ELIZABETH "BETSY" READ3 (Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1) was born 16 June 1792 in Knowlton Township, Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey; died 18 April 1879, age 86 years, 10 months and 2 days, in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She married AARON LUSE on 22 December 1808 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Sussex County Marriages). He was the son of William Luse and Martha Norcross. Aaron was born 6 March 1787 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 9 December 1847, age 60 years, 8 months and 3 days, in Warren County, New Jersey (Armstrong 1979:345-350; Kern 1938). Elizabeth Luse appears as head-of-household on the 1850 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. She is living in the house with 30 year old Mary Ruff. Elizabeth's real estate value is given as $11,000 (page 488). By 1860, Elizabeth had reduced her real estate holdings. The census indicates that she owned $1,000 worth of real estate and had a personal estate of valued at $300. Her 21 year old granddaughter, Sarah Sharp, shared the house with her. Their post office in 1860 was Johnsonburg (page 200). Elizabeth and Aaron Luse are buried in Johnsonburg Christian Church Yard, Johnsonburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. SARAH MARGARET LUSE4

125. SARAH MARGARET LUSE4 (Elizabeth Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 15 July 1818 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 5 December 1839, probably in Warren County, New Jersey. She married Levi Howell, on 4 June 1838 in Warren County (Armstrong 1979:349; Howell and Phethean 2000:44; Kern 1938; Warren County Marriages). He was the son of George G. Howell and Lydia Johnston. Levi was born 27 February 1817 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 13 February 1904 in Trucksville, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania (Howell and Phethean 2000:44). Levi Howell was a nephew of Richard and Rebecca (Howell) Read. Richard Read was Elizabeth Read Luse's brother, and hence, Sarah Margaret's uncle. Although Levi and Sarah Margaret shared the same uncle and aunt, they were not blood relatives (that I know of).

In 1839, Levi settled in North Moreland, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. By the time of his death in 1904, he was living in Trucksville, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Levi married three more times after Sarah's death. His second wife was Oliva Smith (February 1818-1 May 1842), daughter of Samuel G. Smith and Margaret DeWitt; the third wife was Ruth Ann Rogers (January 1825-14 December 1853); and his fourth wife was Emaline Griffin Vaughan (30 May 1821-30 November 1898). Levi is buried with Emeline in Cedar Crest Cemetery in Trucksville. Olivia Smith Howell and Ruth Rogers Howell are buried in Rogers Cemetery, Centermoreland, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Sarah is buried in Union Cemetery on Route 519 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Ibid:44-45).

CHILDREN OF SARAH MARGARET LUSE AND LEVI HOWELL:

475. (i.) SARAH ELIZABETH HOWELL5, was born 1839 and died unknown, probably in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. According to Howell and Phethean (2000:107), she was possibly raised by her grandparents after her mother's death in 1839, as she does not appear on the 1850 census in Levi Howell's household. If she was raised by her grandparents, it was her paternal grandparents. She does not appear in the household of her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Luse on the 1850 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey (page 488). Sarah Elizbeth married, on 25 November 1857, her second cousin once removed, (256) ANDREW JACKSON COURSEN4, (Hannah Read3, John2, Joseph1) (Howell and Phethean 2000:107; Warren County Marriages). He was born 21 April 1831 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 31 January 1892 (Murcko 1998), possibly in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In 1880, the Coursen family was living on Parrish Street, in the 14th Ward, Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Andrew was a retail grocer (Howell and Phethean 2000:107). Children of Sarah Elizabeth and Andrew Jackson Coursen: see under Andrew Jackson Coursen, use the link provided in this paragraph (2 children (1862-1859), 12 grandchidren (1892-1911), and 10 great-grandchildren).

JOSEPH BENJAMIN LUSE/LUCE4

128. JOSEPH BENJAMIN LUSE/LUCE4 (Elizabeth Read,3, Isaac, Sr.2, Joseph1), was born 12 March 1826 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 5 December 1902. He married Christeen Wintermute on 1 February 1849 in Warren County. Christeen was the daughter of William Wintermute and Julia Ann (or Julianne) Savercool. She was born 18 April 1823 near Stillwater, in either Sussex or Warren County, New Jersey and died 5 May 1902 (Armstrong 1979:349; Johnsonburg Christian Cemetery; Kern 1938). Joseph served on the Frelinghuysen Town Committee between 1861 and 1862 (Snell 1881:687). In 1870, Joseph and Christten lived with their two children in Frelinghuysen Township, post office Vienna. They owned a farm valued at $10,000 and had a personal estate valued at $2,000. The family had a hired farm hand named John Glogly. John boarded with the Luses. He was born circa 1846 in Ireland. The box on the census labeled "Male Citizens of the U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards" is not checked for JOhn on the census. He was 24 at the time of the census. It is proable that he was not yet a naturalized U.S. citizen (1870 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 71A, 27 July 1870). In 1880, Joseph and Christeen lived on a farm in Frelinghuysen Township. They shared their home with their divorced daughter Jane and their grandson George Van Horn (1880 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 326C). Joseph and Christeen are buried in Johnsburg Christian Cemetery, Johnsburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their tombstone, which was field checked in June 1997, is labeled "LUCE."

CHILDREN OF JOSEPH BENJAMIN LUSE/LUCE AND CHRISTEEN WINTERMUTE:

476. (i.) LYDIA "JANE" LUCE5, was born 2 November 1850 in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509771; Ruether n.d.) and died 5 October 1892 (Ruether n.d.). Lydia lived at home with her parents in 1870. She was 19 years old and had completed her schooling (1870 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 71A, 27 July 1870). She married Silas Van Horn on 18 February 1871 (Warren County Marriages). Silas was the son of David Green Van Horn and Harriet Young. He was born in 1849 in Frelinghuysen, New Jersey. The Van Horn farm on the 1860 United States Federal Census for Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey was listed as dwelling number 128, Lydia's grandmother, Elizabeth Luse lived in dwelling number 126. Lydia's aunt Martha Luse Sharp lived in dwelling number 133 (page 200, 201). Silas and Lydia probably knew each other from childhood. However, their marriage did not last long. By 1880, Lydia and Silas were divorced. Lydia and her young son George had moved back to Lydia's parent's farm. The 1880 census gives her name as "Jane Luce" (1880 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 326C). Lydia is buried under "Luce" not "Van Horn" in the Johnsonburg Christian Church yard, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.).

Silas's first cousin, Richard Marshall Van Horn, married Ada Minerva Read (Ira C. Read4, Martin 3, Samuel 2, Joseph1) who was Lydia's third cousin. Silas and Sarah Elizabeth Howell (Lydia's first cousin) were second cousins through their descent from Sampson Howell. Silas's line of descent was as follows: David Green Van Horn4, Levina Howell3, Sampson Howell2, Sampson Howell1. Sarah's line of decent was: Levi Howell4, George Green Howell3, Levi Howell2, Sampson Howell1. Children of Lydia and Silas Van Horn:

981. (i.) GEORGE VAN HORN6, was born 8 November 1873 and died unknown. In 1880, he resided with his maternal grandparents and his mother on the Luce farm in Frelinghuysen Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 326C).

He is buried in Johnsonburg Christian Church yard, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Ruether n.d.).
