FAMILY ALBUM OF DAVID R. and JOHN OGDEN MARTIN
David R. Martin died early in the Civil War at Camp Nevin, Hardin County, Kentucky. He was interred in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky in November 1861. His widow, Drusilla Martin, erected a stone for him in the family plot in Old Sycamore Cemetery, Sycamore, Wyandot County, Ohio. David's parents, Jonathan and Lydia Martin (who were still living in Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey), also erected a monument in Union Brick Cemetery, Blairstown Township, Warren County. The Union Brick Cemetery monument was a memorial not only to their deceased son David, but to their son John Ogden Martin, who was killed in action in May 1864 in Virginia (and is probably buried there). Other sides of the monument include an inscription for Jonathan Martin (who is probably buried in Union Brick), Lydia Martin (who died in Iowa in 1883, burial place is uncertain) and the Martin's youngest son Philetus Bradley who died in 1926 (and is probably buried in Unon Brick). The close up shot of the monument, to the left, was taken 24 March 2004 at dusk. The full shot of the monument (below) was taken 21 November 2004 at about mid-day. Both photographs were taken by Esther Doyle Read.
The memorial face for David and his brother John Ogden is inscribed:
