SAMUEL JOHNSON KONKLE4

216. SAMUEL JOHNSON KONKLE4 (Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 25 June 1823 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 1 August 1854, possibly in Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Reuther n.d.). Samuel is listed as a male child residing in the household of John B. Konkle on both the 1830 and the 1840 census (1830 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 403; 1840 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 378).

Samuel married on 28 March 1850, Mary Ann Tunison, the daughter of Tunis H. Tunison, Esq. and Mary Ann Rockafeller of Mansfield Township, Warren County (Kern 1938; Snell 1881:731-732). Their wedding was announced in the Warren Journal on 4 April 1850:

On the 28thult. by [Rev. J.H. Townley], J. Conkling, of Marksboro, to Mary Tunison, daughter of Tunis H. Tunison, Esq. of Mansfield."

The Warren County marriage records list Samuel as "Johnson Conkling". The Rev. J.H. Townley (John H. Townley) was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Hackettstown (Snell gives the name as first Presbyterian Church of Independence, Hackettstown), in Warren County between 26 July 1843 and October 1851 (Snell 1881:586). Why Samuel's name is given as Conkling is unknown. However, Snell makes it clear that Mary Tunison, the daughter of Tunis H. Tunison was married to Samuel Konkle. Snell's list of the children of Tunis H. Tunison states: "...Mary, whose first husband was Samuel J. Konkle, but is now the wife of John S. Ball..." (Snell 1881:732). The 1850 census lists Mary "Conkle"—who was married within the year—as a resident of the household of Tunis H. Tunison, Steward of the Warren County Poor House (1850 United States Federal Census, Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 291A, 15 August 1850). The 1850 census also lists "Johnson Conklin" and his wife Mary, who were married within the census years as residents of Mansfield township. Johnson was a carpenter. He and Mary had a boarder, or servant, named Mary Munn, who was 57 years old (1850 United States Federal Census, Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 297A, 6 September 1850).

Samuel and Mary were married a little over four years when Samuel died on 1 August 1854. At the time of his death he and Mary had two daughters and were expecting their third child. Samuel was buried in Egberts Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Bethel, Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). His son Samuel J. Konkle was born seven months later in March 1855. His daughter Mary Elizabeth Konkle died on 29 January 1859, a month past her sixth birthday. She was also buried in Egberts Methodist Episcopal Cemetery. After Samuel's death Mary Tunison Konkle returned to her parents home. She was living there in 1860 with her son Samuel Jr.. Their surname in the census is given as Tunison. Mary's parents, Tunis and Mary Tunison, were the steward and matron of the Warren County Poor House. Mary Tunison Konkle and her sister Emma worked as a domestics, possibly for their parents (1860 United States Federal Census, Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 705B, 10 July 1860). Mary sent her daughter Sarah Caroline, called Caroline Konkle on the census, to live with her in-laws, John and Mary Konkle. She was a resident of the farm in Hardwick Township in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 551B, 13 July 1860).

Mary Tunison Konkle married John Snover Ball in 1863 as her second husband, he owned a hotel in Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township (Kern 1938, gives his name as Snover Ball; Snell 1881:688, 732; Warren County Marriage Index, Vol. 2, Letter B:116). Mary was his second wife. His first wife was Caroline G. (Last Name Unknown). She died 5 March 1861, age 39 years, 6 months and 13 days (Reuther n.d.). John Snover Ball served as the tax collector for Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County between 1855 and 1857 (Snell 1881:687). John and Mary lived in Frelinghuysen Township in 1870 with several of John's children by his first marriage, as well as their son William H. Ball, age 4, who was their only child together. John Ball's occupation in the census was given as "inn keeper" (1870 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 75B, 5 August 1870). Mary's son, Samuel Konkle was still living in Mansfield Township. In 1870, Samuel was 15. He lived with Jacob and Emma France and worked as a laborer on their farm. He was not in school. The France farm was livsted as adjacent to the home of Samuel's maternal grandparents, Tunis and Mary Tunison. They had retired and were no longer running the Warren County Poor Farm (1870 United States Federal Census, Mansfield township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 274B, 28 July 1870).

Samuel Konkle, Jr. married by 1880. He and his wife Emma lived in the 1st election District of Oxford, Warren County when the 1880 census was enumerated. John and Mary Ball lived in the Village of Marksboro, where John was an innkeeper (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 204, 1st Election District, Oxford, Warren County, New Jersey, page 500A, 1 June 1880; Enumeration District 193, village of Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 317A, 2 June 1880). John Snover Ball died 25 March 1886, age 68 years, 2 months and 13 days. He was buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church Yard, Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. His first wife Caroline was also buried there (Reuther n.d.). The 1887 Warren County History and Directory lists Mrs. Mary Ball, householder, as a resident of Frelinghuysen Township. Her post office was Marksboro (Weaver and Kern 1887). Mary Tunison Konkle Ball died in 1907 and was buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church Yard.

CHILDREN OF SAMUEL JOHNSON KONKLE AND MARY TUNISON:

3003. (i.) SARAH "CAROLINE" CONKLING or KONKLE aka "CARRIE"5, was born 16 October 1850 in Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown (LDS Batch #C509831). She appears on the 1860 census as "Caroline Konkle," age 10. She was living with her paternal grandparents in 1860 and attending school (1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 551B, 13 July 1860). Carrie is hard to trace after 1860. The 1870 Census lists a Carrie Conkle age 25 (five years older than Carrie's actual age), who was working as a domestic for the family of Henry W. Johnson, a merchant in Hackettstown, New Jersey (1870 United States Federal Census, Washington Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 551B, 6 August 1870, Post Office Hackettstown). If this is the Carrie Conkle, daughter of Samuel and Mary, did she have to lie about her age to secure a position and earn a living? The 1880 census lists a Carrie S. Konkle, age 25, who was a student at the New Jersey State Normal and Model School in Trenton. She was boarding in one of the normal school's dormitories at 116 Clinton Street (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 99, Second District, First Ward, Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, page 205D, 12 & 14 June 1880). There is also a Carrie S. Konkle who married Cyrus L. Lanning, the son of Isaiah Lanning and Harriet D. Andrews. He was born in 1860 and died in 1922. In 1880, he lived with his parents in 1880 on their farm in Frelinghuysen Township and worked as a farm laborer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 193, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 318D, 3 June 1880). He and Carrie married after 1880. In 1920, Cyrus and Carrie rented a home at 60 High Street in Somerville, New Jersey. Cyrus was a house painter (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 139, Somerville Borough, Somerset County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 3 January 1920). They are buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church yard. The dates for Carrie S. Konkle on the stone are given as 1861 through 19[no date cut]. Their grave was visited on 14 April 2005. This final Carrie Konkle is 11 years younger than the Carrie Konkle of this essay.

1012. (ii.) MARY ELIZABETH CONKLE or KONKLE5, was born 16 December 1852 in Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 29 January 1859, age 6 years, 1 month and 14 days. She was buried in Egberts Methodist Episcopal Church yard in Bethel, Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509831; Ruether n.d.).

1013. (ii.) SAMUEL J. KONKLE5, was born 9 March 1855 in Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey, seven months after the death of his father (LDS Batch #C509831). He died unknown. In 1860, he lived with his mother and his mother's parents, Tunis and Mary Tunison, in Mansfield Township. His grandparents were the stewards of the Warren County Poor House and appear to have lived on the Poor House grounds. Samuel's surname is given as Tunison in the census, as is his widowed mother's (1860 United States Federal Census, Mansfield Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 705B, 10 July 1860). Samuel married circa 1877, Emma L. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1860 in New Jersey. In 1880, the couple lived in Oxford Township, Warren County. Samuel was a laborer. A young man named Owen George boarded with the couple. He was 18 years old and worked at the furnace in Oxford (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 204, 1st Election District, Oxford, Warren County, New Jersey, page 500A, 1 June 1880). By 1910, Samuel and Emma lived in Washington Borough, Warren County at 174 Wast Washington Street. Samuel worked as a packer in the organ factory in Washington, New Jersey. According to the census, Emma was the mother of one child, who was still living in 1910 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 152, West Election District, Washington Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet number 6B, 21 April 1910). Child of Samuel and Emma Konkle:

3008. (i.) CHILD KONKLE6, was born between 1880 and 1910. According to the census, Samuel and Emma Konkle had one living child in 1910. The child was not a resident of their household (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 152, West Election District, Washington Borough, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet number 6B, 21 April 1910).
