CHILDREN OF HENRY and HANNAH BUNNELL:
(Stepchildren of Mary Margaret Lanterman Bunnell)

(i.) MARY ELIZABETH BUNNELL, was born 17 February 1850 in Walpack, Sussex County, New Jersey (the 1860 census gives her place of birth as Delaware) and died 27 September 1874, aged 24 years, 7 months and 10 days. Mary Elizabeth attended the Blair Presbyterial Academy (now Blair Academy) in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Anon 1898). In 1860, she lived with her father and her second step-mother, Ellen France, in the village of Hope. Mary Elizabeth's younger sister Hannah lived in the household, as did her younger half siblings, Arthur, Jacob and Rosanna Bunnell (the children of her first step-mother, Mary Margaret Lanterman Bunnell). The census does not indicate whether Mary Elizabeth was in school during the census year (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 20, 4 July 1860, post office Hope). Mary Elizabeth married on 8 July 1868, Calvin Eugene Raub, the son of Jacob Butts Raub and Rachel Diltz Lanterman. He was born 29 October 1845 in Warren County (Reuther 2002). In 1870, 20 year old Mary Elizabeth lived with her husband in her mother-in-law's house in Blairstown Township. Rachel Raub was a 55 year old widow. She was a second cousin of Mary Elizabeth's step-mother, Mary Margaret Lanterman Bunnell. Rachel Raub's parents were William and Isabella (Diltz) Lanterman. The census gives Rachel Raub's occupation as farmer. Her sons William Carlise Raub and Calvin E. Raub (ages 29 and 24) worked on the farm. William Carlisle Raub was married to Loemmi Read4 (Isaac S. Read3, David Read2, Joseph Read1), another second cousin of Mary Elizabeth's step-mother. Other members of the family included Calvin's 18 year old brother Albert S. Raub, 59 year old Eliza Raub and 10 year old Henry Mann (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 33A, 6 July 1870). Mary Elizabeth Bunnell Raub died in the autumn of 1874 and was buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery, Jacksonburg, Blairstown Township (Reuther n.d.). Calvin married again after Mary Elizabeth died. His second wife was Sarah Jane Smith, the daughter of Silas Smith and Jemina Lanterman. She was born 17 November 1835 and died 20 April 1906. Sarah was his second cousin through her mother Jemina, who was William's sister. William Lanterman was Calvin's grandfather (Reuther 2002). They appear on the 1880 census as residents of Blairstown Township (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 191, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 288C, 8 June 1880). Sarah Jane is also buried in Cedar Ridge Cemetery (Reuther n.d.).

(ii.) HANNAH JANE BUNNELL, was born either 1851 or 1852 in Walpack Township, Sussex County, New Jersey and died unknown. On the 1860 census, she is listed as an 8 year old child living with John and Mary Hull on their farm in Blairstown Township. The Hull's had a four year old daughter named Jessie. Isaac Bunnell and his family were listed adjacent to the Hull's on the census (1860 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 593B, 31 July 1860). The 1860 census also places her in her father's household in the village of Hope. Henry Bunnell owned a wheelwright shop in Hope. His household included 8 year old Hannah, Hannah's second step-mother, Ellen France, her older sister Mary Elizabeth, and her younger half-siblings: Arthur, Jacob and Rosanna Bunnell (the children of her first step-mother, Mary Margaret Lanterman Bunnell). The census does not indicate whether Hannah was in school during the census year (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 20, 4 July 1860, post office Hope). Hannah attended the Blair Presbyterial Academy (now Blair Academy) in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (Anon 1898). In 1870, she lived with her father and her second step-mother, Ellen France Bunnell in the village of Blairstown. Her father was a carriage maker. Other members of the family included her half- siblings Jacob and Rosa Anna Bunnell. Hannah was 18 years old in 1870 and had completed her schooling (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 36B, 9 July 1870). In 1898, Blair Academy celebrated it's fiftieth anniversary. The school published a booklet which detailed the history of the academy and listed all the former students and teachers of the school. Hannah Bunnel appears in the list of students. According to the booklet she was still living in 1898 and she was single (Anon 1898).

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Mary Margaret Lanterman was the eldest child of the three children of Jacob Lanterman and Rachael Read. Jacob's marriage to Rachael was actually his second marriage. In terms of her birth order in Jacob's overall family, she was the sixth child and third daughter of eight children (four sons and four daughters). Mary Margaret was born 16 January 1825 in Warren County, New Jersey. She appears as a female resident of her parents's household on the 1840 census and is named as a resident of their household on the 1850 census (1840 United States Federal Census Knowlton Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 368; 1850 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 453A). Mary Margaret was educated at Blair Presbyterial Academy (now Blair Academy) in Blairstown, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey. The academy was opened in 1848 as a co-educational facility (Anon 1898).

Mary Margaret married on 12 March 1853, Henry Bunnell as his second wife (Warren County Marriages). The wedding was announced in the Warren Journal on 24 March 1853:

On Saturday the 12th inst., at Hainesburg, by the Rev. John A. Reiley, Mr. Henry Bunnel, to Miss Mary Lanterman, all of Blairstown.

John A. Reiley was the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Blairstown from 1845 until 1866. He was joint pastor of the Blairstown Church and of Knowlton Presbyterian Church from 1845 until 1854. Mary Margaret's father was one of the first elders of the Blairstown church (Snell 1881:649-650).

Mary Margaret's new husband, Henry Bunnell, was born 17 June 1821 in Walpack Township, Sussex County, New Jersey (J.I. Blair Cemetery). He was the son of Henry Bunnell and Mary Nihart (Snell 1881:227). Henry's first wife was Hannah (Last name unknown). She was born 17 April 1829 and died 18 April 1852 (J.I. Blair Cemetery). At the time of his marriage to Mary Margaret, Henry had two children by his first wife: Mary Elizabeth (born 1850) and Hannah Jane (born 1851 or 1852). Mary Margaret began her married life with an instant family.

Henry and Mary Margaret had three children of their own during the four short years that they were married: Arthur (born 1854), Jacob (born 1855) and Rosa Anna (born 1857). Mary Margaret died 19 September 1857 (age 32 years, 8 months and 3 days), three months after the birth of her daughter Rosa Anna. She was buried in the J.I. Blair Cemetery in Blairstown. After Mary Margaret's death, Henry married as his third wife, Eleanor France, daughter of Abram and Keturah France. She was born 18 November 1833 (the New Jersey Herald, 12 March 1914). Eleanor's grandparents were Jacob France and Elizabeth Vaughn. Elizabeth Vaughn was the step-daughter of Hannah Read Ogden Vaughn, Hannah Vaughn was Mary Margaret Lanterman's great-aunt. Henry and Eleanor did not have children, they raised Henry's children by Hannah and Mary Margaret. The children all attended Blair Academy in Blairstown (Anon 1898), near the cemetery where their mothers were buried.

In 1860, Henry Bunnell was a master wheelwright with a shop in the village of Hope. He lived in Hope with Ellen, his five children, a live-in domestic named Merinda Heath (age 19), a young apprentice named Lewis Shipps (age 19), and another wheelwright named John Black (Table 1). The later was 25 years old and would eventually marry Margaret M. Read4 (Martin Read3, Samuel Read2, Joseph Read1), a second cousin of Henry's second wife, Mary Margaret Lanterman (Rachel Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1). Henry Bunnell did not own property in Hope. The census gives no value for real estate holdings, only a value of $2,000 for a personal estate (1860 United States Federal Census, Hope Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 20, 4 July 1860, post office Hope).

The Bunnells remained in Hope for only a short while. In 1861, Henry opened a carriage shop in Blairstown known as Bunnell & Lanterman. This was replaced in 1863 by a partnership with was George Carter. Henry sold the business in 1870 to Isaac Lanterman (Snell 1880:653). In 1870, Henry lived in the village of Blairstown with his third wife Ellen and three of his children. His daughter Mary Elizabeth (by Hannah) had married Calvin Raub in 1868. She lived with her husband and his mother (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 33A, 6 July 1870). Henry's son Arthur (by Mary Margaret) had died two years earlier at the age of 14. He was buried in the J.I. Blair cemetery in Blairstown (his grave was visited 24 November 2004). Henry's former mother-in-law, Rachel Read Lanterman (Mary Margaret's mother), lived with the family of George Andress. George was a carriage painter and was listed adjacent to Henry Bunnell on the census. Table 2 is a list of the residents of Henry Bunnell's household in 1870. In addition to his wife and children, an apprentice carriage maker named Robert Hill, and newlyweds Isaac and Sarah Andress also lived in the Bunnell household. Isaac Andress was also a carriage maker (1870 United States Federal Census, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 36B, 9 July 1870). It is possible that Henry Bunnell, George Andress and Isaac Andress were partners.
