SUSANNA MOOT KONKLE BRUGLER4

215. SUSANNA MOOT KONKLE4 (Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 21 August 1821 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 15 August 1919 (Kern 1938; Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery). She married on Saturday, 1 January 1848, in the afternoon, James Brugler, Jr.. James was the son of James Brugler, Sr. and Anna Hagaman. He was born 9 May 1825, in Warrington, Warren County, New Jersey and died 27 April 1861, in Hainesburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Cummins 1911:398; Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery). They were married by the Rev. Edward Barrass, a Baptist Minister. Barrass's notes indicate that both Susanna and James were residents of Knowlton Township, Warren County. Barrass charged them $3.50 for his services (Bronwell 1947:4). In 1860, James and Susanna Brugler lived in Blairstown Township (which had once been a part of Knowlton Township). Their post office was Blairstown. They owned a farm valued at $5,390 and had a personal estate worth $1,000. They were listed as dwelling 536, family 536. The household was comprised of James and Susanna (spelled Susannah in the census), five of their children (Milton, Anna, Charles, Aaron and James) and a hired hand named William Brown. Brown was 44 years old, born in New Jersey. The census gives his occupation as laborer (1860 United States Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 565, 18 July 1860). James died the year after the 1860 census was taken. He was 36 years old. The family buried him in the church yard of Green's Chapel in Mount Hermon (now the Mount Hermon United Methodist Church). Susannah was left to raise their five children, who ranged in age from an infant to 12 years old. The 1870 census lists her as the head of household. She held real estate valued at $17,000 and a personal estate valued at $2,000. She was one of the few women in the area to have an occupation listed for her in the census. The 1870 census indicated that she was a farmer. Her sons Milton and Aaron worked as laborers on the farm. Susannah (or Susan as the census names her) had five childrern living at home: Milton, Anna, Charles, Aaron and James. Her widowed mother, Mary Read Konkle, also lived with the family (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 31 A-B, 5 July 1870). Susannah was still living with her son Milton in 1880, although he had married and had children of his own by that time. Milton's farm was located in Blairstown Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 191, page 286A, 7 June 1880). By 1910, Susanna was living with her daughter Anna McCain and her family on Mount Hermon Road in Blairstown Township (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairswtown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 28 April 1910, sheet number 6B). She died a few days before her 98th birthday on 15 August 1919. She was buried with her husband and her daughter Emma Caroline and son Milton in Mount Hermon Methodist Church Yard. The family plot was visited on 24 March 2004. It is located about half-way up the slope behind the Mount Hermon United Methodist church. It is marked by a large obelisk which is inscribed as follows:

CHILDREN OF SUSANNA MOOT KONKLE AND JAMES BRUGLER, Jr.:

1007. (iv.) JOHN "MILTON" BRUGLER5, was born 5 October 1848 in Mt Hermon, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 21 June 1883 at New Brunswick, New Jersey (Cummins 1911; Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery). An earlier version of Read Family Connections gave his date of death as 14 August 1888 in Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey. This data came from the Latter Day Saints files (LDS Disc #7, Pin 938373 and Film #1985574), but it appears to be in error. The 1883 date is from Milton's grave stone in Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery, as well as from George Wycoff Cummins's History of Warren County, New Jersey (1911:398). Milton married 29 December 1870, at Hope, New Jersey, Mary Elizabeth Decker, the daughter of Isaac Janson Decker and Mary Sutton. She was born 1 December 1848 in Lebanon, New Jersey and died 28 October 1907, at Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey (Cummins 1911; Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery). Milton and Mary Elizabeth are buried in what is now Mount Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery (formerly Green's Chapel).

1008. (ii.) ANNA MARY "ANNIE" BRUGLER5, was born 5 February 1850 in Blairstown Township, New Jersey and died 28 February 1946 (Batch# C509751, sheet 00, Type: film (Blairstown Township birth records); Mt Hermon Merthodist Cemetery, Anna's gravestone gives her birthdate as 15 February 1850). She married circa 1873, Lewis M. McCain, the son of Jeremiah and Amelia McCain. Anna and Lewis are buried in the Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church Yard (also known as Green's Chapel), Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

841. (iii.) EMMA CAROLINE BRUGLER5, was born 2 March 1852 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died 25 November 1856, age 4 years, 8 months and 23 days. She is buried in Hainesburg Cemetery, Hainesburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Disc #7, Pin 938375 and Film #2034853; Mt Hermon Cemetery). Her grave was visitied on 24 March 2004, see above for transcription.

1009. (iv.) CHARLES EDWARD BRUGLER5, was born 1855 in Warren County, New Jersey and died January 1929, at his home in Knoxville, Tioga County, Pennsylvania (Tice n.d.). Charles married his second cousin, (3001) Rosa Anna Bunnell5 (Mary Margaret Lanterman4, Rachael Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), on 15 April 1877 in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Film #2034476).

1010. (v.) AARON C. BRUGLER5, was born 1857 in New Jersey and died 1909 (LDS, Disc #7, Pin 938377 and Film #1985574–birth date given is circa 1854; Reuther n.d.). In 1860, he lived at home with his parents in Blairstown Township (1860 United States Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 565, 18 July 1860). Aaron's father died in 1860 and his mother took over management of the family farm. By 1870, Aaron and his elder brother Milton were working on the farm as laborers. Aaron attended school during the 1870 census year (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 31 A-B, 5 July 1870). Sometime between 1870 and 1880, Aaron left the farm. He was working as a clerk in a store in 1880 and he boarded with 72 year old Maria Johnson in Frelinghuysen Township. John and Henrietta Slusher (both 30 years old) also lived in the household. John was a farm hand and Henrietta was a house keeper (1880 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 317A). Aaron married after 1880, Elizabeth Shaw Cooke, the daughter of Abram W. and Emma L. Cooke. She was born circa 1865 and died unknown. After Aaron's death in 1909, Elizaeth moved back in with her parents. Abram and Emma lived on a farm in Frelinghuysen Township. The census places their house in the village of Marksboro. Although they lived on a farm, Abram (who was 71) was no longer farming. He lived on his "own income," as did his daughter Elizabeth (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 125, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9B, 3 May 1910). Aaron and Elizabeth are buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church yard, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.).

1011. (vi.) JAMES "ORISON" BRUGLER5, was born 1860 in New Jersey and died unknown (1860 United States Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 565, 18 July 1860; LDS, Disc #7, Pin 938378 and Film #1985574–birth date given is circa 1856). In 1860, he lived at home with his parents in Blairstown Township. The census gives his age as three months (page 565). His father died in April 1861. Orison grew up on the Brugler farm with his mother, older sister Anna and three older borthers—Milton, Charles and Aaron. His grandmother Konkle lived with the family in 1870. Orison, or James as the census named him, attended school during the 1870 census year. His older brothers Charles and Aaron also attended school with him (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 31 A-B, 5 July 1870). By 1880, Orison had moved out of his mother's home and was earning his living as a farm hand. He was employed by and lived with Thomas and Margaret West (age 57 and 61 respectively). Their farm was located in Blairstown Township, Warren County. A young woman named Elbin Aber (age 15) also lived in the household. She appears to have been a live-in domestic servant (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 191, sheet 285A, 3 June 1880). Orison married circa 1883, Elizabeth A. "Lizzie" (Last name unknown), born in 1860 and died in 1923. The couple resided on a farm inside the town limits of Belvidere in 1910. Orison was a farmer, he owned the land free of all mortgages. The census indicates that he was an employer. Orison and Lizzie did not have chldren in 1910. The census indicates that Lizie had never had children (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 122, Belvidere Town, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5A, 10 April 1910). In 1930, Orison Brugler lived at 589 Independence Street, Bevlidere, Warren County, New Jersey. He owned the home, which was valued at $7,000. There were three families resident in the dwelling. Orison was listed in the census as family 608, his sister, Anna M. (Konkle) McCain was family 609, and Gershom and Josephine Parr were family number 610. Anna McCain and the Parrs paid rent. Orison appears to have been retired as no occupation was listed for him in the census. According to the census, Orison Brugler owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Town of Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-3, sheet 20B, 23 April 1930). Orison and Elizabeth Brugler are buried in Belvidere Cemetery (Ruether n.d.).
