ORTON R.OSMUN5

2424. ORTON R. OSMUN5 (Charles Irving Osmun4, Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1) was born September 1890 and died 1959 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheets 6A-B, 25 June 1900; Ramseyburg Cemetery). Orton appears on the 1900 United States census as a 10 year old. He attended school for 9 months during the 1909-1910 school year, while his older brothers Luther and Clayton attended school for 7 months. They probably had a shorter school year because they worked for their father on the family farm during the year (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheets 6A-B, 25 June 1900; Ramseyburg Cemetery). In 1910, Orton was still living at home with his parents. The Osmun farm was on the Belvidere Road in Delware, Knowlton Township. The census taker originally wrote down that Orton worked as a wage earning laborer, but then crossed that out. Orton probably did work on the family farm, but his father may not have paid him a wage. He was 19 years old in 1910 and was not in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheet 4B, 28 April 1910).

Orton married in late 1910 or early 1911, Edith M. (Last Name unknown). She was born circa 1893 in New Jersey. By 1920, Orton and Margaret lived on a farm on Allen Road in Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. They owned the farm free and clear of mortgages. The couple had four children: Arnold, Thelma, Evelyn and Vivian (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, Sheet 9A, 20 January 1920). Edith and Orton were living in separate homes in 1930. Edith and the four children lived in a rented home in Hampton, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Edith worked as a mender in a hosiery mill. Her monthly rent was $15 per month. All of the children were in school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 10-16, Hampton Borough, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Sheet 9A, 16 April 1930). Orton was a farm hand in Knowlton Township. He worked for George and Mary Van Kirk. They lived on RD 1 Delaware in Knowlton Township, Warren County. Orton's first cousin once removed, Helen Allen (Charles Allen5, Emmaretta Osmun4, Sarah Ann Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1) was a domestic servant in the Van Kirk household (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21-13, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 4B, 10 & 11 April 1920).

Orton appears to have divorced Edith. His wife's name on the cemetery stone is Margaret B. (Last Name Unknown). She was born 9 May 1899 and died November 1984 (Ramseyburg Cemetery; Social Security Death Index). They appear to have remained in Warren County for the remainder of thier lives. Orton died in 1959. Margaret resided in Columbia, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey at the time of her death in 1984. They are buried with his Orton's in Ramseyburg Cemetery, Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey. Their graves were field checked 15 April 2005. There is one large stone which markes the grave.
