PROBATE RECORDS OF ISAAC READ, Jr. and CLARISSA M. READ
The probate records of Isaac Read, Jr. and his daughter, Clarissa M. Read are housed in the office of the Surrogate Court of Warren County, New Jersey, which is located in the county court house in Belvidere New Jersey. The transcripts included below use the original spelling and punctuation found in the documents. The copies of the documents I consulted are not the original documents, but are copies made by the clerk of the Surrogate Court and placed in the County's will and inventory books. Isaac's probate records were all hand written and feature a pronounced lack of punctuation; as well as nineteenth century spellings, such as "witnefs" for witness. Clarissa's records were all typed (they date to the years 1915 through 1916). The records transcribed in this section, as well as those not included, are publically available. Copies of the documents may be ordered for a modest fee. For more information contact:
Printing Tip: The inventory is in table form. In order to print the full table (without having the right edge cut off) go to "page set up" and select "landscape".
PROBATE RECORDS OF ISAAC READ, Jr.
The records transcribed in this section consist of papers filed with the court by Isaac's widow, Abigail W. (Buckley) Read and his son Saron Wade Read. These documents include papers dealing with the administration of the estate and Isaac's inventory. Isaac Read, Jr. died intestate on 5 March 1876. "Intestate" means that he died without a will. Normally Abigail, as his widow, would have been the administratrix of the estate. But Abigal was 67 years old when Isaac died. She evidently felt that she was not capable of handling the many stressful deatails associated with handling an estate as large as her late husband's. Instead, Abigail asked the court to appoint her eldest son Saron Reed as the administrator of the estate. After 11 April 1876, Saron handled the administration of Isaac's estate. Isaac's Inventory is of interest as it was taken in May 1879, 3 years after his death. It does not include household furnishings, only farm equipment and animals. By the time his daughter Clarissa died, her inventory consisted only of a listing of her assests in the First National Bank of Blairstown.Petition for Administration 10 April 1876 |

PROBATE RECORDS OF CLARISSA M. READ
The records transcribed in this section consist of papers filed with the court by Clarissa's sister, Abbie J. (Read) Christian, who was administratrix of Clarissa's estate. Clarissa was basically a pauper when she died on 30 January 1915. She was, as the saying goes "land rich and money poor." Abbie could not pay the estate debts with the money in Clarissa's bank account, which came to a total of $10. The following papers are Abbie's petition to the court for permission to sell Clarissa's half of the family farm. As well as documents detailing the ultimate sale of the propery. This was the same land which had been deeded to their father, Isaac Read, Jr., by their grandfather, Isaac Reed, Sr. in 1816 (Sussex County Land Records, Book G2, pages 483-484). The 1816 deed had described 120.25 acres. Resurvey in 1882 found the property to contain 127 acres. The property was resurveyed in 1882 two years after the death of Clarissa and Abbie's mother, Abigail Buckley Read. Their father Isaac had died on 5 March 1876. Clarissa and her sister Harriet Read Cook received the family farm as tenants in common (that is they both owned the farm).Administration Petition, Book 7, page 504 |

Petition for the Sale of Lands for the Payment of Debts
Warren County, New Jersey Surrogate Court Records, Orphans Court Minutes, Book 20, pages 534 - 536
In the Matter of the Estate of Clarissa M Read, deceased}
To the Orphan's Court of the county of Warren:
The petition of Abbie J Christian respectfully shows that on the first day of September, A.D. Nineteen hundred and fifteen, she was appointed by the surrogate of the county of Warren administratrix of the estate of the said Clarissa M Read, deceased; and your petitioner further shows that she has discovered and verily believes that the personal property of the said deceased is insufficient [sic] to pay her debts, and that she hereby exhibits uner oath true account of the said personal estate and debts so far as she can discover the same, which account is hereto annexed.
And your petitioner further shows that the said Clarissa M Read died seized of an equal undivided one half interest in a certain tract of land situate in the township of Hope, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey and described in the Report of the sale by the commissioners appointed by an order of the Court of Common Pleas dated Jan, 19, 1882, as follows:
Lot No Two: Being a farm situated in said Township of Hope, adjoining lot, No One, and containing one hundred and twenty-seven acres", and now owned by the said Harriet Cook and the estate of the said Clarissa M Read, deceased, as joint tenants in common.
That the said lands consist of a farm, whereon is erected a house and barn, somewhat out of repair, valued, as nearly as your petitioner can ascertain, at the sum of Four Hundred ($400.00) dollars.
Your petitioner therefore requests the aid of the court in the premises, and prays that an order may be made as provided by law requiring all persons interested in such lands, tenaments, hereditaments and real estate to appear before the court at a certain day and place to show cause why so much of the above cescribed lands, tenements, heriditaments [sic] and real estate whereof the said Clarrissa M Read, deceased, died seized as aforesaid should not be sold as will be sufficient to pay the debts of the said deceased.
