WALTER CLEVELAND AYERS5

2432 .WALTER CLEVELAND AYERS5 (Sarah Maria Read4, Samuel D. Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 12 October 1866 in Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 25 May 1924 in Phelps County, Missouri (LDS AFN:33T8-D2; LDS Batch #C509821, sheet 00, film; IGI). In 1880, Walter lived with his parents, Jacob Cummins Ayers and Sarah Maria Read on their farm in Independence Township, Warren County and attended school (1880 United States Federal Census, Independence Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 434D). After his mother died on 21 September 1885, his father moved to Phelps County, Missouri. Jacob Ayers appears to have taken his three eldest sons west with him—Walter, Samuel and Robert—the five younger children stayed behind in New Jersey. Walter settled on the new farm in Missouri. His father soon remarried Margaret Elizabeth Mings on 14 March 1887. Walter may have lived with his father and step-mother. His father would have seven more children with Margaret. Walter also married within a few years of arriving in Missouri. On 5 March 1890, he married Louisa D. Goethe. She was born circa 1870 in Bavaria. Her parents brought her to the United States in 1872. The couple setttled on a farm in Cold Spring Township and raised four children. By 1920, all of the children, except the youngest son Robert, had moved out of the house. Walter died in May 1924. Louisa continued to work their farm after his death with the help of her son Robert (LDS IGI; 1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 67, Cold Spring Township, Phelps County, Missouri, sheet 2A; 1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 81-3, Cold Spring Township, Phelps County, Missouri, sheet 7B).
