BENJAMIN FRANK MARTIN4
236. BENJAMIN FRANK MARTIN4 (Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born September 30, 1820 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Richman 1911:585), probably in Hardwick Township and died 29 December 1880, near Swartswood, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (Richman 1911:585; Sussex County Surrogate Court Records, hereinafter SCSCR, Letters of Adminstration Book A:224). He married Mary S. Pittenger, daughter of William Pittenger and Hannah Van Horn (Kern 1938; Richman 1911:585). She was born August 1821 in New Jersey and died December 1901 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 175, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 6 June 1900; Richman 1911:585). Benjamin and Mary are buried in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey.
Benjamin F. Martin and Mary S. Pittenger had 12 children betweeen about 1845 and 1865. They had at least 20 grandchildren who were born between 1873 and 1910 and 28 great-grandchildren who were born between 1909 and 1934. I have identified 15 second great-grandchildren; 30 third great-grandchildren and 9 fourth great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 114.
Children of Benjamin F. Martin and Mary S. Pittenger |
852. (i.) ARMANTHA A. MARTIN5, was born circa 1845 in New Jersey (1850 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 86B) and died before 11 February 1881. Neither her birth nor death were recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997). She was not a resident of her parents' household in 1860 (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater). Nor is she listed in the petition presented to the court by her mother on 11 February 1881 for Letters of Adminstration for the estate of her father (SCSCR Letters of Administration Book A:224). As she is not listed as an heir in the petition, it is probable that she died before 1881. The fact that she is not listed on the 1860 census (when she would have been 15 years old) suggests that she died earlier than 1860.
853. (ii.) EMIT E. MARTIN5, was born circa 1847 in New Jersey (1850 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 86B) and died before 11 February 1881. His birth was not recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997). In 1860, Emit attended school and lived with his parents in Stillwater Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater). Emit, who would have been 23 in 1870, was not listed as a resident of his parents household on the census (1870 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219, 16 July 1870, Post Office: Stillwater). There is an Emmet Martin age 25 listed in the 1870 census in Lackawanna Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. According to the census, this Emmet Martin was born in Pennsylvania. He was employed as a teamster and boarded with the family of Samuel and Olivia Webb. Samuel Webb was a carpenter. His two young sons Charles (age 12) and George (age 11) both worked as slate pickers for the local coal company. There was one other boarder in the Webb house, Oliver Swartz, who was also a teamster (1870 United States Census, Lackawanna Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 65, 15 August 1870, Post Office: Old Forge). Emit is not listed in the petition presented to the court by his mother on 11 February 1881 for Letters of Adminstration for the estate of his late father (SCSCR Letters of Administration Book A:224). As he is not listed as an heir in the petition, it is probable that he died before 1881.
854. (iii.) BARTHENIA ISIRENE "Isa" MARTIN5, was born April 1850 in New Jersey and died after 11 February 1881 (SCSCR Letters of Administration Book A:224). She appears on the 1850 census as a two month old child living with her parents and older siblings on their farm in Stillwater Township. Her name is given as Barthenia Martin (1850 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 86B). Her birth was not recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997). The 1860 census gives her name as Isa I. Martin. During that census year, she attended school and lived in Stillwater Township with her parents (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater). Isa still lived with her parents in Stillwater Township in 1870, she was employed as a domestic servant (1870 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219, 16 July 1870, Post Office: Stillwater). By 1880 she was employed as a weaver. The census gives her name as Ireene Martin. She boarded in the home of James and Almira Erway in Stillwater Township. James Erway was a boot and shoe maker. He and Almira had two young children (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Village of Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 186A, 23 and 24 June 1880). Isa is listed as an heir in the February 1881 petition presented to the court by her mother for Letters of Administration for her late father's estate (SCSCR Book A:224). Her address in the petition was given as Swartswood, New Jersey. Isa was single in February 1881.
855. (iv.) ORON O. MARTIN5, was born 30 April 1851 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 11 February 1881. Only the baby's birth date was recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997). He appears in the 1860 census as a school-boy living with his parents in Stillwater Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater). The 1860 census gives his name as Orlean E. Martin. He appears on the 1870 census as Orrin Martin. In that census year he boarded with Anthony Detutt in South Sterling, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. In addition to his wife and five children, Detutt had five male boarders who worked for the local sawmill (one of whom was Orrin) and three male boarders who were teamsters (1870 United States Federal Census, Sterling Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, page 339, 29 July 1870, Post Office South Sterling). Orrin married by 1873, but his wife's name is not known. He and his wife were still married in 1880, but they were not living together. In 1880, Orrin (given as Arland Martin in the census) lived with his parents and his daughter on the Martin family farm in Stillwater Township. He was employed as a laborer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 184C, 19 and 20 June 1880). Oron may have come home because his father was ill. Benjamin Martin died 29 December 1880 and by February 1881, Oron was living in Sandens, Pennsylvania. He is listed as an heir in the February 1881 petition presented to the court by his mother for Letters of Administration for his late father's estate. The petition gives his name as Orrin O. Martin (SCSCR Book A:224). Orron is buried in his family's plot in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. His name is given on the grave monument as Oron O. Martin. There are no dates carved on the Martin monument, which was visited on 14 April 2005. Child of Oron Martin:
3088. (i.) BULA MARTIN6, was born circa 1873 in Pennsylvania and died unknown. In 1880, Bula lived with her father and Martin grandparents in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 185, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 184C, 19 and 20 June 1880).
856. (v.) MARY E. MARTIN5, was born 4 August 1853 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 11 February 1881. Only the her birth date was recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997). She appears in the 1860 census as a school-girl living with her parents in Stillwater Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater). Mary was not a resident of her parents household in 1870 (1870 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219, 16 July 1870, Post Office: Stillwater). She may be the Mary Martin who was a domestic servant in the house of William H. and Emma Bell in 1880. The Bells lived in Frankford, Sussex County. William Bell appears to have been retired in 1880. The household included Emma Bells's parents and sisters and another indvidual who was probably employed by the family (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 176, Frankford Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 42B, 17 June 1880). Mary's father died six months after the census was enumerated. She is named as an heir in the February 1881 petition presented to the court by her mother for Letters of Administration for Benjamin Martin's estate (SCSCR Book A:224). Her address in the petition was given as Swartswood, New Jersey. Mary was single in February 1881.
3075. (vi.) SON MARTIN5, was born 10 December 1854 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and probably died before 1860. His name was not recorded in the Stillwater Township birth records; only his birthdate and sex were recorded (Pascal 1997). It is asssumed that he died by 1860, as he does not appear on the census as a resident of his parents household (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater).
857. (vii.) WALTER EDWARD MARTIN5, was born 17 January 1857, possibly in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 21 February 1921, in Muscatine County, Iowa (Richman 1911:585). His name was not recorded in the Stillwater Township birth records (Pascal 1997), He appears as Edwin A. Martin in the Latter Day Saints files (LDS Batch #C509791, birth year is given as 1856). Walter married on 23 April 1884 in Muscatine County, Iowa, Adelaide G. "Addie" McClean, daughter of William and Hannah McClean. She was born 2 March 1856 in Virginia (now West Virginia) and died 4 March 1941 (Richman 1911:585).
858. (viii.) RICHMOND S. MARTIN5, was born 15 March 1858 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 1910. His name and birth date are recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997). Richmond appears in the 1860 census living with his parents in Stillwater Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308). He was still a resident of his parent's household in 1870. He attended school during the census year (1870 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219). Richmond was listed as an heir in the 1881 petition presented to the court by his mother for Letters of Administration for his late father's estate (SCSCR Book A:224). His address in the petition was given as Swartswood, New Jersey. He married in 1899 or 1900, Laura M. (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1878 in New Jersey. In 1910, they lived on a farm on Swartswood Road in Newton Township. Richmond and Laura owned the farm free and clear of all mortgages. They had been married ten years and did not have children (1910 United States Census, Enumeration District 177, 1st Ward, Newton Borough, Newton Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 12A, 27 April 1911).
859. (ix.) LAURA SEMENTHA MARTIN5, was born 29 September 1859 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died after 11 February 1881. The baby's name is recorded as "Mahala" in the Stillwater Township birth records (Pascal 1997). She appears as "Sementha L." in the 1860 census. Her age in the census is given as 8 months (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308). She is listed as "Laura S." in the 1870 census. She attended school with her brother Richmond and sister Mattie during the census year (1870 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219). Laura is listed as an heir in the 1881 petition presented to the court by her mother for Letters of Administration for her late father's estate (SCSCR Book A:224). Her address in the petition was given as Swartswood, New Jersey.
860. (x.) MARTHA L. "MATTIE" MARTIN5, was born 4 November 1860 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (Pascal 1997) and died after 11 February 1881 (SCSCR Book A:224). She appears twice in the Stillwater birth records. The first listing is on 4 November 1860 as "Martha Martin." The second listing is at the end of 1861, or in early 1862 (there is no month or day associated) as "Martha L. Martin". The 1870 census lists a Martha L. Martin, age 9 (1870 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219, 16 July 1870, Post Office: Stillwater). This age matches the 4 November 1860 birthdate, as Martha was 9 years old when the census was taken. The two listings in the birth records appear to be for the same inidividual and not for two separate individuals. The baby born in 1860, who was named Martha, obviously survived to 1870 when the census was taken. In 1870, Martha L. Martin was a school girl living with her parents in Stillwater Township. By 1880, Martha Martin was a servant in the household of Richard V. and Margaret A. Northrup. Richard Northrup was a farmer who lived near Hampton in Sussex County. The Northrups had four children. A hired man named Wesley Snover also lived in the household (1880 United States Federal Census, Hampton, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 90B). Mattie is listed as an heir in the February 1881 petition presented to the court by her mother for Letters of Administration for her late father's estate (SCSCR Book A:224). Her name in the petition is given as "Mattie L. Martin," and her address as Scranton, Lackawana County, Pennsylvania. She married after 1881, (First Name Unknown) Borethree. Martha is buried in the Benjamin Martin plot in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. There are no dates carved on the Martin monument, which was visited on 14 April 2005.
861. (xi.) MELVILLE MARTIN5, was born 11 October 1862 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died 2 December 1863 in Stillwater, Sussex County, New Jersey. His birth and death are recorded in the Stillwater Township records (Pascal 1997).
862. (xii.) JERRY E. "Jock" MARTIN5, was born 26 March 1865 in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died 1948 (Klaus 2005; Pascal 1997). His birth and name are recorded in the Stillwater Township birth records. Jerry married circa 1884, Martha Jean "Jeanie" Staley. She was born February 1866 in New Jersey and died between 1910 and 1920 (1920 United States Census, Enumeration District 141, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 5 January 1930; Klaus 2002). Jerry remarried by 1930. His second wife was Maude L. (Last Name Unknown). She was born 22 December 1879 in Pennsylvania and died November 1970 probably in Easton, Northampton County, Pennsylvania (Social Security Death Index). Jerry and Martha Jean are buried in the Benjamin Martin plot in Stillwater Cemetery, Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. Martha's name is on the large Martin monument as "Martha J. Martin," there are no dates carved on the monument. There is a smaller stone for Jerry on the plot which is labeled "Jerry E. Martin, 1865 - 1948." The Martin plot was visited on 14 April 2005.
Benjamin Frank Martin was the eldest child of the nine children of Jonathan Martin and Lydia Read. He was born 30 September 1820 in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey (Richman 1911:585), probably in Hardwick Township. His father's farm was located in Hardwick Township on the census for 1830 and 1840. Benjamin was listed as a resident of Jonathan Martin's household on both. He appears as a male between the ages of 5 and 9 on the 1830 census, which was taken a few months before his tenth birthday (1830 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 438). And, as a male between the ages of 15 and 19 on the 1840 census, which was taken a few months before his twentieth birthday (1840 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 380). Benjamin married sometime between 1840 and 1845. His bride was Mary S. Pittenger, the daughter of William Pittinger and Hannah Van Horn. Mary was born August 1821 in New Jersey and died December 1901 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 175, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 6 June 1900; Richman 1911:585).
Benjamin and Mary Martin lived most of their adult lives in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. The births of eight of their twelve children are recorded in the township records (Pascal 1997). By 1850, three of the Martin's twelve children had been born: Armantha, Emit and an infant named Barthenia Isirene (known as Isa). The births of these children are not recorded in the Stillwater Township birth records. It is possible that the family moved to Stillwater Township shortly after Isa's birth, or that Mary had her children elsewhere, at her parents's or in-law's home. The 1850 census places the family in Stillwater Township and values their farm at $800. Table 1 is a list of the resident in the Martin household in 1850.

By 1860, seven children were living in the Martin household: Emit, Isa, Orrin (named as Orlean in the census), Mary, Walter, Richmond and Laura (named as Semantha in the census) (1860 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 308, 10 August 1860, Post Office Stillwater). Armantha, who would have been 13, was not a member of the household. It is possible that she died before the 1860 census was enumerated. An infant son, who was born 10 December 1854, is not on the 1860 census. It is assumed that he also died before the census was taken. All of the children born after Isa, with the exception of Walter, are listed in the Stillwater Township birth records. A note after the baby born in December 1854 indicates that the Martins left the County (Pascal 1997). According to the Latter Day Saints Files (LDS Batch #C509791), Walter was born in Hardwick Township in Warren County (which is adjacent to Stillwater Township in Sussex County). It appears that the Martins left their farm in Stillwater in late 1854 or early 1855 and settled in Hardwick Township. Their son Walter was born there in January 1857. But, by March 1858, the Martins were back in Stillwater Township, as their son Richmond's birth is listed in the Township's birth records (Pascal 1997). If the Martin's sold their Stillwater farm, moved back to Hardwick, and then purchased a new farm in Stillwater 1857 or 1858, then this could account for the $400 increase in value of their real estate holdings between 1850 and 1860. The 1860 census indicates that they owned land and that it was valued at $1,200. It also listed Benjamin's occupation as farmer. I am assuming that the majority of his real estate holdings were located in Stillwater Township. Table 2 lists the residents in the Martin household in 1860. The children living in the household in 1860 are listed in Table 2.

The 1870 census indicates an even greater increase in the value of the Martin farm. The census listed the family's real estate holdings as worth $6,000. They held a personal estate worth $1,000. This may in part be due to the death of Benjamin's father Jonathan Martin in 1869 and to Banjamin's receipt of his share of his father's estate. All twelve of the Martin children had been born by 1870. Six of the children lived at home in 1870: Isa, Walter, Richmond, Laura, Martha and Jerry. The two youngest children had been born since the 1860 census (1870 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 219, 16 July 1870, Post Office: Stillwater). At least three of the Martin's children had died before 1870: Armantha, an infant son and a son named Melville, who was born in 1862 and had died as an infant (Pascal 1997). Three of the Martin children had moved out of the house by 1870. Emit Martin was probably living in Lackawanna Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, where he was employed as a teamster (1870 United States Census, Lackawanna Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 65, 15 August 1870, Post Office: Old Forge). Orrin Martin lived in South Sterling, Pennsylvania and worked in sawmill (1870 United States Federal Census, Sterling Township, Wayne County, Pennsylvania, page 339, 29 July 1870, Post Office South Sterling). Table three shows the composition of the household of Ben and Mary Martin in 1870:

Benjamin Martin was still a farmer in 1880. Most of the Martin children had grown up and left home by that year. The census lists five people living in the Martin household (Table 4): Benjamin and Mary, their sons Orrin and Jerry and their granddaughter Bula Martin. Bula was Orrin's daughter (1880 United States Federal Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 184C). Most of the other Martin children lived near their parents. An 1881 petition to the surrogate court of Sussex County lists the residences of Isa, Mary, Richmond, and Laura Martin as Swartswood in Stillwater Township, Sussex County. Mattie (Martha) Martin lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania (SCSCR Letters of Administration Book A:224). In June 1880, Walter Martin lived in Oakland County, Michigan and worked for the Bird family, who were probably former residents of Warren County (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 250, Brandon, Oakland County, Michigan, page 59D, 8 June 1880). Emit Martin is not listed in the 1881 petition so it is assumed that he had died by that date (SCSCR Letters of Administration Book A:224).

Benjamin F. Martin died intestate (i.e. without a will) near the town of Swartswood in Stillwater Township on 29 December 1880. Mary appeared before the Surrogate Court of Sussex County on 11 February 1881. At that time she filed a petition asking that the court grant Letters of Administration for the estate to her. She gave her address as Swartswood, New Jersey. Eight of the twelve Martin children were listed in the petition as heirs-at-law of Benjamin Martin. They were Isirene, Orrin, Mary, Walter, Richmond, Laura, Mattie and Jerry Martin (SCSCR Letters of Administration Book A:224). Mattie and Jerry were the only children who were not of age in 1881. Mattie had just turned 20 the previous autumn and Jerry would turn 16 the following month. Most of the Martin children lived near their mother in 1881. The exceptions were Orrin who resided in Sanders, Pennsylvania; Walter who lived in Greenwood, Michigan, and Mattie who lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Benjamin F. Martin was buried in Stillwater Cemetery in the village of Stillwater, Stillwater Township, Sussex County.
In 1900, Mary S. Pittenger Martin lived with her son Jerry Martin and his wife Martha Jean, on the Martin farm in Stillwater Township. Jerry and Martha Jean had five children living in 1900. Martha's younger sister Anna M. Staley lived with the family and worked as a domestic servant (probably in the Martin household for her room and board). According to the census, Mary Martin was a "landlord." She was also the mother of 12 children, seven of whom were still living in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 175, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 3A, 6 June 1900). Mary died 18 months later in December 1901 (Richman 1911:585). She was buried in Stillwater Cemetery with Benjamin. Their son Oron and daughter Martha Borethree were also buried in their plot, as was their son Jerry and his first wife Martha Jean. There are no dates carved in the Martin monument. There is a smaller stone for Jerry on the plot. His name is not on the main monument, although there appears to have been a space left to cut his name. The Martin plot was visited on 14 April 2005.
