ROLL OF HONOR—WAR OF 1812

The photograph is of the interior of Fort McHenry at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Baltimore, Maryland. It was the flag flying over this fort that features prominently in Francis Scott Key's poem, the Star-Spangled Banner. The flag was large, measuring 30 feet by 42 feet, and was made by Baltimore Flagmaker Mary Pickersgill. Her home is open as a museum in Baltimore City. Mary's flag is part of the collections of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Photo by Esther Doyle Read, July 2002.
