ISAAC FONGER READ4
230. ISSAC FONGER READ4 (Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 1 November 1835 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 2 June 1922 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He married Margaret Ann Flock, the daughter of Mathias Flack and Christina Divers. She was born 13 December 1841 and died 10 May 1921 (Dobson n.d.). When her father died, Margaret was a minor. After her marrriage to Isaac, she was still legally considered a minor because she was 19. Isaac was appointed her legal guardian by the Warren county Orphans Court and placed in charge or her share of her father's estate (Warren County New Jersey Surrogate Court Records, Letters of Administration and Guardianship Liber 2, folio 180).
The 1860 United States Federal Census (page 74) lists Isaac and Margaret as residents of the Town of Belvidere in Warren County, New Jersey. Isaac was a farm laborer. They owned real estate valued at $1000 and a personal estate valued at $800. Their first child, a daughter, had been born in March of that year, but the baby had died soon after birth. The household on the census consisted only of Isaac and Margaret. By the 1870s, Isaac owned a distillery in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. He produced Apple Jack, a hard cider (Weaver and Kern 1887). The distillery closed in 1919 when Prohibition went into effect. The family evidently continued to make apple cider in the old distillery after alcohol was outlawed. Isaac and Margaret are listed on the 1870 and 1880 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey as residents of Blairstown Township. The 1880 census places them in the village of Jacksonburg (1870:29; 1880:24). Isaac served as a Freeholder for Blairstown Township during 1872 and 1873. Isaac and Margaret are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

568. (i.) UNNAMED INFANT DAUGHTER READ5, was born 9 March 1860 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died 9 March 1860 in Blairstown Township. She is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township. Her grave stone was field checked on 3 July 1999.
569. (ii.) JOHN A. READ5, was born 18 July 1861in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died 8 February 1940. He married May Titman, possibly the daughter of Dewitt C. Titman and Elmira Kirkhuff of Blairstown. she was born in 1873 and died in 1927. They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonbug, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their grave stones were field checked 3 July 1999.
570. (iii.) ADREANN C. "ADDIE" READ5, was born 1 September 1862 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died 27 November 1864, aged 2 years, 2 months, and 27 days. She is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Her grave stone was field checked 3 July 1999.
571. (iv.) SUSAN I. "SUE" READ5, was born 19 March 1865 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died 7 February 1934 in New Milford, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania (Blairstown Press, 5 February 1934). She married at her parent's home in Jacksonburg, on 12 August 1889, Frank T. Austin (Blairstown Press, 19 June 1889).
572. (v.) KATE ALVESTA READ5, was born circa 1868 in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died probably between February 1934 and July 1934. She married circa 1898, Frank L. Jones. Kate was listed as a survivor in the February 1934 obituary of her sister Sue. In February 1934 she resided in Montclair, Essex County, New Jersey. She was not listed as a survivor in the July 1934 obituary of her brother Harry Read (Blairstown Press, 5 February 1934, 12 July 1934).
573. (vi.) WILLIE C. READ5, was born 16 October 1869 (based on his grave stone) and died 8 November 1869, aged 22 days. He is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. His grave stone was field checked 3 July 1999.
574. (vii.) ANDREW O. READ5, was born 26 October 1870 in Jacksonburg, Blairtstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 10 November 1954, Los Angeles County, California (California Death Index). He married circa 1913, Jennie M. (Last Name Unknown). Jennie was born circa 1872 in New Jersey. In 1920, Andrew and Jennie lived in a rented home in the Concord Precinct, Clakamas County, Oregon. Andrew was employed as a farm laborber (1920 United States Federal Census, Concord Precinct, Clackamas, Oregon, Enumeration District 32, sheet number 4A, 8 January 1920). Andrew's second wife was Edith E. (Last Name Unknown). They were married sometime between 1920 and 1930. Edith was born circa 1880 in Staffordshire, England and came to the United States in 1910. She married her first husband in England when she was 25 years old (about 1904). In 1930, Andrew and Edith lived in Antelope Township, Los Angeles County, California. Andrew was a poultry and grain rancher. Eidth was not a naturalized citizen in 1930. The couple owned their ranch. They also owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-802, Antrlope Township, Los Angeles County, California, sheet 1B, 4 April 1930). The February 1934 obituary of Andrew's sister Sue gave his residence as California (Blairstown Press, 5 February 1934).
575. (viii.) HARRY H. READ5, was born 1873 and died 10 July 1934 (Blairstown Press, 12 July 1934). He married Julia A. Bird, the daughter of James and Mary Bird. She was born 1878 and died 1951. They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Cedar Ridge Cemetery).
576. (ix.) EMMA AUGUSTA READ5, was born 15 September 1875 and died January 1972 (Social Security Death Index). She married 21 February 1899, at her parents home in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Elmer William Breed. They are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Brooklyn Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
577. (x.) CLARK EDWARD READ5, was born October 1879 and died 1960. He married Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of Catherine Hughes. Elizabeth was born 1882 and died 1956. They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.
578. (xi.) BOYD S. READ5, was born December 1881 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1972. He married Amelia N. "Millie" Brands. She was born 1880 and died 1967. They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

2058. (i.) CAROLINE M. READ6, was born circa 1907 in New Jersey and died after 1962. In 1920 Caroline, lived at home and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5B, 10 & 12 January 1920). By 1930, she was still living at home with her parents, but she was working as a teacher in the public school system (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 10A, April 21, 1930). Married (First name unknown) Miller, resided in Richmond, Pennsylvania about 1962 (Smith 1962).
2059. (ii.) RUTH A. READ6, was born 17 July 1909 in New Jersey and died 3 July 1998 probaly in New Jersey. In 1920, Ruth lived at home and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, E (Social Security Death Index) numeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5B, 10 & 12 January 1920). She married in circa 1929, (First Name Unknown) Roof. In 1930, Ruth was living with her parents, her husband was not a resident of the household. Like her sister Caroline, Ruth was a teacher in the public school system (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 10A, April 21, 1930). Ruth resided in Hainesburg circa 1962 (Smith 1962). Her last known residence was Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Social Security Death Index). Daughter of Ruth Read Roof:

2060. (iii.) WILLIAM "CLINE" READ6, was born 1911 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1920, he was listed as "Cline W." He lived at home and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5B, 10 & 12 January 1920). In 1930, the census listed him as "William C." He was still single and lived at home with his parents. He worked as a farm laborer (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 10A, April 21, 1930). Cline married after 1954, Mildred Lantz the widow of his second cousin, Kenneth Beck6 (Frank Beck5, Catherine Read Beck4, Isaac Read III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1). He and Mildred did not have chldren, but Mildred had three surviving children from her marriage to Kenneth Beck. They were Donald, Randall and Rodney Beck (Beck 2004). Cline's address circa 1962 was Blairstown R.D. (Smith 1962).
2061. (iv.) CATHERINE A. READ6, was born 9 June 1912 in New Jersey and died 12 April 1997 in Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Her Social Security number was issued in Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). In 1920, Catherine lived at home and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5B, 10 & 12 January 1920). She was still living at home in 1930. The census indicated that she was not attending school and that she was not employed (1930 Federal Census, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, enumeration district 21-13, sheet 10A, April 21, 1930). She married after 1930, Walter L. Harbourt, he was born 18 June 1911 and died 18 April 1990. His Social Security number was issued in New Jersey, while Catherine's was issued in Pennsylvania before 1951 (Social Security Death Index). Catherine lived in Hainesburg circa 1962 (Smith 1962), her last known residence was Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Social Security Death Index). They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

579. WILLIAM FLOCK READ5, was born 18 December 1884 and died 26 March 1970. He married 15 September 1914, Levina VanKirk, the daughter of George and Mary Van Kirk. She was born 3 March 1889 and died 17 March 1968. In 1910, Levina lived with her parents on the Mountain Road in Blairstown. George Van Kirk was a farmer. The family did not own their farm, but were renting it. Levina was a teacher (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 15A, Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 15A, 6 May 1910). She taught for awhile at the school in the Yards Creek basin (Smith 1962). After her marriage to Flock she probably had to give up teaching. "Mrs. Flock Read" was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown in 1916 (Burd 1916). Levina was one of the three editors of The Flocks: Ancestry, Genealogy, and History of nine generations of Flocks in the U.S.A. and Canada. Another editor was her sister-in-law, Emma Read Breed, sister of Flock Read. The book was published in 1938 by the Hackettstown Gazette Publishing Company. In 1962, Flock and Levina lived in Jacksonburg, Balristown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Smith 1962). They are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Randy Read, personal communication, 4 October 2002).

Children of W. Flock Read and Levina Van Kirk
2062. (i.) ELIZABETH WINONA READ6, was born 7 November 1915. She never married. She resided in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey with her sister Helen in the later years of her life in the house that had belonged to Isaac Fonger Read and Margaret Ann Flock. There is a stone for her in Cedar Ridge Cemetery in Jacksonburg (Randy Read, personal communication, 4 October 2002).
2224. (ii.) HELEN DORIS READ6, was born 6 December 1918. She married on 15 September 1939, David "Robert" Gladd. Her wedding day was her parents's twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. She resided in Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey with her sister Elizabeth in the later years of her life in the house that had belonged to her grandparents, Isaac Fonger Read and Margaret Ann Flock (Randy Read, personal communication, 4 October 2002).
