READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

HARRIET READ PULLIS4

228. HARRIET READ4 (Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 7 March 1831 in Warren County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Lorenz n.d.) and died 25 October 1909 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, age 78 years (Sussex Register). She married George Pullis on 24 October 1856, in Stillwater Township, Sussex County (Sussex County Marriage Records Book AF, page 420). He was born circa 1825 in New York City and died 10 April 1892 (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 590, 31 July 1860, post office Walnut Valley; Burd 1916). George served in the Mexican War of the late 1840s. He is listed on the veteran on the 1890 Veteran's schedule of the census. A hand written note on the census states "do not count" as the goal of the 1890 veteran's schedule was to count Civil War Veterans (1890 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 42, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, June 1890).

In 1860, George and Harriet lived in Blairstown Township. They owned a farm valued at $2000 and a personal estate valued at $800. The census states that George's place of birth was New York City (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 590, 31 July 1860, post office Walnut Valley). The couple's oldest son, Isaac Read Pullis, who was known as "Read" had been born on 26 June 1860. He did not appear on the census as he was born after the 1 June 1860 cut off date for the census.

Harriet's father, Isaac Read, III died on 4 August 1865. He did not have a will. In 1867, his surviving children gathered together to partion his property. Both George and Harriet signed the 1867 deed of partition. Other signers of the deed included John M. and Barbara (Beck) Read, Charles and Elizabeth (Read) Smith, Caroline (Read) Shaw, Baltis and Malinda (Read) Titman, Charles and Ruzilla (Read) Wintermute, Henry and Margaret (Read) Angle, William and Hulda (Read) Luse, Isaac and Margaret (Flock) Read, Marshall and Rebecca (Parr) Read, Marshall and Catherine (Read) Beck and William Read (Warren County Land Records, Deeds Book 68, page 265). Two of Harriet's brothers had died without issue before their father. They were Andrew Jackson Read (died 1837) and Orin Read (died 1840).

In 1870, George and Harriet still lived on a farm in Blairstown Township. Their post office was Coumbia. The couple owned real estate valued at $3,500. Their personal estate was valued at $500. George and Harriet had three sons in 1870: Read, William and 11 month old George. The census does not list any of the boys as attending school (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 41, 15 July 1870). In 1880, George and Harriet still lived on their farm in Blairstown Township. The Pullis household included George and Harriet, their three sons and Isabelle Kirkendell. Isabell was born circa 1862 in New Jesey. Her occupation according to the census was "housework" which probably indicates that she was a live-in domestic servant in the Pullis household. Read and William worked on the farm as farm hands. Only William was in school in 1880 (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 289A, 9 June 1880).

George and Harriet's son Read married Sarah Van Scoten in 1881. William and George married in the 1890s. George Pullis, the father appears in the 1886 Warren County History and Directory as a farmer living in Walnut Valley. William Pullis also lived in Walnut Valley and was employed as a laborer, it is probable that he lived at home with his parents. Read lived in Blairstown and was employed as a cabinet maker and undertaker. The youngest Pullis son, George, was 17 years old and was not listed in the directory (Weaver and Kern 1887). In 1890, George and Harriet still lived near the village of Walnut Valley in Blairstown Township (1890 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 42, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 3, June 1890). It is not known if their sons William and George were still at home. The family attended church in the town of Blairstown. George Pullis was a member of the First Methodist Epsicopal Church of Blairstown. Harriet's name was not included as a member of the church in the 1916 booklet published for the 150th anniversary of the church (Burd 1916).

George Pullis, the father, died 10 April 1892 (ibid.). In 1900, Harriet lived alone in a rented home in Blairstown Township. She was listed on the census adjacent to the household of her sister Ruzilla Read Wintermute Teel and Ruzilla's second husband John Teel. Harriet's occupation is given as "landlord" although she did not own the house she lived in. She appears to have been renting part of the house to the family of Charles and Hattie Jones. Charles Jones was a farmer, as was Harriet's brother-in-law John Teel. The census gives Harriet's date of birth as April 1831. Kern (1938) gave her birth date as 7 March 1831. According to the census, Harriet was the mother of four children, three of whom were living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 182, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12A, lines 71 through 73, 23 June 1900). Harriet is listed as a survivor in the 1906 obituary for her older sister Malinda Read Titman (Obituary of Malinda Titman). Harriet Read Pullis died died 25 October 1909 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, age 78 years old (Sussex Register).

CHILDREN OF GEORGE PULLIS AND HARRIET READ:

2648. (i.) ISAAC "READ" PULLIS5, was born 26 June 1860 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS IGI) and died after 1930, possibly before 1939. In 1870 and 1880, he lived with his parents and younger brothers on the family farm in Blairstown Township (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 41, 15 July 1870; 1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 289A). Read married first, on 29 April 1881, Sarah Ann Van Scoten, the daughter of Charles W. Van Scoten and Margaret Ann Cressman. She was born June 1863 in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died after 1885, but before the 1900 census. The LDS IGI gives her date of death as 25 December 1900 but this is impossible as the 1900 census lists Read Pulllis as a widower. The date of enumeration was 2 June 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44, Village of Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh Township, Rensselaer County, New York, sheet 2B, lines 64 through 67, 2 June 1900). In 1886, Read lived in Blairstown and was employed as an undertaker and cabinet maker (Weaver and Kern 1996). Read lived in Balirstown until at least 1889. In that year he became a charter member of the Blairstown Hose Co. No. 1, the first volunteer fire department in the town (Anon 1939:23). However, between 1889 and 1900, Read moved his family to Rensselaer County, New York. In 1900, Read lived with his three children in a rented home in the village of Lansingburgh in Rensselaer County. Read was employed as an undertaker. His eldest daughter, 17 year old Daisy, was probably keeping house for her father and the two younger children, Lillian and Floyd, who were in school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44, Village of Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh Township, Rensselaer County, New York, sheet 2B, lines 64 through 67, 2 June 1900). Read married again in about 1901. His second wife was Mary R. or "Minnie" (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1870 in New York. Read returned to Blairstown after the birth of his daughter Thelma in 1902. THe Rensselaer County, New York Genweb site includes a list of burials in the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York that were done by Read Pullis during the years 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902 and 1903. The 1910 census lists Read and Minnie Pullis as residents of Main Street in Blairstown. They had been married for nine years and had one child, their daughter Thelma. None of Read's children by his first marriage lived with the couple. Read was a merchant in 1910, he ran a general store (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 10B, lines 71 through 73, 29 April 1910). By 1920, Read was the proprietor of an undertaking establishment. He and Minnie resided on East Avenue in Blairstown. They owned their home free and clear. Their 18 year old daughter Thelma also resided with them (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, lines 96 through 98, 22 January 1920). The 1929 directory of Warren County lists Read Pullis, undertaker and Mrs. Read Pullis, housewife as residents of Blairstown, but does not give a street address. Read's son Floyd was not listed in the directory (Shampanore 1929:6p). The 1930 census indicates that they still lived on on East Street. Their home was valued at $7000. The family owned a radio. Read and Minnie were the only occupants of the household, Thelma no longer lived in the household. The census lists Read as the proprietor of and undertaking establishment (United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet no. 1A, 2 April 1930). Read may have died by 1939. He is not included as living in the list of surviving charter members of Blairstown Hose Co. No. 1 (Anon 1939:23). Children of Read Pullis by his first wife:

. (i.) DAISY PULLIS6, was born 24 August 1882 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown (LDS IGI). Her father moved the family to the village of Lansingburgh, in Rensselaer County, New York, sometime after 1889. Daisy's mother died between 1885 and 1900. In 1900, she lived with her father and younger sister and brother in Lainsingburgh. She was not in school, nor was she employed. It is probable that she was keeping house for the family (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44, Village of Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh Township, Rensselaer County, New York, sheet 2B, lines 64 through 67, 2 June 1900).

. (ii.) LILLIAN A. PULLIS6, was born 30 January 1884 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown (LDS IGI). Her father moved the family to the village of Lansingburgh, in Rensselaer County, New York, sometime after 1889. In 1900, she lived with her widowed father, sister and brother in Lainsingburgh. According to the census, Lillian, who was 16, had attended school for 9 months during the census year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44, Village of Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh Township, Rensselaer County, New York, sheet 2B, lines 64 through 67, 2 June 1900).

. (iii.) FLOYD A. PULLIS6, was born 19 November 1885 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown (LDS IGI). His moved the family to the village of Lansingburgh, in Rensselaer County, New York, sometime after 1889. In 1900, Floyd lived with his widowed father, and sisters Lainsingburgh. According to the census, Floyd, who was 14, had attended school for 8 months during the census year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 44, Village of Lansingburgh, Lansingburgh Township, Rensselaer County, New York, sheet 2B, lines 64 through 67, 2 June 1900). By 1910, Floyd was 25 years old. He had moved to Chicago, Illinois and lived in room 131 in the Reliance Hotel. He made his living as a street or car merchant. The census gives his surname as "Pollis" (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Tract A101, Ward 1, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, sheet 12A, line 11, 20 April 1910).

Child of Read and Minnie Pullis:

2650. (iv.) THELMA D. PULLIS6, was born circa 1902 in New York and died unknown. In 1910, she lived with her parents on Main Street in the town of Blairstown (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 10B, lines 71 through 73, 29 April 1910). By 1920, Read and Minnie Pullis had moved to East Street in Blairstown. Thelma lived with her parents. She was 18 years old, single and unemployed (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 12B, lines 96 through 98, 22 January 1920).

847. (ii.) WILLIAM M. PULLIS5, was born 20 October 1862, in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS, Batch #C509751) and died 1912 (Reuther n.d). In 1870 and 1880, William lived with his parents in Blairstown Township. William worked for his father as a farm hand in 1880. He was also the only Pullis child still in school during the 1880 census year (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 41, 15 July 1870; 1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 289A). In 1886, William lived in Walnut Valley and was employed as a laborer (Weaver and Kern 1996). He was 24 years old and single. It is probable that he still lived with his parents when he wasn't boarding with the family who employed him. William married circa 1892, Julia (Last Name Unknown). She was born August 1875 in New Jersey and died unknown. The couple moved across the Delaware River to Northampton County, Pennsylvania by 1895. Their son Clyde was born in Pennsylvania in January of that year. By 1900, William, Julia and Clyde lived in rented house on Company Row in Pen Argyl in Northampton County, where William was employed as an undertaker (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 141, Ward 1, Pen Argyl Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5A, lines 38 through 40, 13 June 1900). In 1910, William and Julia lived on Main Street in Pen Argyl, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. William was still employed as an undertaker. While he owned his business, he and Julia were renting their home. They had one child, their son Clyde (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 110, Ward 1, Pen Argyl Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 13A, lines 29 through 31, 20-21 April 1910). William died two years after the census was taken and was buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). Julia remarried by 1920. Her second husband was Frank Lobb. Frank was born in England circa 1863. He arrived in the United States in 1882 and was naturalized in 1888. In 1920, Frank and Julia Lobb and Clyde Pullis lived on Main Street west of Broad Avenue in Pen Argyl. The house was owned by Frank and Julia. Frank worked at the slate mill in the slate quarry. Clyde had taken over his father's business and worked as a funeral director (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Ward 1, Pen Argyl Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, lines 5 through 7, 13 January 1920). By 1930, Julia and Frank lived at 124 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pen Argyl. They owned their home which was valued at $12,000. They also owned a radio. Julia's son, Clyde Pullis lived next door with hs wife Beatrice at 126 Pennsylvania Avenue. Frank was still employed at the slate quarry. He was a supervisor for the company (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-84, Ward 2, Pen Argyl Borough, Plainsfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 2B, lines 85 through 87, 2 April 1930). Child of William and Julia Pullis:

. (i.) CLYDE ARTHUR PULLIS6, was born January 1895 in Pennsylvania, possibly in Pen Argyl, Northampton County and died unknown. He first appears on the United States census in 1900 as a five year old child who had not yet started school. He lived with his parents on Company Row in Pen Argyl in Northampton County (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 141, Ward 1, Pen Argyl Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 5A, lines 38 through 40, 13 June 1900). Clyde still lived in Pen Argyl with his parents in 1910. He attended school during the census year (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 110, Ward 1, Pen Argyl Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 13A, lines 29 through 31, 20-21 April 1910). Clyde's father died in 1912 and his mother remarried by 1920. In 1920, Clyde (whose name is given as Arthur Pullis in th ecensus) lived with his step-father Frank Lobb and his mother on Main Street in Pen Argyl. He was 25 years old and had taken over his father's funeral business (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 153, Ward 1, Pen Argyl Borough, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 9A, lines 5 through 7, 13 January 1920). Clyde married circa 1924, Beatrice M. Swoyer. She was born circa 1898 in Pennsylvania. In 1930, Clyde and Beatrice lived at 126 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pen Argyl. Clyde's mother and step-father, Julia and Frank Lobb, lived next door at 124 Pennylvanis Avenue. clyde and Beatrice shared their home with Beatrice's brother, 20 year old Vernon C. Swoyer. Clyde and Beatrice did not own their home; they paid $35 a month in rent. They also owned a radio. Clyde was a funeral director and Vernon was his associate director. Clyde and Beatrice did not have children in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 48-84, Ward 2, Pen Argyl Borough, Plainsfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, sheet 2B, lines 85 through 87, 2 April 1930). The Pullis funeral home was was located at 126 Pennsylvania Avenue in 1942, when the funeral of Addison Ross was conducted from the establishment. Ross was a slate quarry worker who was killed in an accident at the quarry (Bangor Daily News, 1 September 1942). Perhaps the most famous funeral that Clyde Pullis oversaw from his establishment was that of actress Jane Mansfield, who grew up in Pen Argyl. She was buried on 3 July 1967 after a brief private service at the Pullis Funeral Home (Times News, 3 July 2002). The funeral home at 126 Pennsylvania Avenue in Pen Argyl is currently occupied by the Guerro & Ruggiero Funeral home (2005).

2649. (iii.) GEORGE E. PULLIS5, was born July 1869 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died unknown. He appears on the 1870 census as an eleven month old baby, his birth month is given as July (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 41, 15 July 1870). In 1880, he lived with his parents in Blairstown Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 289A). George married on 19 April 1894, in Manhattan, New York County, New York Joanna Le Hane, daughter of Denis Le Hane and Ella Ready. She was born in New York City (LDS Batch# M005717) circa 1872. In 1880 she lived at 136 94th Street in New York City with her widowed father Denis Lahn, her borther Timothy and sister Ellen. Dennis Lehan was a native of Ireland and was employed as a grocer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 623, New York, New York County, New New York, page 223C, 2 June 1880). George appears to have left Warren County. I currently am unsure of where he settled. One George Pullis appears on the 1920 census. This man was a boarder in the rented home of Carrie Bennett. Her home was located at 25 South Water Street in the 2nd Ward of the city of Newburgh, Orange County, New York. Carrie Bennett may have given the census enumerater the information about George, as it was rather scanty in the census. What the census knew about him boiled down to age 53 (born about 1867), married (but his wife was not with him), able to read and write, employed as a carpenter in the shipyard. His place of birth and that of his parents was not known. Whether this was the same George Pullis as the son of George and Harriet (Read) Pullis is unknown (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 141, 2nd Ward of the city of Newburgh, Orange County, New York, sheet 1A, lines 31 through 32, 2 January 1920).
