She married JOHN ALLEN. He was born 22 March 1791 and died 17 October 1872 in Warren County, New Jersey, age 81 years, 6 months and 23 days. John Allen appears on the 1830 United States Census as a resident of Knowlton Township (page 377). He appears on the 1850 United States Census as a resident of Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. John was remarried in 1850. His wife's name was Elizabeth, she was 52 years old (born circa 1798). One son by Elizabeth was living in the household, John C. Allen, age 18 (born circa 1832). A young woman by the name of Mary Ann Wildrick, age 20 (born circa 1830), also lived in the household. John and Azuba are buried in Union Brick Cemetery in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Azuba's headstone is gone, but her grave is marked with a footstone inscribed A.A.
Azuba Read and John Allen had one child who was born in 1821. They had at least seven grandchildren, who were born between 1846 and 1862. I have identifed seven great-grandchildren born between circa 1874 and 1887; three second great-grandchildren born between 1902 and 1913; and two third great-grandchildren who were born between circa 1922 and 1926. Total identified descendants equals 20.
CHILD OF AZUBA READ AND JOHN ALLEN:
161. (i.) ALENAH MARIA ALLEN4 (Azuba Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1), was born 26 January 1821 in in Sussex (now Warren) County, New Jersey, probably in Knowlton Township and died 5 December 1876. She is named in her grandfather Isaac Read, Sr.'s will as "Lanah Marye Allen," the daughter of John and Azuba Allen (alias Azuba Read). Isaac's will, written in March 1838, left a legacy of $500 to Lanah when she reached the age of 21 and not before. On 21 March 1842, shortly after her 21st birthday, Alenah and and her husband, Epentus Everitt signed a reciept for the payment of the $500, plus $4.59 cents interest, from the estate of Isaac Read, Sr.. Allenah signed her name on the reciept as Allenah Maria Allen, even though she was married (Warren County Surrogate Court Records, Receipts Book 1, page 104). She and Epenetus Everitt were married on 5 October 1839 in Warren County (Warren County Marriages (LDS, Files #1294806 - 1294808)). Epenetus was born 18 May 1818 in New Jersey. The 1850 United States Federal Census, for Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey lists Epenetus and Allenah Everitt. Epenetus was a farmer in 1850, with real estate valued at $2,000. The couple still lived in Hope Township in 1870. The value of their realestate had increased to $10,000 and they owned a personal estate valued at $1,900. There were seven children living in the household. Two of the boys were in school—14 year old Theodore and 10 year old Irving—John and George (ages 25 and 19) worked as farm laborers, Margaret and Sabina (ages 21 and 15) were presumably helping Allenah with the household chores, and 7 year old David had not yet started school (1870 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 177B-178A, 7 August 1870). Allenah died 5 December 1876, age 55 years, 10 months and 9 days and was buried in Swazye Cemetery, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Reuther n.d.). Epenetus remarried between 1876 and 1880. His new wife was a widow named Susan Huff (her maiden name is unknown). Susan was born 14 February 1838 in New Jersey and died 5 May 1914 (St. John's church yard). She had a young daughter, Emma Huff, who was born circa 1870 in New Jersey. In 1880, Epenetus, Susan, Emma Huff and Epentus's son Theodore (by Allenah) lived in Hope Township. Epentus was a farmer and Theodore worked on the farm with his father. Emma Huff attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 422A). Epenetus died 17 February 1893 and was buried in Swayze Cemetery with Allenah. Susan Everitt died in 1914 and was buried in St. John's Methodist church yard in the village of Hope, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Her grave stone was field checked on 24 March 2004.
