WILLIAM READ⁴

235. WILLIAM READ⁴ (Isaac Read, III³, John Read², Joseph Read¹) was born 1 May 1843 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 9 November 1914 (Kern 1938; Lorenz n.d.). He marriedSarah Emma Lanterman, the daughter of James D. Lanterman and Lucy Ann Rice. She was known as Emma, and was born 1856 in New Jersey. She died 1930, probably in New York City. William and Emma appear on the 1880 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey as residents of the village of Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township. William was a spoke manufacturer (1880 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 24). Sometime between 1880 and 1920, the family moved to New York City. William is listed as a resident of the city in the 1906 obituary of his sister Malinda Titman. Emma appears on the 1920 census as a widow. She lived at 270 St. Mark Ave. in Manhattan. Her daughters Lillian Read and Lucy Read Gordon, and her granddaughter Viola Gordon were living with her. None of the women were employed, Viola was attending college. Emma and her family appear to have been living in an apartment building. According to the census, they lived in dwelling number 18 and were family number 660. Dwelling 18 included families 655 through 691. It also included addresses on both St. Mark Ave. and Fort Washington Avenue (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1496, 23^rd Ward, Manhattan Borough, City of New York, New York, sheet 9B, 7 January 1920). William and Emma are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Emma's name on their stone is inscribed "Emma S. Read." Her name on the 1920 census is "Emma."

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM READ AND SARAH EMMA LANTERMAN:

589. (i.) LILLIAN VIOLA READ⁵, was born 1876 in New Jersey and died 1969. In 1880, she lived with her parents in Jacksonburg (1880 United States Federal Census, Village of Jacksonburg, Warren County, New Jersey,page 224). Forty years later she lived with her widowed mother in Manhatten. The 1920 census indicates that Lillian was single and that she was not working (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1496, 23^rd Ward, Manhatten Borough, City of New York, New York, sheet 9B, 7 January 1920). She is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey.

590. (ii.) LUCY READ⁵, was born 1878 in New Jersey and died unknown. In 1880, she lived with her parents in Jacksonburg (1880 United States Federal Census, Village of Jacksonburg, Warren County, New Jersey, page 224). Lucy married Unknown Gordon However, it appears that her marriage had ended by 1920. It is difficult to read her marital status in the 1920 census, but it appears to be divorced. The census indicates that Mr. Gordon was born in California. At some point the Gordons lived in Massachusetts, as their daughter Viola was born there in about 1903. In 1920, Lucy lived with her widowed mother, her sister Lillian and her daughter Viola in Manhatten. The 1920 census indicates that she was not working (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1496, 23^rd Ward, Manhatten Borough, City of New York, New York, sheet 9B, 7 January 1920). Child of Lucy Read Gordon:

591. (iii.) FRANK READ⁵, was born September 1879 in New Jersey and died 1938. He married Amelia V. (Last Name Unknown). She was born in 1883 in New York and died in 1949. Her father was from Germany and her mother was from Canada (of English descent). In 1920, Frank and Amelia lived at 3053 Bayley Ave. in the Bronx. Frank was a restuarant proprietor. The Reads appear to have lived in an apartment house. They were listed in the 1920 census as living in dwelling 82. They were family number 273. The census lists families 270 through 280 as residents of dwelling 82 (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 461, Bronx Borough, City of New York, New York, sheet 12B, 9 January 1920). Frank and Amelia are buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Warren County, New Jersey.

592. (iv.) WILLIE CLARENCE READ⁵, was born 1881 in New Jersey and died 1883. He is buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Warren County, New Jersey.
