GRACE AZUBAH READ WINTON5

2301. GRACE AZUBAH READ5 (Jonah Read4, Richard Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born November 1883 in Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio and died 1917, possibly in Colorado or Oklahoma. In 1900, she lived with her parents on their farm in Jackson Township (1900 United States Federal Census, enumeration district 110, Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio, sheet 6B). She married in about 1906, probably in Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas, Cortis Robert Winton, the son of James Lloyd Winton and Adelia Connor. Cortis was born 4 November 1886 in Crawford County, Pennsylvania and died 11 September 1959 in Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma. His parents moved to Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas in 1890 when he was a small boy. He appears to be the only one of Lloyd and Adelia Winton's children who was born in Pennsylvania. Their other five children (Lila, Nathaniel, Judson, Dewey and Ida) were all born in Syracuse (McAllister n.d.). Cortis and Grace made their home in Syracuse after their marriage. Their first child, Alvin, was born there in 1907. They were still living in Syracuse, Kansas in 1910 when the census was taken. The Winton household in 1910 consisted on Cortis and Grace, their son Alvin, and Grace's father Jonah Read and brother Arthur Read. Cortis was employed as a pumper by the railroad (1910 United States Federal Census, Syracuse Township, Hamilton County, Kansas, sheet 6A). He probably worked for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad (AT&SF), which ran through Syracuse, Kansas. The Wintons were still in Syracuse on 2 July 1910, when their son Harry was born. On the 17th of July the family moved to LaJunta, Ortero County, Colorado. They appear in the 1911 and 1914 City directories for La Junta. Cortis worked as a fireman for the AT&SF in 1914. The Winton family lived at 414 Smithland Ave. Grace's father Jonah still lived with them. Grace died in 1917 in either Colorado or Oklahoma. It is not known where she is buried. De Bond, who does volunteer look-ups for the Otero County GenWeb site, was unable to find her in any of the county cemeteries. Nor does she appear in the burial list for Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater, Payne County Oklahoma, where Cortis Winton is buried.

Neither Cortis Winton nor Jonah Read appear in the 1919 city directory for LaJunta. By 1919, Robert Winton had married his second wife, Minnie J. White, who was born in Oklahoma on 28 February 1889. In 1920, Robert and Minnie Winton were renting a house at 729 East Oak Street in Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma. Robert was employed as a locomotive engineer. Robert's two sons by Grace were not living with the couple, nor were they living with their grandfather Jonah Read, or their uncle Arthur Read (1920 United States Federal Census, Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma, enumeration district 199, sheet 17A, 14 January 1920). By 1930, Alvin and Harry Winton were living with their father and stepmother in Cushing, Oklahoma. Robert and Minnie had bought a house located at 412 West 5th Street. Robert was still employed as a locomotive engineer (1930 United States Federal Census, Cushing, Ward 3, Payne County, Oklahoma, enumeration district 60-9, sheet 3B, 3 April 1930). Minnie White Winton died 23 June 1950. Funeral arrangements were handled by Strode Funeral Home. She was buried in Fairlawn Cemetery (Block 5, lot or row 50, space 2), in Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma. Cortis married as his third wife, in about 1952, Gussie O'Neal, who was born 18 February 1896. They were married about seven years when Cortis 11 September 1959 in Cushing. He was buried next to Minnie in Fairlawn Cemetery (Block 5, lot or row 50, space 1).

CHILDREN OF GRACE AZUBAH READ AND CORTIS ROBERT WINTON:

2307. (i.) ALVIN RICHARD WINTON6, was born 27 September 1907 in Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas and died 1 October 1982. Alvin appears on the 1910 census as a resident of his parents household in Syracuse (1910 United States Federal Census, Syracuse Township, Hamilton County, Kansas, sheet 6A). Alvin was joinned by a baby brother, Harry Winton, on 2 July 1910. Fifteen days later the family moved to LaJunta, Orteo County, Colorado and resided at 414 Smithland Ave (1911 and 1914 City Directory, La Junta, Colorado). Alvin's mother Grace Read Winton died in 1917 and his father remarried in 1919. Alvin's new stepmother was Minnie J. White. In 1920, Cortis and Minnie Winton were living in Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma. Neither Alvin nor his brother Harry were living with them. Nor were Alvin and Harry residing with their grandfather Jonah Read or uncle Arthur Read who lived in Irondale Township, Adams County, Colorado (1920 United States Federal Census, Irondale Township, Precinct 11, Adams County, Colorado, enumeration district 8, sheet 1B, 2 January 1920; Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma, enumeration district 199, sheet 17A, 14 January 1920). By 1930, Alvin lived with his father, stepmother and brother in Cushing, Oklahoma. Alvin was single in 1930, and unemployed (1930 United States Federal Census, Cushing, Ward 3, Payne County, Oklahoma, enumeration district 60-9, sheet 3B, 3 April 1930). Alvin died 1 October 1982 and was buried on 4 October in Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater, Payne County, Oklahoma (Block 5, lot or row 50, space 3). He was buried with his father and stepmother. Strode Funeral Home handled the arrangements, as they also had for both Cortis and Minnie.

2308. (ii.) HARRY NATHAN WINTON6, was born 2 July 1910 in Syracuse, Hamilton County, Kansas and 22 September 2002 in Norman Cleveland County, Oklahoma. Fifteen days after Harry was born, his family moved to LaJunta, Orteo County, Colorado and resided at 414 Smithland Ave (1911 and 1914 City Directory, La Junta, Colorado). Harry's mother Grace Read Winton died in 1917 and his father remarried in 1919. Harry's new step-mother was Minnie J. White. In 1920, Cortis and Minnie Winton were living in Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma. Neither Harry nor his brother Alvin were living with them. Nor were they residing with their grandfather Jonah Read or uncle Arthur Read who lived in Irondale Township, Adams County, Colorado (1920 United States Federal Census, Irondale Township, Precinct 11, Adams County, Colorado, enumeration district 8, sheet 1B, 2 January 1920; Cushing, Payne County, Oklahoma, enumeration district 199, sheet 17A, 14 January 1920). By 1930, Harry lived with his father and stepmother in Cushing, Oklahoma. Harry was single in 1930, and worked as a saleman in a grocery store (1930 United States Federal Census, Cushing, Ward 3, Payne County, Oklahoma, enumeration district 60-9, sheet 3B, 3 April 1930). He married Gala J. Patterson as his first wife in circa 1932. She was born 24 March 1912 and died about a year after they were married on 2 October 1933 in Cushing, Oklahoma. Harry married again, on 4 December 1934, Ruby Anna White in Norman, Cleveland County, Oaklahoma. She was born 16 February 1912 in Fort Graham, Texas and died 29 March 2002 in Norman, Oklahoma. The couple owned Winton's Grocery in Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas between 1947 and 1987. Harry and Ruby are buried together in Washington Cemetery in McClain County, Oklahoma (McAllister n.d.). An obituray for Harry was printed in the Arkansas City Traveler, which is printed in Arkansas City, Kansas, on 24 September 2002. The paper announced that the funeral was scheduled for "Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the First Christian Church in Norman with Rev. David Spain officiating." In addition, "A memorial has been established for the First Christian Church of Norman or Central Christian Church of Arkansas City." Funeral arrangements were handled by the Primrose Funeral Home of Norman Oklahoma. Harry, the nephew of a Methodist minister and grandson of the trustee of a Methodist Episcopal church, had come full circle back to the denomination of his great-great-grandparents, Isaac Read, Sr. and Mary Shackleton.

Finally, Harry Winton, the grandson of Jonah Read, died in 2002, 166 years after the birth of his grandfather in 1836. Their lives over lapped for approximately 16 years. I have been told in history courses that there is an average of three generations per every hundred years. The life span of Jonah, his children and grandchildren stretched over one and two-thirds centuries of American history. A truely remarkable achievement.
