FAMILY CONNECTIONS
JOHN MATTHEWS READ, Sr.4
BARBARA BECK3
222. JOHN MATTHEWS READ, Sr.4 (Isaac, III3, John2, Joseph1)
was born 29 January 1820 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died 12 February 1878 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The records of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown give his date of death as 11 February 1878 (Anon 1916). John married (B6.) BARBARA "BARBARY" BECK3 (Jacob Beck2, Jacob Beck1), the daughter of Jacob Beck and Mary Smith. Barbara was born 11 June 1817 in New Jersey and died 29 December 1888 in New Jersey. The Read and Beck families both owned farms in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1830 United States Federal Census, Knowlton, Warren County, New Jersey, page 386). John and Barbara probably knew each other from childhood. They were married in the early to mid-1840s. It is possible that they were married in a Methodist Episcopal Church, as both John and Barbara were members of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown. The Methodist Society was formed in Blairstown (then called Gravel Hill) in 1811 and was part of the Harmony Circuit. The minister resided in Harmony and served the Methodist classes in the neighborhood from that base. In 1862, Blairstown and Johnsonburg were organized as a single charge. The first church in Blairstown was built on land donated by John I. Blair. The deed for the land to the trustees of the church was dated 16 January 1838. The meeting house was dedicated 1 November 1838. The original church was a simple building."It was a lain stone structure, 35 X 45 feet in size, with gothic windows, two front doors opening directly into the audience room, entered from a porch 9 feet wide running across the front of the building, with steps at either end. There were galleries on the sides and rear, the rear end being reached by open stirways on either side of the pulpit" (Anon 1916).
This small church served the congregation until 1873, when it was razed and replaced with a larger frame church with steeple and belfry. The corner stone was laid on 28 July 1873. The new church (measuring 40 by 60 feet) was dedicated on 23 and 24 January 1875.
John and Barbara Read began their married life as a farm family in Blairstown Township. Their eldest son Jacob Read was born in October 1847. Jacob was probably named after his grandfather Jacob J. Beck. The Read farm appears to have been next to John's father's farm. On the 1850 census, John and Barbara lived in dwelling number 805 and were family 840. Isaac Read, III lived in dweling 804 (famiy 442). No real estate value is given in the census. It is possible that John and Barbara were living on land which belonged to Isaac Read, III. Their family in 1850 numbered three, John, Barbara and Jacob. Their son Isaac Read was born in August 1850, but he does not appear on the census c.
By 1860, John and Barbara owned real estate valued at $4,500 and a personal estate valued $1,000. Their farm was still close to John's parents's farm. John and Barbara lived in dwelling 698 (family 698) and Isaac and Catherine Read lived in dwelling 700 (family 700). John and Barbara were the parents of 5 children in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 442).
The value of the Read farm had increased to $8,000 by 1870. The family's personal estate was still valued at $1,000. All five of the Read children were living at home. Only the girls were attending school. The three boys worked as farm laborers. According to the 1870 census, Baraba Beck Read could neither read nor write. Her sons appear to have stopped attending school around the age of 14 or 15. Her 14 year old daughter, Mary Catherine was still in school. John's extended family lived in close proximity to the farm. The Reads lived in dwelling 5 (family 5), his widowed mother, Catherine Matthews Read and his unmarried brother, William Read lived in dwelling 4 (family 4) (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 12, 29 June 1870). For some odd reason the census enumerator in Blairstown Township began each new page of the census with dwelling one, family one. He did not number the houses in consecutive order throughout the township, beginning with one and running into the hundreds. However, John's brother Marshall Read is listed on the previous page of the census (page 11, 29 June 1870). Marshall's farm appears to be fairly close to John's farm.
John Read died intestate (without a will) at the rather young age of 58 in February 1878. His widow Barbara and his five surviving children divided the estate. The family farm was sold and Barbara bought land in Knowlton Township from her brother. She was living in her new house in 1880 when the census was taken. She shared the home with her daughter Sarah Ann and Sarah's husband, John Allen. The Allen's had just had their first child in January of that year, a little girl named Mary. John Allen is lised as the head of the household. He was a farmer. The Allens lived in dwelling 277 and were family number 289. Barbara's neice, Sarah Beck and her husband Abram Smith lived nearby in dwelling 273 (family 284) (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 29, 17 June 1880). Barbara died in December 1888 and was buried with John in the Hainesburg Cemetery, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The 1916 program for the celebration of the 105th anniversary of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown lists Barbara's date of death as January 1889 (annon 1916). Her tombstone gives it as 29 December 1888. It is possible that the church records give her date of burial and not her death. Given a death date of 29 December 1888, it is quite probable that she was buried during the first week of January 1889.
John Read and Barbara Beck had 5 children born betweeen 1847 and 1858. They had at least 30 grandchildren who were born between 1871 and 1912; 17 great-grandchildren born between 1894 and 1920, 27 great great-grandchildren; 44 third great-grandchildren; 28 fourth great-granchildren (the most recent birth in 1996); and 5 fifth great-granchildren. Total identified descendants equals 156 over a 150 year period (1847-1996).

Children of John M. Read and Barbara Beck
542. (i.) JACOB READ5, was born October 1847 in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died March 1926, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania (possibly in Kingston). He was buried 5 March 1926. Jacob married Mary Cevillah Harden, daughter of John Harden and Martha Wilson. She was born August 1853 in New Jersey and died March 1933 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania (possibly in Kingston). She was buried 11 March 1933. Jacob and Mary Read are buried in Section 16, Lot 26 Denison Cemetery, Forty Fort, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
543. (ii.)ISAAC F. READ5,
was born August 1850 in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1885, probably in New Jersey. Isaac was born about a month before the census taker visited the Read home in the autumn of 1850. However, because he was born after 1 June 1850, he does not appear on the census (1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 442, page 18 September 1850). He is listed on the 1860 census as an 11 year old school boy living with his parents on their farm in Blairstown Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 442). Isaac was still living at home in 1870, he worked as a farm laborer (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 12, 29 June 1870) Between 1870 and 1875, he married Alice E. Reeder, the daughter of Stephen G. and Susan Reeder of Blairstown Township. Stephen was probably the son of James and Elizabeth Reeder, who owned a farm next to Stephen's farm in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 577, 22 July 1860). Alice was born in 1857 in New Jersey and died 1896, probably in New Jersey. Isaac and Alice lived in Blairstown Township in 1880. John was a laborer. The couple had two living children, their second child, Elmer, had died shortly after he was born in 1877. The family lived near Isaac's uncle Peter and aunt Caroline (Beck) Mericle. Isaac and Alice lived in dwelling 116 and were family 123. The Mericles lived in dwelling 110 (family 116). Two dwellings away (number 118) was the home of Gershom and Fannie. They were the grandparents of Isaac's first cousin Frances Read, the daughter of his uncle Marshall Read. Frances lived with her grandparents in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 12, 9 June 1880). Isaac died when he was about 35 years old. He was buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Alice lived another 11 years. She died in 1896, at the approximate are of 39 years and was buried with Isaac in Cedar Ridge. Children of Isaac and Alice Read:1196. (ii.) ELMER J. READ6, was born 1877 and died 1877, probably in New Jersey. He is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.
1197. (iii.) MILTON READ6, was born circa 1879 in New Jersey and died unknown. He appears as a 5 year old child living with his parents in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey on the 1880 census (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 12, 9 June 1880).
544. (iii.)JOHN M. READ, Jr.5, was born August 1854 in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1925, probably in New Jersey. He first appears on the 1860 census as an 6 year old school boy living with his parents on their farm in Blairstown Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 442). John still lived at home in 1870, he was 15 years old and worked as a farm laborer. He appears to have finished with his schooling by the time of the census (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 12, 29 June 1870). He married first, between 1870 and 1875, Nancy M. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1857 in Pennsylvania (according to the 1880 census, or in New York according to the 1910 census) and died between 1879 and 1888. John and Nancy are listed on the 1880 census as rsidents of Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. John worked as a farm laborer. He and Nancy had three small children (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 28, 21 & 22 June 1880). Nancy died sometime between 1880 and 1888. John married a second time in circa 1888. His new wife was Josephine DeVore. She was born in February 1865 in Pennsylvania and died 1953, probably in New Jersey. The 1900 United States Federal Census places John and Josephine Read in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. In 1910, John and Josephine lived in Hope Township on Delaware Road. John was a farm laborer. He did not own his home, but was a renter. During 1909, he was out of work for 8 weeks. According to the census, John and Josephine had been married 19 years and were the parents of 10 children, 10 of whom were living in 1910. The census also indicates that this was John's second marriage and Josephine's first marriage (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 6B, 21 May 1910). The 1930 census gives Josephine's age at marriage as 23, which would place the marriage in about 1888. This seems more plausible than the 1891 date derived from the 1910 census, as John and Josephine had a daughter, Minnie, in August 1888. In 1930, Josephine lived in the village of Delaware in Knowlton Township. She was a widow, and supported herself as a laundress. Two of her sons, John and Walter, and a grandson, Paul A. Read (age 12), lived with her. Josephine was renting the house in Delaware, the census gives her rent as $3. The family did not own a radio (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 3A, April 7 & 8, 1930). John and Josephine are buried in Hainesburg Cemetery, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Children of John and Nancy Read:
1199. (ii.) THEODORE READ6, was born 1877, in New Jersey and died 1927. He appears as a 2 year old child living with his parents in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey on the 1880 census (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 28, 21 & 22 June 1880). He married Jane (Last Name Unknown). She was born in 1860, in Pennsylvania and died in 1944. The Reads lived on Mountain Road in Knowlton township in 1920 on rented property. The census gives Theodore's occupation as "farm operator." They did not have any of their own children living with them at the time. However, 13 year old William Silverthorn lived with them. The census lists him as their nephew. Whether he the child of one of Theodore or Jane's siblings is unknown. William Silverthorn attended school while he lived with his uncle and aunt. Theodore and Jane lived in dwelling 133 and were family 145. Theodore's first cousin once removed, Boyd S. Read5 (Isaac Fonger Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) and his family lived in dwelling 132 was family 144 (1920 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 161, sheet 5B, 10 & 12 January 1920). In 1930, Jane was a widow. She lived with her daughter Florence Read Lambert and her family in Hardwick Center, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey (1930 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-9, sheet 2A, 3 April 1930). She married John M. Allen. He was born in 1848 in New Jersey and died 1918 in New Jersey. He was probably the son of Isaac B. and Hury Allen. They are listed on the 1860 census as residents of Blairstown Township, post office Walnut Valley (1860 United States Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 570, 26 July 1860). Isaac B. Allen was a balcksmith. He had two children in 1860, John (age 13, born circa 1847) and Sarah E. (age 7, born circa 1853). 1214. (ii.) HERBERT D. ALLEN6, was born 1882 and died 1948. Herbert is buried with his parents in Hainesburg Cemetery, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. In 1910, he was living with his father near Knowlton, Knowlton Township. According to the 1910 census, Herbert was a farmer working on the farm. He was 28 years old and single (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 3 May 1910). By 1920, Herbert's father had died. Herbert was head of the household in 1920. He owned a farm free and clear of mortgages on the Knowlton State Road in Knowlton Township. Herbert's sister Rose and her husband Alfred Christian lived with him. Hebert was still single. The census gives Herbert's occupation as dairy farmer. Alfred worked on the farm with Herbert (1920 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 161, sheet 10A-B, January 28, 1920). In 1930, Herbert was still the head of the household. He was also still single. Herbert owned a farm outside of Delaware in Knowlton Township on RD1. The real estate was valued at $4000. He still shared the house with his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Alfred Christian. Alfred was listed as a "farm laborer" so he probably worked for Herbert on the farm. Herbert was 48 years old and still single in 1930. The Allens did not own a radio in 1930 (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 5A, April 11 & 12, 1930).
1215. (iii.) ROSE ALLEN6, was born 1886 and died after 1930. In 1910, Rose lived at home with her father, her two brothers and her younger sister Eva. Rose was Keeping house for her father, as her mother had died the year before (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 3 May 1910). She married in circa 1912, Alfred Christian. He was born circa 1866 in New Jersey. In 1920, Rose and Alfred lived with Rose's brother, Herbert D. Allen on a dairy farm on Knowlton State Road. Alfred worked on the farm with Herbert (1920 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 161, sheet 10A-B, January 28, 1920). Rose and Alfred still lived with Rose's brother Herbert in 1930. They resided on a farm on RD1 near Delaware in Knowlton Township. Alfred was listed in the 1930 census as a "farm laborer" and Herbert was listed as a "farmer." I,m assuming that Alfreed worked for his brother-in-law (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 5A, April 11 & 12, 1930). There were no children listed for Rose and Alfred in either the 1920 or 1930 census.
1216. (iv.) WILLIAM R. ALLEN6, was born 1889 and died unknown. In 1910, William was a farmer working on the family farm. (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 3 May 1910).
1217. (v.) EVA P. ALLEN6, was born 1893 and died unknown. In 1910, Eva lived at home with her father and older brothers and sister. She attended school during the school year (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 3 May 1910).
1218. (vi.) CHILD ALLEN6, was born and died unknown (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 7A, 3 May 1910).
