CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH ANN READ AND CHARLES C. SMITH:

547. (i.) EMMA SMITH5, was born 1 March 1849 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Latter Day Saints, hereinafter LDS, Batch #C509751) and died unknown. Her birth is recorded in the Blairstown Township birth records, but she is entered as an unnamed daughter of Charles Smith. Emma appears on the 1850 census as a one year old child living with her parents on their farm in Knowlton Township (1850 United States Federal Census, 5th District, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 536B, 22 July 1850). By 1860, the family had moved to Hope Township. Emma was 11 year old and was in school. The family lived on a rented farm in the township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). Emma was no longer a resident of her parents household in 1870. She was 21 years old that year and it is likely that she had married (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia).

842. (ii.) MARSHALL SMITH5, was born 22 June 1850 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Batch #C509861) and died unknown. He was probably named after his mother's younger brother, Marshall Read, who had just turned 12 on the first of June 1850. Marshall Smith first appears on the 1860 census. Although he was a month old when the census taker visited his parents household in 1850, he had been born after the June first census cut off date and was therefore not included on that census. According to the 1860 census, Marshall was 8 years old. He lived with his family on a rented farm in Hope township and attended school with his sisters Emma and Catherine and his younger borther Lemic (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). By 1870, Marshall was the oldest Smith child still living at home. He was 20 years old worked on his family's home farm in Blairstown Township (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia). The 1886 Weaver and Kern Warren County History and Directory lists a Marshall Smith who was a farmer in Polkville. It is currently unknown if this is the same Marshall Smith as the one of this essay.

843. (iii.) CATHERINE AMANDA SMITH5, was born 26 December 1851 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Batch #C509861) and died unknown. She was probably named after her mother's younger sister, Catherine Amanda Read, who had turned 10 in July 1851. Catherine appears on the 1860 census as an 8 year old child. She lived with her parents on a rented farm in Hope Township and attended school with her sister Emma and her brothers Marshall and Lemic (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). Catherine lived at home with her parents in 1870. The family owned a farm in Blairstown Township (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia). She was not a resident of her parents household in 1880. Catherine was 28 years old by the time that census was enumerated and it is assumed that she had married (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 288D).

3401. (iv.) ANN ISABELLA SMITH5, was born 6 December 1852 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Batch #C509861) and probably died before 1860. She is not listed as a resident of her parents household in 1860 so it is assumed that her death occurred before that date (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). Her birth is listed in both the Knowlton and Oxford Township birth records (LDS, Batch #C509871). Her parents were living in Knowlton Township in 1853 when their son Lemic was born, but were in Oxford in 1855 when their daughter Annie was born. It is possible that Charles and Eliza Ann thought they had neglected to record Ann Isabella's birth and did so later while they were living in Oxford Township.

844. (v.) LEMIC C. SMITH5, was born 22 October 1853 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 11 September 1909 (Ramseyburg Cemetery; LDS, Batch #C509861, the LDS transcript of the Knowlton Township birth records gives his birth date as 22 October, his grave stone gives it as 25 September). Lemic married Mary C. Linaberry on 28 March 1874 (LDS IGI). She was born 24 February 1854 and died 18 May 1899 (Ramseyburg Cemetery). Lemic and Mary are buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery, as are Lemic and Mary's sons Floyd and Charles and their daughter Alice. The cemetery is located in Ramseyburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their graves were visited on 15 April 2005.

845. (vi.) ELIZA ANN "Annie" SMITH5, was born 17 August 1855 in Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Batch #C509871) and died unknown. "Annie" appears on the 1860 census as a 4 year old child. She lived with her parents on a rented farm in Hope Township. She had not started to go to school at the time of the census, although four of her older siblings were in school (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). "Anna" lived at home with her parents in 1870. The family owned a farm in Blairstown Township and Anna attended the Township schools (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia). She was not a resident of her parents household in 1880. Anna was about 24 years old by the time that census was enumerated and it is assumed that she had married (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 288D).

846. (vii.) HULDA SMITH5, was born 7 January 1857 in Oxford Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 25 January 1925 (LDS, Batch #C509871; Ramseyburg Cemetery). Hulda married by 1879, George E. Hartung, the son of Jabez Hartung and Sarah M. Johnson. George was born 24 December 1855 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 June 1940. They are buried in Ramseyburg Cemetery, Ramseyburg, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their graves were visited 15 April 2005.

548. (viii.) READ R. SMITH5, was born 9 March 1860 in Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509811; his grave stone gives date of birth as 11 March 1860; the 1870 and 1880 census would indicate that his year of birth was 1862) and died 25 January 1888. Read appears on the 1860 census as a two month old infant. He lived with his parents and older siblings on a rented farm in Hope Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). By 1870, the Smith family had moved to a farm in Blairstown Township. According to the census, Read was 8 years old, but he was not in school (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia). In 1880, Read lived with his parents on their farm in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and was employed as a farm laborer on the family farm (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1919, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jesey, page 288D). He married after 1880, Harriet L. Henry, she was born 18 December 1860 and died 8 April 1890 (Burd 1916; Cedar Ridge Cemetery). Harriet was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown (Burd 1916). The 1886 Weaver and Kern Warren County History and Directory lists Read Smith as a farmer residing in Blairstown Township. Read died the year after the directory was published. Harriet died in 1890. They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their stones were field checked in July 2000. Child of Read Smith and Harriet Henry:

1219. (i.) ROSA SMITH6, was born 2 August 1884 and died 6 July 1885, aged 11 months, 4 days. She is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Her stone was field checked July 2000.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Elizabeth Ann Read was the eldest daughter and second child of the fourteen children of Isaac Read III and Catherine Matthews. Known as "Eliza Ann," she was born 6 August 1821 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Lorenz n.d.; Reuther n.d.). She was probably named after her maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Ogden Read Wintersteen. Eliza Ann appear on the 1830 census as a female child between the ages of 5 and 9 years of age. By 1 June 1830, Isaac and Catherine Read had six children: John (age 10), Eliza Ann (age 8), Caroline (age 6), Malinda (age 4), Ruzilla (age 3), and Margaret (age 1). The family lived in Knowlton Township in 1830. It is probable that they had lived there from at least the time of Eliza Ann's birth (1830 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 388).

Ten years later, when the 1840 census was enumerated, Eliza was the eldest daughter in a household which included her parents and her nine surviving siblings. Her mother had six children between 1830 and 1840: Harriet (1831), Huldah (1833), Isaac (1835), Andrew (1837), and the twins Orin and Marshall (1839). Andrew and Orin had died as infants (1840 United States Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 368). Eliza had her 19th birthday in August of 1840. By that time she was probably helping her mother with the heavy housework associated with a household of 10 children and two adults. This included preparing meals over either an open hearth or an iron stove, laundry and ironing (with heavy metal irons), candlemaking, the production of clothing and linens, house cleaning, and attending to the women's sphere of the farm: the buttery, the chickens and the kitchen and vegetable gardens.

By the time Eliza Ann married (in April 1848), she was 27 years old. Her mother had borne two additional children since the 1840 census: Catherine (1841) and William (1843). The numerous children in the household (there were 12 total) and her mother's obvious need of help may have delayed Elizabeth's marriage. Elizabeth's husband, Charles Smith of Upper Mount Bethel in Northampton Township, Pennsylvania, was the same age as her older brother John Matthews Read. John was married to Barbara Beck, whose family was originally from Upper Mount Bethel. John and Barbara were the parents of a 6 month old son when Eliza Ann married. John had probably delayed his marriage until he had the capital to suppport a family. It is possible that Charles Smith also delayed getting married until had amassed enough capital to support a family. Although they married in April 1848, their wedding was not announced in the local papers until 12 October 1848, when an announcement ran in the Warren Journal:

On the 8th of April last, by the Rev. J. Harpel, Mr. Charles Smith, of Upper Mount Bethel, Pa. to Miss Eliza Ann Reed, of Warren co.

According to the Blairstown Township birth records, Charles and Eliza Ann's daughter, Emma Smith, was born on 1 March 1849 in Blairstown Township (LDS Batch #C509751), approximately 11 months after the wedding. Charles and Eliza Ann Smith are listed on the 1850 United States Federal Census as residents of Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. It is possible that Eliza Ann did her first lying in at her parents home and that is why Emma was born in Blairstown. She and Charles may have actually lived in Knowlton Township. Charles was a farmer in Knowlton, but no real estate value was included with the family's listing. It is probable (given the family's subsequent moves around the county) that they rented the farm. They had one child listed in 1850, their daughter Emma, who was just over a year old. The Smiths's second child, Marshall, was born in Knowlton a month before the census enumerator visited their household (LDS, Batch #C509861). However, because his birth date was 22 June 1850, he missed the cut off date of June first and was not listed as residing in the household. Nine year old James Crisman was listed as a resident of the household. Whether he was helping Charles on the farm, or if he was a ward is currently unknown. James did not attend school during the 1849 through 1850 school year. According to the census, Eliza Ann Smith was unable to read or write (1850 United States Federal Census, 5th District, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 536B, 22 July 1850).

Charles and Eliza remained in Knowlton Township through at least late 1853. Four of their children were born in Knowlton Township: Marshall in June 1850, Catherine in December 1851, Ann Isabella in December 1852 and Lemic in October 1853 (LDS, Batch #C509861). The family moved to Oxford Township in Warren County after Lemic's birth in October 1853, but before their daughter Annie was born in Oxford on 17 August 1855. They lived in Oxford Township through at least early 1857. Their daughter Hulda was born there in Janaury 1857 (LDS, Batch #C509871). By 1860, the Smith family had moved to Hope Township. The 1860 census makes it clear that Charles Smith was a farm tenant. In addition to stating that that he was a tenant, no land value is included in the entry for the family. The census does indicate that they owned a personal estate valued at $600. During the interval between the 1850 and 1860 census, seven additional children had been born. The Smith's daughter Ann Isabella had probably died, as she is not on the 1860 census. The youngest Smith child had been born shortly before the 1860 census was enumerated. Read Smith was two months old in June 1860. His older siblings, Emma, Marshall, Catherine and Lemic (given as Lemuel on the census) were all in school. Read and his sisters Annie and Hulda (ages 4 and 3 respectively) were still at home. Although they were farm tenants, Charles Smith still had a hired hand. He was 15 year old Moses Tharp. None of Charles's sons were old enough yet to do the heavy farm work. Marshall was 9, Lemic was 6 and Read was an infant. Eliza Ann also had domestic help in the house, 22 year old Mariah Crutez. The household was large and included Charles and Eliza Ann, their 7 children and Mariah and Moses—a total of 11 individuals. Eliza Ann needed help with laundry, cooking and cleaning—jobs that took far longer to complete than they do today. Emma, the Smith's eldest daughter, was only 11. Although she probably had her share of household chores, she was not yet ready to take on the heavier duties associated with such a large household. The other Smith daughters were all very young: Catherine was 8, Annie was 4 and Hulda was 3 (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, 26 June 1860, post office Serepta). The residents of the Smith household in 1860 are listed in Table 2.

Eliza Ann's father Isaac Read, III died on 4 August 1865. In a series of deeds executed in 1867 between Isaac's surviving children and his widow Catherine, the family farm was transferred to Catherine Read and each of the children received their inheritance. Signers of the deeds included John and Barbara (Beck) Read; Charles and Eliza Ann (Read) Smith; Caroline (Read) Shaw, who was a widow; Baltis and Malinda (Read) Titman; Charles and Ruzilla (Read) Wintermute; Henry and Margaret (Read) Angle, who were residents of Illinois; George and Harriet (Read) Pullis; William and Hulda (Read) Luse; Isaac and Margaret (Flock) Read; Marshall and Rebecca (Parr) Read; Marshall and Catherine (Read) Beck; and William Read, who was of age, but who was unmarried (Warren County Land Records Deeds, Book 68, page 265).

It appears that Charles and Eliza Ann were able to become property owners after Isaac's death. In 1870, they owned a farm in Blairstown Township valued at $3,500 and had a personal estate valued at $1,000. Six of the Smith's children lived at home in 1870: Marshall, Catherine, "Lemich," Anna, Hulda and Read. Lemic, Anna and Hulda were in school. Marshall was employed on the farm full time. According to the census, both he and Lemic worked on the farm. Lemic, who was still in school, probably worked for his father after school and on school holidays. The youngest child, 8 year old Read, had not yet started school (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 35, 7 July 1870, post office Columbia). Table 3 lists the occupants of the Smith household in 1870.

By 1880, only one of the Smith children resided at home during the census year—20 year old Read Smith. Charles was still a farmer. The census indicates that he suffered from asthma. Read worked on the farm with his father as a farm hand. Charles and Eliza lived in dwelling number 113. Eliza's sister Harriet Read Pullis lived with her husband George and their three sons (Read, William and George) in dwelling 121. Eliza Ann and Harriet's nephew, Isaac R. Read (son of their eldest brother John) lived in dwelling 116 (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 288D-289A). The 1886 Weaver and Kern Warren County History and Directory lists Charles C. Smith as a farmer residing in Blairstown. The directory also contains listings for his three sons. Marshall was a farmer in Polkville, Lemuel was a farmer and drover in Knowlton Township, and Read was a farmer in Blairstown.

Eliza Ann and Charles were members of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown. Both of them are listed in the memorium page of the church's 105th anniversary booklet (Burd 1916). Eliza Ann Read Smith died 11 October 1897, at the age of 76 years, and was buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). By 1900, Charles was boarding with Jacob and Henrietta Creager on their farm in Blairstown Township. He was 81 years old when the census was taken. Charles's occupation is given as landlord (1900 United States Federa Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 26 June 1900). Charles died 6 April 1902 and was buried with Eliza Ann in Cedar Ridge Cemetery (Reuther n.d.).
