READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

SARAH READ MIDDLESWORTH3

16. SARAH READ3 (Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1) was born 1 May 1788 in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey; died 17 January 1859 in Michigan, age 70 years, 9 months, and 9 days (Byron Cemetery; Kern 1938; Ward 1998). She married JOHN MIDDLESWORTH, Sr., on 19 October 1805 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Sussex County Marriages). He was born 22 April 1782 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 22 February 1847 in Michigan, age 64 years and 10 months (Byron Cemetery; Ward 1998). In 1826, Sarah and John were founding members of the Christian Church in Johnsonburg, Hardwick (now Frelinghuysen) Township, New Jersey (Snell 1881). The 1830 United States Federal Census places them in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Page 446). The census indicates that they had 8 children, 7 boys and one girl. The ages ranged from under 5 years of age to 20. Sarah and John settled in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan between 1838 and 1840. Sarah's father, Isaac Read, Sr. died in Knowlton Township, Warren County on 1 March 1838. John Middlesworth was named in Isaac's will as an executor of the estate. The Middlesworth's were still in New Jersey in March 1838, as John signed documents relating to the probate of Isaac's estate during that month. It is probable that the family left New Jersey for Michigan in 1838. Twin grandsons (Levi and George, the sons of Abraham and Mary Middlesworth) were born in Michigan on 13 August 1838. Part of the family was definitely in Michigan by 1839, as two granchildren were born there in that year: Nancy Cummins, daughter of William and Mary (Middlesworth) Cummins and Jacob Middlesworth, son of Isaac and Sarah Ann (Snook) Middlesworth. John Middlesworth is listed as head-of-household in Argentine Township, Genesse County, Michigan in 1840 (page 26). The household consisted of John and Sarah and three of their sons, who were between the ages of 5 and 20. These boys were James, Joseph and one other son whose name is not known. Sarah and John are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.

Sarah Read and John Middlesworth had 10 children born between 1806 and circa 1830. They had at least 47 grandchildren who were born between 1827 and 1874. I have identified 14 great-grandchildren born between 1849 and 1881. Total identified descendants equals 70.

773. (vi.) SON MIDDLESWORTH4, was born between 1820 and 1825 in Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. He appears on the 1830 United States Federal Census as a member of John Middlesworth's household in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey (page 446). His age is given as 5 to 10 years. He does not appear on the 1840 United States Federal census as a member of John Middleworth's household (Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 446). In 1840, he would have been between 15 and 20 years of age. It is possible that he was either married by 1840, or that he had died.

774. (vii.) DAUGHTER MIDDLESWORTH4, was born between 1820 and 1825 in Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. She appears on the 1830 United States Federal Census as a member of John Middlesworth's household in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey (page 446). Her age is given as 5 to 10 years. She does not appear on the 1840 United States Federal census as a member of John Middleworth's household (Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 446). In 1840, she would have been between 15 and 20 years of age. It is possible that she was either married by 1840, or that she had died.

109. (viii.) JOHN MIDDLESWORTH, Jr.4, was born 31 August 1824 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 13 January 1825, age 4 months, 13 days in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey. 775. (x.) SON MIDDLESWORTH4, was born circa 1830 in Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. He appears on the 1830 United States Federal Census as member of John Middlesworth's household in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey (page 446). His age is given as under five years of age. On the 1840 United States Federal Census, a child between the ages of 5 to 10 years of age is listed as a member of John Middlesworth's household in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan (page 26). If this child was born in 1830, he would have been an infant when the census was taken in 1830 and around 10 years of age in 1840. This individual may be Ira Middlesworth. Ira Middlesworth was born circa 1830 in New Jersey. In 1850, he was a farmer in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan (United States Federal Census, page 264). Ira was married to a woman named Margaret. They had at least two children, Edward (born circa 1849) and Floyd (born circa 1857). By 1860, Ira was dead. Margaret appears as the head-of-household on the 1860 United States Federal Census for Argentine Township, Genesse County, Michigan (page 370).

MARY (or MARIA) R. MIDDLESWORTH4

104. MARY (or MARIA) R. MIDDLESWORTH4 (Sarah Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 16 February 1806 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 4 December 1890 in Michigan, age 83 years, 10 months and 14 days. The cemetery records for Byron Cemetery in Byron, Michigan give her name as Mary Mariah Cummins. She married William Cummins, on 21 January 1828 in New Jersey. The wedding was performed by Elder Jonathan S. Thompson, the pastor of the Christian Church in Johnsonburg Hardwick (now Frelinghuysen) Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Mary's parents and grandparents, Isaac and Mary (Shckleton) Read were original members of the congregation; as was William's father, Matthias Cummins. Elder Thompson would marry Jane Read, the widow Drake in March 1833. Jane was Mary's first cousin once removed, she was the duaghter of Mary's great uncle Samuel Read. Mary's husband, William Cummins was born 30 June 1800 (or 10 July 1800) and died 10 October 1877 in Michigan, age 77 years, 3 months and 10 days. He was the son of Matthias Cummins and Hannah Hunter. The 1830 United States Federal Census places the William and Mary Cummins in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey (page 399). There were three individuals in the household, William, Mary and a male child under the age of 5. The latter was probably their son Matthias, who was born January 1829 in Warren County. William and Mary's three oldest children (Matthias, Rebecca and Hannah) were all born in New Jersey between 1829 and 1837. Their fourth child, Nancy, was born in Michigan in 1839. This places their move from New Jersey to Michigan between the years 1837 and 1839. It is probable that the Middlesworth and Cummins families left for Michigan after the death of Mary's grandfather, Isaac Read, Sr. in March 1838. William and Mary Cummins are buried in Byron Cemetery, block 3, lot 2, graves 8 and 10, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.

CHILDREN OF MARY MARIA MIDDLEWORTH AND WILLIAM CUMMINS:

392. (i.) MATTHIAS CUMMINS5, was born 18 January 1827, in the vicinity of Vienna, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 4 November 1900 in Argentine Township, Genesse County, Michigan. He appears as a member of his parents household on the 1830 United States Federal Census for Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey (page 399). As young child of 9 or 10, he traveled west with his extended family to Michigan. His parents, grandparents and many of his Middlesworth uncles settled in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan. In 1840, the Cummins family was living on a farm in Argentine Township. Matthias was the only son in a family of five children (1840 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 26). The Cummins farm was next door to Matthias's grandparents, John and Sarah Middlesworth. Matthias married another Warren County, New Jersey native in Michigan by 1848. Her name was Sarah Ann Middlesworth. Sarah was probably a cousin of some sort, but her relationship to Matthias is currently unknown. She was born 25 September 1830 in Warren County and died 19 November 1895 in Argentine Township, Genesse County, Michigan. By 1850 Matthias owned $500 worth of real estate in Argentine Township. He and Sarah had one child, their daughter Mary, who was a year old (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 264). Their neighbors on either side were Matthias's uncle James Middlesworth and his father William Cummins. By 1860, Matthias's land holdings had deceased in value to $400. He also owned a personal estate valued at $350 (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375). According to the 1860 census, he and Sarah had 3 children: Mary, Sarah and Jay. Their next-door-neighbors were Stephen and Elizabeth Jennings. Their son William Thomas Jennings was married to Matthias's first cousin Savilla Jane Middlesworth. Just past the Jennings farm were the farms of Matthias's first cousin John Middlesworth and of his Uncle Isaac R. Middlesworth. Matthias and Sarah are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. They are in block 3, lot 1, graves 6 (Matthias) and 8 (Sarah). Children of Matthias Cummins and Sarah Ann Middlesworth:

Rebecca was one of four daughters in a family of five children (1840 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 26). The Cummins farm was next door to that of her grandparents, John and Sarah Middlesworth. She is not living in her parents household in 1850 (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 264). By that time she was 15 and it is possible that she was hiring out as domestic help on the various farms in the area. In this way she could make money to buy the kitchen and other items she would need when she married. Rebecca married in about 1857, Reuben Bostwick (LDS, AFN:1QX7-RZC)

ISAAC R. MIDDLESWORTH, Sr.4

105. ISAAC R. MIDDLESWORTH, Sr.4 (Sarah Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 1809 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 22 January 1902 in Michigan. He married first, in New Jersey, Sarah Ann Snook, the daughter of William C. Snook and Mary Cummins. Sarah was born 24 December 1812 in New Jersey and died 4 January 1858 in Michigan, age 45 years and 11 days. Isaac married second, between 1858 and 1863 in Michigan, Laura Spence. She was born in 1834 and died in 1900 in Michigan. All three are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Isaac and Sarah's six oldest children (William, Mary, John, Sarah, Savilla and Jane) were all born in New Jersey between 1832 and 1837. Their seventh child, Jacob, was born in Michigan in 1839. This places their move from New Jersey to Michigan between the years 1837 and 1839. It is probable that the family left with Isaac's parents and other siblings after the death of his grandfather, Isaac Read, Sr. in March 1838. An Isaac Middlesworth is listed on the 1870 United States Federal Census Index in Argentine Township, Genessee County, Michigan (1870:396).

He was still attending school at that time (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850). John married Elvira H. Jennings, daughter of Stephen Jennings and Elizabeth Harris. Her name is given as Almira on the 1860 census. She was born 5 January 1836 in New York and died 13 January 1908, age 72 years, 8 days in Michigan. The 1860 census places John and Alvira in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan. They owned a farm valued at $1,600 and had a personal estate valued at $525. They had one living child, their son George. The John Middlesworth family lived between Elvira's father, Stephen Jenning (dwelling number 2932) and John's father, Isaac Middlesworth (dwelling number 2934). Elvira's brother, William Jennings was married to John's sister Savilla Middlesworth. William and Savilla lived with Stephen Jennings in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). John and Elvira are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Children of John and Elvira Middlesworth:

959. (iv.) JOHN MIDDLESWORTH6, was born 1871 in Michigan and died unknown (Ward).

401. (iv.) SARAH MIDDLESWORTH5, was born circa 1836 in New Jersey and died unknown. She appears on the 1850 United States Census as Sarah Middlesworth, age 14. She attended school that year (page 263). The 1840 census (page 26) lists two females under the age of 5 in the household of Isaac and Sarah Middlesworth, these two girls would be Sarah age 4 and Savilla Jane age 3. Both Sarah and Jane appear on the 1850 census, but there is no Savilla (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850). She was not living in her widower father's household in 1860 when the census was taken (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860)

402. (v.) SAVILLA JANE MIDDLESWORTH5, was born 1 June 1837 in New Jersey and died 30 May 1909. She married William Thomas Jennings, the son of Stephen Jennings and Elizabeth Harris. William was born 31 July 1837 in New York and died 12 February 1903. The 1840 census for Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan (page 26) lists two females under the age of 5 in the household of Isaac and Sarah Middlesworth, these two girls would be Sarah age 4 and Savilla Jane age 3. Savilla appears on the 1850 United States Census as Jane Middlesworth, age 13. She attended school that year (page 263). The 1860 census places the household of Savilla's father-in-law, Stephen Jennings (dwelling number 2932), next to the household of Savilla's brother, John Middlesworth (dwelling number 2933). William and Savilla Jennings lived with William's parents. William's sister, Elvira Jennings, was married to Savilla's brother, John Middlesworth. Savilla and John's father, Isaac Middlesworth lived in dwelling number 2934 in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). In earlier versions of Read Family Connections, I listed Savilla and Jane as two separate individuals. This was based on the research done by Ward. However, the records for Byron Cemetery in Byron, Michigan make it clear that there were not two separate individuals. This daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Snook) Middlesworth is listed as Savilla Jane Jennings in the cemetery records. She and William Jennings are buried in Byron Cemetery, block 30, lot 2, graves 3 (William) and 6 (Savilla), Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Child of William Jennings and Savilla Middlesworth:

1072. (i.) GEORGE W. JENNINGS6, was born 11 March 1866 and died 25 November 1934. He married, on 14 February 1888, Emma Crampton. After George's death, Emma married R.J. Gillespie as her second husband. George Jennings is buried in Byron Cemetery, block 43, lot 3, graves 3, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. According to cemetery records his grave is unmarked. In 1934, he brought the body of his son William Jennings to Byron for burial. William died of pneumonia. While in Byron George also became ill with pneumonia and died 8 days after his son. Children of George Jennings and Emma Crampton:

1406. (i.) WILLIAM JENNINGS7, was born circa 1889 and died 17 November 1934, age 45. Cause of death was pneumonia. He is buried in Byron Cemetery, block 43, lot 4, grave 2, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.

404. (vii.) ELMIRA MIDDLESWORTH5, was born circa 1840 in Michigan and died unknown. In 1850, Elmira lived with her parents and attended school in Argentine County (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850). In 1860, Elmira (spelled Almira in the census), was the oldest Middlesworth child living in her widower father's household. Her father had not yet married his second wife Laura Spense. The census indicates that Elmira was a "house keeper," meaning that she was keeping house for her father and her seven younger siblings. Her sister Matilda was also listed as a "housekeeper." The other children in the household were Henraetta, Irena, Robert, Elizabeth, Isaac and Olive. All of the Middlesworth children, with the exception of Olive (who was four year old) attended school during 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). Elmira was 19 according to the census, yet she was still in school. In 1850, her sister Mary, who was then 17, had finished her schooling.

405. (viii.) MATILDA MIDDLESWORTH5, was born 29 April 1842 in Michigan and died 2 November 1903. In an earlier version of Read Family Connections I listed a daughter between Elmira and Matilda named Martha. This was based on the work done by Ward. However, there is no Martha Middlesworth. The 1850 census of Argentine Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan (page 263) lists Matilda as Martha, but the 1860 census and burial records are for Matilda Middlesworth. The 1850 census places her age at 8. She had not yet begun attending school in 1850 (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850). Matilda was living with her widower father in 1860. She had her sister, Elmira, were keeping house for their father. Matilda was still in school in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). Matilda married on 26 November 1862, Omar Barnes Matilda is buried with two of her sons in Byron Cemetery, block 17, lot 12, grave 3, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Children of Omar Barnes and Matilda Middlesworth:

1074. (i.) HERBERT A. BARNES6, was born 20 January 1867 and died 23 February 1913. He is buried in Byron Cemetery, block 17, lot 12, grave 6, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.

1075. (ii.) HARLEY BARNES6, was born 19 January 1875 and died 8 May 1910. He married Hattie LaDue, daughter of Griffith LaDue and Elizabeth Crandell. Her sister Grace LaDue married Harley's first cousin, William Jennings (Savilla Jane Middlesworth5, Isaac Middlesworth4, Sarah Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1). Hattie LaDue Barnes was born 15 August 1875 and died 11 April 1914. Harley and Hattie are buried in Byron Cemetery, block 17, lot 12, graves 5 (Hattie) and 6 (Herbert), Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Children of Harley and Hattie Barnes:

1408. (i.) RUTH BARNES7.

1409. (ii.) GLEN BARNES7.

1410. (iii.) ALBERT BARNES7.

406. (ix.) HENRAETTA MIDDLESWORTH5, was born 30 June 1844 in Michigan and died 7 October 1860, age 16 years, 3 months and 8 days. She is buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. In 1850, Henraetta lived with her parents in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan. She was attending school in 1850. When the 1860 census was taken, she was still in school and still lived in her father's household (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). Henraetta died a little over a month after the census taker enumerated her father's home.

407. (x.) IRENA SUSAN MIDDLESWORTH5, was born 1846 in Michigan and died 1874 in Michigan. She appears on the 1850 census as "Susan Middlesworth" and on the 1860 census as "Irena Middlesworth" (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). Irena lived with her parents in both census years. She did not attend school in 1850 (she was only four years old). She did attend school in 1860 (her age in the 1860 census was 14). In earlier versions of Read Family Connections, I listed Irena and Susan as two separate individuals. This was based on the research done by Ward. However, the 1850 and 1860 census and records for Byron Cemetery in Byron, Michigan make it clear that there were not two separate individuals. This daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Snook) Middlesworth is listed as Irena Kelly in the cemetery records. She appears as a 4 year named Susan in the 1850 census and as a 14 year old named Irena in the 1860 census. Irena married John Karson Kelly. He was born 1843 and died in 1883. Children of Irena Middlesworth and John Kelly:

1076. (i.) GEORGE W. KELLY6, was born 30 or 31 October 1855 and died 2 December 1855, age 1 month and 2 days. He is buried Byron Cemetery, block 35, lot 9, grave 2, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawasee County, Michigan.

1077. (ii.) LIZZIE B. KELLY6, was born 1869 in Michigan and died 1886 (Ward).

1078. (iii.) LILLIE M. KELLY6, was born 1870 in Michigan and died 1886 (Ward).

1079. (iv.) EMMA L. KELLY6, was born 1872 in Michigan and died unknown (Ward).

408. (xi.) Private ROBERT F. MIDDLESWORTH5, was born 1848 in Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan and died 17 June 1864 Petersburg, Virginia. Robert appears in both the 1850 and 1860 census as a member of the household of Isaac Middlewsorth. In 1860, he attended school (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). He served in the Michigan Infantry, Co. E., Second Regiment during the Civil War. Robert enlisted 12 April 1864. His enlistment records indicate that he gave his age as 18 (he was actually 16) and his place of residence as St. Johns, Michigan (which is serval miles from his father's farm). It appears that Robert lied about his age, and possibly his residence, in order to enlist. Whether his father and step-mother knew that he was enlisting, or if he ran away to join the army is unknown. He died a little over two months later in front of Petersburg, Virginia at the beginning of the seige of that city. There is a memorial stone for Robert in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. His remains are probably in Virginia.

409. (xii.) ELIZABETH MIDDLESWORTH5, was born circa 1849 in Michigan and died unknown. She appears on both the 1850 and 1860 census in Isaac Middleworth's household. In 1850, she was a one year old child. By 1860, she was attending school in Argentine Township (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860).

410. (xiii.) ISAAC MIDDLESWORTH, Jr.5, was born 1854 in Michigan and died 1884. He appears on the 1860 census living in his widower father's household. He attended school in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860). He married Emma E. Wade. She was born in 1850 and died in 1878. They are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan.

411. (xiv.) OLIVE J. MIDDLESWORTH5, was born 1855 in Michigan and died 1869. She was a resident of her widower father's household in 1860. Olive was the only Middlesworth child not attending school in 1860 (1850 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 263, September 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Argentine Township, Genesee County, Michigan, page 375, 25 August 1860).

412. (xv.) CHARLES MIDDLESWORTH5, was 29 December 1857 in Michigan. His mother died within a week of his birth. Charles died on 12 April 1858, age 3 months, 14 days. He is buried in Byron Cemetery, block 18, lot 4, grave 7, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. He shares a stone with his mother, Sarah Ann Snook Middlesworth.

ABRAHAM J. MIDDLESWORTH4

106. ABRAHAM J. MIDDLESWORTH4, (Sarah Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 6 March 1811 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 1900 in Michigan. He married Mary C. Green. She was born in 1813 in New Jersey and died 1838 in Michigan. They are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. Abraham and Mary's oldest child (Lucinda) was born in New Jersey in 1834. Their twin sons, Levi and George, were born in Michigan on 13 August 1838. This places their move from New Jersey to Michigan between the years 1834 and 1838. It is probable that the family left with Abraham's parents and other siblings after the death of his grandfather, Isaac Read, Sr. in March 1838. This would place their arrival in Michigan between late March and early August 1838.

WILLIAM MIDDLESWORTH4

107. WILLIAM MIDDLESWORTH4 (Sarah Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 9 June 1816 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 10 December 1869 in Michigan, age 53 years, 6 months and 1 day. He married first, on 28 September 1837, in New Jersey Lucinda Kays. She died 7 February 1856 in Michigan. William married second, after 1856 in Michigan, Catherine (Last name unknown). William and Lucinda are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. William and Lucinda appear to be the only members of the Middlesworth clan who did not go to Michigan in 1838. Their oldest three children (Albert, Charlotte and Sarah) were born in New Jersey between 1839 and 1841. Their fourth child, Isaac, was born in Michigan in 1844. William and Lucinda left new Jersey between 1841 and 1844 for Michigan. This is approximately two to five years after the rest of the Middlesworth clan left New Jersey for Michigan. Why William remainded behind for several years is unknown. Perhaps Lucinda was loathe to leave her family behind. Or, William may have been settling family business for his father, brothers and brother-in-law (such as selling land and livestock), before making the trip west.

108. JAMES L. MIDDLESWORTH4 (Sarah Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 12 December 1821 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 22 September 1899 in Michigan. He married first, on 28 May 1845 in Shiawassee County, Michigan, Eve Elizabeth Wendell. She was born 25 June 1828 in New York and died 20 May 1861 in Michigan, age 32 years, 10 months and 25 days. James married second, after 1861 in Michigan, Lucinda L. Pratt. John and Eva are buried in Byron Cemetery, Byron, Burns Township, Shiawassee County, Michigan. James was just past his 16th birthday when his grandfather, Isaac Read, Sr. died in March 1838. His parents probably left for Michigan between March and August 1838. As James had not yet reached his majority, it is likely that he was in his parent's party when they traveled west. There is a James Middlesworth listed in the 1870 United States Federal Census in Argentine Township, Genessee County, Michigan (1870:400).
