ELIZABETH OGDEN "LIZZIE" KONKLE SWAYZE4
213. ELIZABETH OGDEN KONKLE4 (Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 18 March 1817 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and baptised 7 June 1818, Luthern Congregation of Hardwick, Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey (GMNJ 42:33, 62; Kern 1938). The year before she was born, the church had come under the care of the Presbyterian Synod of New Brunswick. It was organized as a Presbyterian Church in 1823. It is currently known as Stillwater Presbyterian Church (Kern 1938; Snell 1881:385-386). Elizabeth wsa known as "Lizzie," she appears to have been named after her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Ogden Read Winterstein. Lizzie appears on the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census as a resident of her parent's home. She was single during all three census years (1830 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 403; 1840 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 378; 1850 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 494). Lizzie may have been a school teacher in Blairstown, according to a 1939 history of the town:
In 1860, Elizabeth "Conckle" lived in the village of Hope in the household of John Rusling. Rusling was a fromer inn keeper turned tailor. Elizabeth was employed as a "tailoress," as was Margaret Beatty, another young woman who boarded with the Ruslings. The Russinlg family included John, his wife Margaret and four of their children: Robert (23), Edward (16), John (11) and Harriet (9) (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 418, 30 July 1860).
Lizzie was about 53 years old when she married Edward Swayze, Sr, as his second wife. They were married between 17 April 1869 and 1 June 1870. The first date marks the death of Edward's first wife, Ellen Hunt Swazye (Ruether n.d., see Swayze cemetery). The second date is the official enumeration date of the 1870 United States Federal census; Edward and Elizabeth were married by that date (1870 United States Federal Census Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 169B). Edward and Elizabeth lived in Hardwick Township in 1870, their household consisted of Edward and Elizabeth and three of Edward's children by his first marriage: Daniel Swayze, age 26 and Edward W. Swayze, Jr., age 19; Edward Jr.'s wife Eliza (age 20) and Edward Sr.'s daughter Rebecca C. Swayze (age 15). By 1880, Edward and Elizabeth were no longer living in Hardwick Township, they had moved to Hope Township. The Swayze household in 1880 consisted of Edward (age 65) and Elizabeth Swayze (age 63, who is listed as "Lizzie O. Swayze") and Edward's son Edward, Jr. (age 30) and daughter-in-law, Eliza Swayze (age 30). Both of the Edwards were farmers. Lizzie O. (Konkle) Swayze was "keeping house" and Eliza Swayze worked as a domestic servant (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 199, page 417). The Swayze household is listed in the 1880 census after the household of James and Rachael Cyphers. In 1887, their daughter Sarah D. Cyphers would marry Elizabeth Konkle Swayze's second cousin, Soren Wade Read4 (Isaac Read, Jr.3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1).
Edward Swayze, Sr. died 25 August 1888, age 72 years and 8 months (which places his birth date on 25 December 1815). He was buried in Swayze Cemetery in Hope Township, Warren County with his first wife, Ellanor (or Ellen) Hunt Swayze. Elizabeth lived another 11 years, dieing on 12 March 1899. She was not buried with Edward, but was interred in Johnsonburg Christian Church burial ground in Johnsburg, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Her parents are also buried there (Kern 1938; Ruether n.d.). Elizabeth did not have biological children.
