MARTHA A. "MATTIE" VANSCOTEN VAN KIRK5

2374. MARTHA A. "MATTIE" VANSCOTEN,5 (Margaret Kinney4, Catherine Read3, Aaron Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 10 May 1873, in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS IGI) and died after 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Town, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4B, 5 April 1930). In 1880, Mary lived with her parents in Walnut Valley, Blairstown Township and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 290D, 11 June 1880). She married on 16 November 1898, John B. Van Kirk (LDS IGI). He was born circa 1872 in New Jersey. John Van Kirk was a house carpenter. Mattie and John lived in a rented home in Knowlton Township, Warren County. Mattie worked as a beautician, her beauty shop was in their home. According to the census they were the parents of five children, four of them were still living in 1910. These children were Walter, Marion, Madison and Varna. The census indicated that John Van Kirk had been out of work for 4 months in 1909 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 3B, 26 April 1910).

In 1920, the couple lived in a rented home on Park Avenue in the town of Blairstown. Their son Lawrence had been born the year after the census, however, their son Madison had died 1910 and 1920. Four of their children were still living: Walter, Marion, Verna and Lawrence (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 151, Blairstown Town, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 11A, 24 January 1920). The family still lived in a rented home in the town of Blairstown in 1930. According to the census they paid $23 per month in rent. The family did not own a radio. John was an unemployed house carpenter at the time of the census. Only one of the Van Kirk children lived at home in 1930. That child was 18 year old Lawrence. He was not employed, nor was he in school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-4, Blairstown Town, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4B, 5 April 1930).
