MARY CAROLINE KONKLE COOK4
219. MARY CAROLINE KONKLE4 (Mary Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 1832, probably in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1924 (Stillwater Cemetery). She appears to have gone by the name of Caroline from at least 1860 on. Caroline appears as a female child residing in the household of John B. Konkle on the 1830 and 1840 census (1840 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 378; 1840 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 378). She was single and 18 years old in 1850. Caroline lived with her parents when the 1850 census was enumerated (1850 United States Federal Census Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 494B, 9 August 1850).
In 1855, Caroline married Aaron L. Cook (Kern 1938; Warren County Marriages). He was born 1820 in New Jersey and died 1903. By 1860, they owned a farm in Hardwick Township, where they lived with their two young daughters Mary and Ann. The 1860 census gives the value of their real estate as $1,600 and that of their personal estate as $600. They were listed on the census adjacent to Caroline's parents (1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 551B, 13 July 1860, post office Hardwick). The occupants of the Cook household in 1860 were as follows:

The Cooks were still residents of Hardwick Township in 1870. Twin sons had been born in about 1866, who were named Marcus and Milton. Their daughters were both in school. The value of their real estate had increased to $3,000 and they held a personal estate valued at $800. Caroline's brother Isaac R. Konkel lived near the Cooks (1870 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 148 A-B, 2 August 1870, post office Columbia). Table 2 summarizes the Cook household in 1870.

By 1880, Mary Cook was no longer living with her parents. The Cook household included Aaron and Caroline, their daughter Annie and the twins. Annie was finished with school, but both Milton and Marcus were students. The family still resided on their farm in Hardwick Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 388C, 3 June 1880). The members of the 1880 Cook household are presented in table 3:

CHILDREN OF MARY CAROLINE KONKLE AND AARON COOK:
3004. (i.) MARY E. COOK5, was born circa 1857 in New Jersey. She appears on the 1860 and 1870 census as a resident of her parents's household in Hardwick Township. In 1870, she attended school (1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 551B, 13 July 1860, post office Hardwick; 1870 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 148 A-B, 2 August 1870, post office Columbia). She was no longer a resident of her parent's household in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 388C, 3 June 1880).
3005. (ii.) ANNA E. "Annie" COOK5, was born August 1859 in New Jersey and died 1945 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 175, Stillwater Village, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 14 June 1900; Stillwater Cemetery). She appears on the 1860 census as a 1 year old child living with her parents in Hardwick Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 551B, 13 July 1860, post office Hardwick). She was also a resident of their household in 1870 and 1880. She attended school in 1870, but was a young lady of 20 and out of school in 1880 (1870 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 148 A-B, 2 August 1870, post office Columbia; 1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 388C, 3 June 1880). Anna married circa 1890, Charles H.M. Angle. He was born May 1838 in New Jersey and died 1913. In 1900, Charles and Anna lived in the village of Stillwater. They had been married ten years and did not have children. Charles was an insurance saleman, Anna was a dressmaker. They lived in a rented home in the village (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 175, Stillwater Village, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 14 June 1900). By 1910, Charles and Anna had rented a farm on the road betweetn Stillwater and Mt Pleasant. Charles was now a lawyer and was employed as a legal advisor. Anna was no longer working as a dressmaker. The couple had been married for 20 years (a first marriage for both) and they did not have children (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 25 April 1910). Charles died in 1913 and was buried in the Stillwater Cemetery on the south edge of the village of Stillwater in Sussex County, New Jersey. By 1930, Anna lived with her brother Milton in Stillwater Township. Anna was listed as head of household. She was 71 years old and was not employed. Milton was also unemployed. The siblings were renting their home for $10 per month (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-26, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 1A, 2 April 1930). Anna died in 1945 and was buried with Charles in Stillwater Cemetery. Their grave stones were field checked 14 April 2005. They are inscribed:
C.H.M. ANGLE | ANNA E. COOK |
3006. (iii.) MARCUS A. "Mark" COOK5, and his twin Milton were born circa 1867 in New Jersey and died after 1930. The twins appear on the 1870 census as 3 year old boys living with their parents in Hardwick Township. They were still with their parents in 1880 and were attending school. Marcus is listed first on the 1870 census, while Milton is listed first in the 1880 census (1870 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 148 A-B, 2 August 1870, post office Columbia; 1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 197, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 388C, 3 June 1880). Marcus married circa 1895, Emma L. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1877 in Missouri and died 9 September 1945 in Montana, age 68 (Montana Death Index, 1907-1954, number Ri 1894). Marcus worked as a station agent for the railroad and the family moved frequently. They lived in Kansas when their daughter was born (circa 1896) and were in Illinois when their son was born (circa 1903). When the 1910 census was taken, they lived in a rented home in the town of Geneva, Iowa. According to the census, the couple had two children, both of whom were living at the time of the census (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 100, Town of Geneva, Geneva Township, Franklin County, Iowa, 30 April 1910, sheet 8B). By 1920, the family had relocated to Roosevelt County, Montana. They rented a home on Madison Street in the town of Mondak, Montana. Both of their children lived with them. although their daughter was married by 1920 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 193, School District 10, Roosevelt County, Montana, 27 February 1920, sheet 10A). By 1930, Mark (as given on the census) and Emma had moved to the village of Cartwright in McKenzie County, North Dakota. Mark was still employed as a depot or station agent by the railroad. Neither of the Cook children lived with their parents in 1930. Mark and Emma rented their home for $10 a month. They owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 27-35, Cartwright Village, Sioux Township, McKenzie County, North Dakota, sheet 3A, 8 April 1930). Children of Marcus and Emma Cook:
3014. (i.) FLOY M.COOK6, was born 31 December 1896 in Leavenworth County, Kansas (Leavenworth County, Kansas Birth Index, page 392, card 2534. No first name is given, sex is female.) and died unknown. In 1910, she lived with her parents and brother in Geneva, Iowa and attended school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 100, Town of Geneva, Geneva Township, Franklin County, Iowa, 30 April 1910, sheet 8B). She married between 1918 and 1920, Ortie Arthur Tittsworth, the son of James Martin Tittsworth and Hannah Nunn. He was born 24 March 1884 in Baysville, DeKalb County, Missouri and died 26 May 1961 in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. Birge-MacNeil (2004) gives his name as Isaac Arthur Tittsworth, but his draft registration, with his signature, is under the name of Ortie Arthur Titsworth (WW I draft registration). Death records for his son Sydney V. Titsworth give the father's names as Ortha Tittsworth (Montana Death Records). Although Floy was married in 1920, she was still listed as a resident of her parents home. Ortie was not listed as a member of the Cook household. Floy was employed as a clerk by the railroad (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 193, School District 10, Roosevelt County, Montana, 27 February 1920, sheet 10A). Ortie was a brakeman for the Great Northern Railroad in September 1918 when he registered for the draft. It is assumed that he still worked for the railroad in 1920. In 1918, he was based out of Wolf Point, Sheridan County, Montana. He probably met Floy through his job with the railroad. When he registered for the draft he was probably single as he did not name a wife as his nearest relative. Instead, he named Mrs. Daisy Hollingsworth of Agency, DeKalb County, Missouri as his closest relative (WW I draft registration). Daisy was his younger sister (Birge-MacNeil 2004). Ortie's draft registration describes him as tall and of medium build. He had brown eyes and dark hair. He was 34 years old when he registered for the draft (WW I draft registration). He and Floy were probably married sometime between 1918 and 1920. The marriage did not last very long. Whether Floy died, or the couple divorced is unclear. However, Ortie married his second wife, Katrina Sjurdotter Sponheim in about 1922. She was born 25 April 1884 in Norway and died 10 January 1971 in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington (Social Security Death Index; Washington State Death Index). Katrina arrived in the United States in 1911. By 1930 the couple had three children: Sydney V. (born about 1923, died 15 August 1997, age 74 in Custer County, Montana); Donald (born about 1925), and Elaine (born about 1928). The family lived at 321 West 4th Street in Williston, Williams County, North Dakota in 1930. They owned their home, which was valued at $1,500. Ortie was a conductor working for the steam railroad in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 53-65, 3rd Ward, Williston City, Williams County, North Dakota, 8 April 1930, sheet 6B; Montana Death Index).
3015. (ii.) CHARLES A. COOK6, was born 1 January 1905 in Illinois and died 29 December 1996, in ths city of Spokane, Spokane County, Washington (Social Security Death Index; Washington State Death Index, certificate number 041747, also gives same SSI number). In 1910, he lived with his parents and sister in Geneva, Iowa (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 100, Town of Geneva, Geneva Township, Franklin County, Iowa, 30 April 1910, sheet 8B). In 1920, he lived with his parents on Madison Street in Mondak, Montana and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 193, School District 10, Roosevelt County, Montana, 27 February 1920, sheet 10A). Charles's social security number was issued in Montana before 1951. His last residence was in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington (1996) (Social Security Death Index).
3007. (iv.) MILTON B. COOK5, and his twin Marcus were born circa 1867 in New Jersey and died after 1930. Milton married circa 1892, Unknown. In 1910, he worked and boarded in a hotel owned by Denton S. and Eva J. Goble. The hotel was located on Main Street in Sussex, Sussex County. Although the census states that he had been married for 10 years, his wife was not a resident of the hotel (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Sussex Borough, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 4A, 20 April 1910). By 1930, Milton lived with his widowed sister Anna E. Angle in Stillwater Township. Anna was listed as head of household. She was 71 years old and was not employed. Milton was also unemployed. The census does not give an occupation for him, but states that he was not working. The siblings were renting their home for $10 per month. According to the census Milton was still married, although his wife was not listed in the census as a resident of the home that he shared with his sister Anna (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-26, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 1A, 2 April 1930).
