READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

ISAAC READ RAUB4

136. ISAAC READ RAUB4 (Mary Raub3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1) was born 19 August 1818, probably in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died after 1880, probably in Michigan. He was probably named after his grandfather, Isaac Read, Sr. Isaac married first, on 7 April 1841 in Warren County, New Jersey, Margaret Nyce, the daughter of John P. Nyce and Mary Brugler. The wedding was performed by the Rev. Barrass, a Baptist minister (Reuther n.d.). The couple's first three children, Hannah, John and Nelson, were born in New Jersey. Sometime between 1845 and 1847, the family migrated to Michigan. Their fourth child, Jairus was born there in 1847. Margaret died in Michigan between 1847 and 1850. She does not appear on the 1850 census as a resident of Isaac's household. Isaac resided in Concord Township, Jackson County, Michigan in 1850. He shared a home with his his four children and his sister (135) Sally Raub Newton4. The census lists Isaac and Margaret's children with the last name of Newton. The list is as follows (1850 United States Federal Census, Concord Township, Jackson County, Michigan, page 520, 10 August 1850):

It is obvious that the "Newton" children were actually Isaac and Margaret (Nyce) Raub's children. Their children, that I have good solid birth dates for, were John, born 1843; Nelson M., born 1845; and Jarius born 1847. The three boys in the census were born in the same years: John in 1843; Michael in 1845 (I'm assuming that he was Nelson Michael) and Jarius in 1847. The surname appears to have been incorrectly entered by the census taker.

Between 1850 and 1856, Isaac married his second wife, Susan (Last Name Unknown), in Michigan. She was born in Pennsylvania (1880 United States Federal Census, Albion Township, Calhoun county, Michigan, page 21A) and died between 1858 and 1870. She does not appear as a resident of the Raub household in 1870. Isaac and Susan lived at least part of their married life in Calhoun County, Michigan. Their two youngest sons, Marcus and Theodore, were born there. Their sons Edward and Jesse were born in Michigan, but it is not known whether they were born in Jackson or Calhoun County.

In 1870, Isaac Raub lived with five of his seven sons in Albion Township. Isaac was not married at the time that the census was taken. The five sons were Nelson, Edward, Jesse, Marcus and Theodore. Nelson had married in 1869 and his wife Eliza (Haney) Raub was also a reisdent of the household. The couple did not have any children in 1870. Isaac owned real estate valued at $10,000. His personal estate was valued at $2,125. He was a farmer and his son Nelson was a farm laborer on the farm. Isaac's son Jarius, lived with Isaac's sister Sally Newton in Albion Township. Sally was a widow and Jarius appears to have been working her farm (1870 United States Federal Census, Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, pages 358R, 365R). The residence (in 1870) of his eldest son, John B. Raub, is not currently known. The Raub household in 1870 consisted of:

On 1 March 1876, Isaac married as his third wife, Barbara Carty. They were married in Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. Barbara was born in Ireland in circa 1835. The 1880 United States Census places Isaac and Barbara in Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan. Isaac was a farmer. The Raub houshold included Isaac's son Marcus and 19 year old Clark Titman. Clark was born in Pennsylvania circa 1861. Both of his parents were also born in Pennsylvania, but it is probable that they were related to the Titman Family of Warren County, New Jersey. Clark was employed as a farm hand on the Raub farm (1880 United States Federal Census, Albion Township, Calhoun County, Michigan, page 21A). The composition of the Raub household in 1880 was a follows:
