224. CAROLINE READ4, was born 21 or 27 August 1823 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey and died unknown. She married Job J. Shaw by 1839. He was born in circa 1816 and died unknown. An earlier version of Read Family Connections erronously placed his death between circa 1860 and 1867. Job appears on the 1860 Census (1860 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 192). But, on 1 April 1867, Caroline Shaw signed a deed dividing her late father's real estate between her mother, her siblings and herself (Warren County Land Records Liber 68, folio 265). While the spouses of all her siblings also sigend the deed, Job does not appear as a signer (at least on the transcript I have of the deed). Job J. Shaw does not appear on the 1870 United States Census as a resident of Warren County. However, he and Caroline do appear on the 1880 census a resident of Franklin Township, Warren County (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 192, Franklin Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 300C-300D).
Job J. Shaw was the son of Robert Shaw and a nephew of Andrew Shaw of Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. His siblings included John, Andrew W., George C. and Rebecca Shaw (Sussex County probate records 2162S). Job Shaw served as Overseer of the Highways in District 10 of Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey in 1848. Between 1854 and 1856 he served as a Freeholder for the Township. During the period 1858 through 1860, Job served as the Township Assessor (Snell 1881:687). Residents of the Shaw household in 1860 included Job and Caroline and four of their sons; two live-in servants, 18 year old Hester J. Konkle and 39 year old Jane Green (Jane was from Ireland and she had her 8 year old son Thomas Green with her); and two live-in farm laborers, 23 year old Jerome Wildrick and 28 year old William Baker. The Shaw's farm as located in Frelinghuysen Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 192). By 1880, Job and Caroline lived in Franklin Township. Their 23 year old son Frank lived with them. Job was listed as a retired farmer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 192, Franklin Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 300C-300D).

The census gives her occupation as "at school" and indicated that Robert and Sarah relationship to her was to "bring up" young Aggie. There is no notice of a formal adoption, so they probably functioned as foster parents (1880 United States Federal Census, Roxbury, Morris County, New Jersey, page 436B, 22 June 1880).
