JOSEPH READ, III3
17. JOSEPH READ, III3 (Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1) was born 29 April 1790 in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey; died 8 August 1849 probably in Henry County, Indiana. He married on 11 April 1811, LYDIA HART of Green Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. Their wedding was recorded in the diary of Isaac Crisman (Reuther n.d.) Lydia was the daughter of William Hart, Sr. and Mary McEwen. She was born 9 January 1793 and died 20 April 1836. Joseph is listed as head of household in the 1830 United States Federal Census. He resided in Green Township, Sussex County. After Lydia's death he migrated to Stoney Creek Township, Henry County, Indiana and settled in the vicinity of Blountsville, Indiana (Kern 1938). Joseph married a second wife in Indiana. Kern mentions a letter written by Joseph home to a family member in New Jersey. The letter was dated 2 June 1838, it was written three months after Joseph's father died. I suspect it was partially in response to the settlement of Isaac Read, Sr.'s estate as Joseph was named as an heir in his father's will. In the letter Joseph stated that he had remarried and had children (Kern's plural) by the second wife. Unfortunately, Kern did not describe the letter in detail, nor did he mention the name of the second wife or the child/children. It is very possible that Joseph's second wife was CELINDA WOLCUTT. According to the collections of the Indiana State Library Geneaology Division (Indiana Marriages Through 1850), Joseph Reed and Celinda Wolcutt were married in Henry County, Indiana on 15 December 1836 (8 months after Lydia Hart Reed died). Joseph is listed as head of household in the 1840 United States Federal Census for Stoney Creek Township. There were 7 inidividuals in the household. Two of these individuals were males between the ages of 50 and 60 (born 1780 through 1790). One of these males is Joseph Read, the other may be his new father-in-law. There were two females between the ages of 20 and 30 (born 1810 through 1820). One of the women is probably Joseph's second wife (Celinda Wolcutt?) and the other may be his daughter by Lydia, Elizabeth Read (born 1820). There is one male age 16 to 20 (born 1820 through 1824), probably Joseph's son by Lydia, Nelson Read (born 1821). There is one female between the ages of 16 and 20, probably Joseph and Lydia's daughter Sarah C. Read (born 1824). And finaly, there is one male child under the age of 5 (born 1835 through 1840) who is probably Joseph's son by his second wife. Three of Joseph and Lydia's daughters stayed behind in New Jersey: Euphemia, Mary Ann, and Lydia Read. The former two were married by 1836. Lydia was just over 10 when her mother died. She appears to have been left behind in New Jersey with her elder sisters. Lydia resided in Newton, Sussex County, New Jersey as an adult. Joseph and Lydia's sons, William and Isaac Read, appear to have gone to Indiana with their father (see below).
