READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

MARSHALL READ4

232. MARSHALL READ4 (Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 1 June 1838 in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died after 1906 but before 1910. He married first, Rebecca Parr, the daughter of Gershom (Sr.) and Fannie Parr. In 1867, Marshall and Rebecca signed a deed of partition for the land of his late father (Warren County Land Records, Deeds Book 68, page 265). Rebecca gave birth to the couple's third daughter in about 1868. She died 4 May 1870 at the age of 25 years, 3 months and 11 days, and was buried in the cemetery on the grounds of the Blair Academy in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Marshall appears as a widower on the 1870 census. He resided in Blairstown Township with his three daughters—Frances, Jenny and Catherine—in Blairstown Township. He shared his home with his widowed sister Caroline Shaw and her son Arn and daughter Catherine. Marshall was employed as a laborer. He owned real estate valued at $2,000 and a personal estate valued at $200 (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 30A, 7 July 1870).

Marshall married within the next year, Lucy Titman. She was probably Lucy Jane Titman, the daughter of Elias Titman and Phebe Harris. Lucy Jane was born circa 1842, she was 27 years old and single in 1870. The census indicates that she lived at home with her mother and father on their farm in Blairstown Township (1870 United States Federal census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, 16 July 2004, page 41). Elias Titman was the brother of Baltis Titman, who was married to Marshall's sister Malinda Read. Lucy Read died 23 June 1875. She is listed as a deceased member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Blairstown in the 1916 program celebrating the church's 105th anniversary (Burd 1916). Marshall and Lucy had at least one child, a daughter named Zilla, who was born in about 1872.

Marshall's third wife was Electra Titman, daughter of Jeremiah M. Titman and Sarah M. Wildrick. She was born 27 May 1854 in Pennsylvania and died 1936. In 1880, Marshall and Electra lived in Knowlton Towwship, Warren County. The Read household included Marshall and Electra, Marshall's daughter Catherine (by Rebecca), his daughter Zilla (by Lucy) and the two sons he and Electra had together: Lewis and Harley. His occupation was listed as box manufacturer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 201, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 449B, 9 June 1880). Marshall was listed as a survivor in the 1906 obituary of his sister Malinda Titman. However, Electra appears as a widow on the 1910 United States Federal Census. It is assumed that Marshall died between 1906 and 1910.

CHILDREN OF MARSHALL READ AND LUCY TITMAN:

This needs to be verified. The three older children, Francis, Jenny and Catherine were born at approximately two year intervals in circa 1864, 1866 and 1868. They are known to be the children of Marshall's first wife, Rebecca Parr, who died in 1870. There is gap of about four years between Catherine and Zilla (who was born in 1872). Zilla, was probably the daughter of Marshall's third wife, Lucy Titman, who probably died in 1875. There is a four year gap between Zilla and Lewis (who was born in circa 1876). Marshall probably married Electra Titman in 1875, Lewis was born the following year. Two years later his brother Harley was born. There is also the matter of the place of birth, Lewis was born in Pennsylvania. Electra Titman was from Pennsylvania. She may have returned to her mother's home for her lying-in when her first child was born.

583. (iv.) ZILLA READ5, was born circa 1872 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1880, Zilla lived with her father and step-mother, her older half-sister Catherine, and two younger half-brothers Lewis and Harley in Knowlton Township.
