JACOB HARVEY COURSEN3

260 . JACOB "HARVEY" COURSEN4 (Hannah Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1), was born 25 December 1846 in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 11 February 1908 (Marksboro Presbyterian Church Cemetery; Murcko 1996-98). He was known as J. Harvey Coursen. Harvey's father, Jacob L. Coursen, died of consumption (tuberculosis) on 13 March 1848 (Marksboro Presbyterian Church Cemetery; Murcko 1996-1998; Warren Journal, 28 March 1848). Harvey was two months past his first birthday when his father died. He grew up on the family's farm in Frelinghuysen Township. He appears on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census as Jacob H. Coursen. During those years he was a resident of his mother's home near Kerr's Corner in Frelinghuysen (1850 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 484, 27 & 29 July 1850; 1860 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 207, 18 July 1860; 1870 United States Federal Census, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 73B-74A, 30 July 1870, Post Office Vienna). In 1874, J.H. Coursen was listed as a land owner in Frelinghuysen Township on the 1874 Beers County Atlas of Warren County New Jersey. He owned land in District 61. The Coursen farms in district 61 were on the road running south and west out of Kerr's Corner. They were on the northern side of the road. As one traveled away from Kerr's Corner one passed first the farm of J. Harvey's brother Isaac "Marshall" Coursen, then of J. Harvey and finally that of his mother Hannah Coursen.

J. Harvey married Anna Maria Hoagland in about 1879. She was born October 1859 in New Jersey and died 1932 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5A, 12 June 1900; Marksboro Presbyterian Church Cemetery; Murcko 1996-98). In 1880, Jacob and Anna lived on a farm in Frelinghuysen Township, probably the same one that appeared on the 1874 Beers
County Atlas of Warren County New Jersey. The couple had one child, a three month old son named Frank. J. Harvey's 73 year old mother, Hannah Read Coursen also lived with the couple (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 193, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 319B, 4 June 1880). The 1887 Warren County History and Directory lists J.H. Coursen as a farmer living in Frelinghuysen Township. His post office was given as Marksboro.

J. Harvey and Anna had a second child in August 1896. Her name was Anna Mae, although she was known as Mae. In 1900, J. Harvey, Anna, Frank and Mae (Anna M. on the census) lived in Frelinghuysen. J. Harvey was a farmer. Anna and Jacob's son Frank was 20. He was away at school. Mae was not quite four when the census was enumerated. She was a home with her mother. The Coursens owned their farm free and clear of all mortgages (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 5A, 12 June 1900—J. Harvey's name on the census is given as "Jacob H. Coursen").

Five and half years after the 1900 census, J. Harvey and Anna's son Frank married Bessie Griffith on the 6th of March 1906. Bessie was expecting the couple's first child (a daughter named Jane who was born in August 1908) when J. Harvey Coursen died. His death occurred on 11 February 1908, about a month and a half after his 62nd birthday. Anna and her 13 year old daughter Mae were still living in Frelinghuysen Township when the 1910 census was enumerated. According to the census Anna was a widow who lived off her own income. She owned the family farm free and clear of all mortgages (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 125, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 6B, 23 April 1910). Four years later, Mae married Charles Swinson. The wedding took place on 5 August 1914, about two weeks before Mae's 18th birthday.

Anna Coursen continued to live with her daughter after Mae married Charles Swinson. In 1920, Anna lived with the Swinsons in their home at 53 Greendell Road in Green Township, Sussex County, just over the line from Frelinghuysen Township. Charles and Mae's first son, Wilfred was born about a month after the census was enumerated (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 184, Green Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, page 3A, 16 January 1920; Murcko 1996-98). By 1930, Anna had three more grandchildren, in addition to Frank's daughter Jane Coursen and Mae's son Wilfred Swinson. Frank and his wife Bessie had two children in the early 1920s: Anna (1920) and Frank, Jr. (1922). Mae had another son named Harold in 1922 (Murcko 1996-98; Social Security Death Index).

Anna remained with her daughter Mae Swinson in Green Township, Sussex County, New Jersey until her death in 1932 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 19-11, Green Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, sheet 1A, 2 April 1930). She was buried with J. Harvey in Marksboro Presbyterian Church Cemetery, which is located behind the old Presbyterian church on New Jersey Route 94 in the village of Marksboro in Frelinghuysen Township. The monument on their grave is inscribed with their names and the names of their children Frank and Mae. Frank and Mae's birth dates are given, but no death dates are included. Frank died in 1957 in Tunkhannock, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania. Mae died in 1998. She was a resident of Greendell in Sussex County, New Jersey when she died. It is probable that neither Frank nor Mae are buried in Marksboro. The Coursen grave was visited on 14 April 2005. Use link below to Photo Album to access pictures of the family monument.

Frank and Anna Coursen had 2 children who were born between 1880 and 1896. They had 5 grandchildren who were born between 1908 and 1922. Total identified descendants equals 7.

CHILDREN OF JACOB HARVEY COURSEN AND ANNA MARIA HOAGLAND:

608. (i.) FRANK LESLIE COURSEN, Sr.5, was born 9 March 1880 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 December 1957 (Murcko 1996-98). He married on 6 March 1906, Elizabeth "Bessie" Griffith, the daughter of David D. Griffith and Jane Williams. She was born 24 July 1878 in Pennsylvania and died unknown (Griffith n.d.). Frank's name is inscribed on his parents monument in Marksboro Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. However, Frank and Bessie lived most of their married life in West Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Frank died in 1957 in Tunkhannock, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania (Murcko 1996-98)—Wyoming County is adjacent to Luzerne County. It is highly unlikely that he is buried in Marksboro. Bessie's name is not inscribed on the Marksboro monument. The Coursen monument in Marksboro was visited on 14 April 2005 (use photo album link above to view a photograph of the monument).

609. (ii.) ANNA "MAE" COURSEN5, was born 22 August 1896 in Warren County, New Jersey, probably in Frelinghuysen Township and died 15 January 1998 in Sussex County, New Jersey (Murcko 1996-98; Social Security Death Index). She married on 5 August 1914, Charles Carl Swinson (Murcko 1996-98), the son of Swedish immigrants. He was born circa 1891 in New Jersey and died unknown.Mae's final residence was Greendell, Sussex, New Jersey. Her social security card was issued through the Railroad Board before 1951 (Social Security Death Index). Mae's name is inscribed on her parents monument in Marksboro Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Marksboro, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey. It is highly unlikely that she is buried in Marksboro. Also, Charles's name is not inscribed on the Marksboro monument. The Coursen monument in Marksboro was visited on 14 April 2005 (use photo album link above to view a photograph of the monument).
