READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS
ANDREW JACKSON COURSEN3
256. ANDREW JACKSON "A.J." COURSEN4 (Hannah Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 21 April 1831 in Warren County, New Jersey and died 31 January 1892, possibly in Kingston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He married his second cousin (once removed) SARAH ELIZABETH HOWELL5, the daughter of Levi Howell and (124) Sarah Luse4 (Elizabeth Read3, Isaac Read, Sr.2, Joseph Read1). Sarah was born July 1839 in Pennsylvania and died after 1900, probably in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. According to Howell and Phethean (2000:107), she was possibly raised by her grandparents after her mother's death in 1839, as she does not appear on the 1850 census in Levi Howell's household. If she was raised by her grandparents, it was her paternal grandparents. She does not appear in the household of her maternal grandmother Elizabeth Luse on the 1850 United States Federal Census for Warren County, New Jersey (page 488). Sarah and Andrew were married in Warren County, New Jersey, on 25 November 1857 (Howell and Phethean 2000:107; Warren County Marriages). They settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania after their marriage. They were living there in November 1859 when their son Isaac was born. The 1860 census places the family on a farm in Dallas Township in Luzerne County. The Coursens (spelled Carson in the census) owned their farm, which was valued at $5,000. They also held a personal estate of $1,200. They also had live-in hired help, a 14 year old girl named Martha Steele (1860 United States Census, Dallas Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 115, 12 July 1860). The family still lived in Dallas Twonship in 1870. Their farm was valued at $6,000 and their personal estate was valued at $3,000. A.J. and Sarah had two children in 1870, 10 year old Isaac and 8 year old Emma. Nineteen year old Martha Griffith lived with the family and worked as their domestic servant (1870 United States Census, Dallas Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 363A, 4 July 1870, Post Office Dallas). Between 1870 and 1880, the Coursen family sold their farm and moved across the Susquehanna River to Parrish Street, in the 14th Ward of the city of Wilkes-Barre in Luzerne County. Andrew was employed as a retail grocer in 1880. His household consisted of himself, Sarah and their two children: Isaac and Emma (1880 United States Census, Enumeration District 125, 14th Ward, city of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 39A, 9 June 1880; Howell and Phethean 2000:107). The family moved back across the river to Kingston in Luzerne County before 1900. A.J. Coursen probably died there in 1892. Sarah was living in Kingston at 22 Custer Alley when the census was enumerated in 1900. Sarah owned the house. She had a boarder—67 year old Emaline Shuster (born January 1833), who was a widow. Emaline Shuster was also from New Jersey (1900 United States Census, Enumeration District 77, 3rd Ward, Kingston Borough, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 15B, 18 June 1900).Andrew Jackson Coursen and Sarah Elizabeth Howell had 2 children who were born between 1859 and 1862. They had at least 11 grandchildren who were born between 1892 and 1911 and at least 10 great-grandchildren. Total identified descendants equals 23.

By 1880, Isaac's parents had moved across the Susquehanna River to Parrish Street in the city of Wilkes-Barre. Isaac was 20 in 1880 and was attending school (1880 United States Census, Enumeration District 125, 14th Ward, city of Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, page 39A, 9 June 1880). Isaac's stone gives a birth date of 1869, but he appears on the 1860 census as an infant. In addition, his age of the 1870, 1880, 1900 census consistantly places his birth in 1859.
