hall and her husband William L. Hall. The Halls lived in Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. William Hall owned an electric store. George Hammers was employed as a commission salesman for a sewing machine company. In 1930, he was 33 years old. He was a native of Pennsylvania, although his father was originally from Maryland. George Hammers was divorced in 1930. He had married at the age of 17 (about 1913), the date of his divorce is unknown. Richard Huselton was a lodger in the Hall household. He was a 21 year old commission salesman in general sales (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 11-50, 1st Ward, Johnstown City, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5B, 9 April 1930).

The Hammers moved to Texas in the 1950s or 1960s. Both George and Roberta's social security numbers were issued in Pennsylvania before 1951. George died in Texas in 1963. Roberta married five years later on 8 July 1968. Her second husband was Gerald Fonner Smith. He was born 3 August 1905 and died September 1973. They were married in Bexar County, Texas. It is not known if Gerald Smith was related to the same Fonner family as that of Roberta's grandmother, Sarah Fonner Coursen. Gerald and Roberta lived in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas at the time of his death in 1973. Gerald's social security number was issued in Texas before 1951. Roberta moved to Austin, Williamson County, Texas by 1996. She resided there when she died in 1996 (Social Security Death Index).

Roberta McKay Coursen and George McKinley Hammers had two children I have identified 4 grandchildren and 1 great-granchild. Total identified descendants equals 7.
