HANNAH MARIA MARTIN ALLEN4

239. HANNAH MARIA MARTIN4 (Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born circa 1828 in New Jersey and died unknown. Kern (1938) gives her birth date as circa 1835, but the 1850 census places her age at 22 years (1850 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 91B). Hannah married William Allen, Jr. on 27 April 1848 in Warren County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Warren Journal, 9 May 1848; Warren County Marriages). William Allen was born 6 June 1822, in New Jersey and died 20 November 1857, at the age of 35 years, 5 months and 14 days. He was buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church yard, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). Hannah Martin Allen disappears from the records after this date.

Hannah Martin and William Allen had at least 5 children between 1848 and 1857. I have identified 8 grandchildren who were born between circa 1874 and 1892. They had at least 1 great-grandchild who was born in about 1908. Total identified descendants equals 14.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Hannah Maria Martin was the third daughter and fourth child of the nine children of Jonathan Martin and Lydia Read. She was born circa 1828 in Warren County, New Jersey. Kern (1938) gives her birth date as circa 1835, but the 1850 census places her age at 22 years (1850 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 91B). The census age would put her birth in circa 1828. Given that she married in 1848, it is far more likely that her birth year was 1828—making her 20 years old at marriage—rather than 1835—making her 13 years old at marriage. Hannah was probably born in Hardwick Township. Hannah was listed as a resident of Jonathan Martin's household on both the 1830 and 1840 census. The Martins lived in Hardwick Township. She appears as a female between the ages of 5 and 9 on the 1830 census (1830 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 438), and as a female child between the ages of 15 and 19 on the 1840 census (1840 United States Federal Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 380).

Hannah married William Allen, Jr. on 27 April 1848 in Warren County, New Jersey (Kern 1938; Warren County Marriages). Their wedding was announced in the
Warren Journal on 9 May 1848: "On the 27th ult., by Elder Wm. Bradley, Wm. Allen, jr. of Paulina, to Hannah Maria Martin, of Hardwick." Elder William Bradley was the pastor of the Hope Christian Church in Hope Township, Warren County between April 1846 and April 1848. He left Hope shortly after he performed the wedding ceremony of William and Hannah (Snell 1881:666).

William Allen was born 6 June 1822, in New Jersey. He was employed as a tailor. In 1850, the Allens lived in Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey. Stillwater, although in Sussex County, shares a common border with Hardwick Township in Warren County. Hannah lived fairly close to her parents after her marriage. William Allen was listed as a 27 year old tailor in the census. No property value was given in the census which probably indicates that the Allens were renting their home. It is possible that they lived in the village of Stillwater, as William Allen was a tradesman. The couple had two sons in 1850, 1 year old Martin and his infant brother George (1850 United States Census, Stillwater Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 91B, 30 July 1850). The Allens had a daughter named Turressa, who was born April 1852 and died 29 days later on the May 23rd. She was buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church yard, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). They had two more daughters after Turessa, one born 2 July 1853 and the other born 18 March 1857. The names of these two little girls are not currently known, nor do have any other information concerning them (LDS Batch C509771).

William Allen died on 20 November 1857, at the age of 35 years, 5 months and 14 days. He was buried in Marksboro Presbyterian Church yard, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). Hannah Martin Allen disappears from the records after this date, as do all of her children, with the exception of her son Martin Allen. Martin Allen eventually moved to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. I did find the death of a Mrs. Hannah Allen in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County on 7 October 1898. This woman was 72. Hannah Martin Allen would have been around 70 years old in 1898 (Couthouse Gang n.d.a.).
