CATHERINE ORILLA HAVENS JONES5

3043. CATHERINE ORILLA HAVENS5 (Margaret Ann Read4, Isaac Read, III3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 15 December 1857 in Illinois, probably in Prairie Township, McDonough and died 29 June 1928, possibly in Idaho (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). Catherines' father died sometime between 1857 and 1860. In June 1860, Catherine was two years old and she lived with her widowed mother on their farm in Prairie Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Prairie City Township, McDonough County, Illinois, page 439, 13 June 1860). Her mother remarried by 1867. In 1870 "Orilla," as she is called on the census, lived in Bushnell Township, McDonough County with her mother and her step-father Henry Angle. She attended school during the census year (1870 United States Federal Census, Bushnell Township, McDonough County, Illinois, page 375, 2 August 1870). She married on 4 September 1879 Thomas Jefferson Jones, the son of Fauntleroy Jones and Dianna Haffner. Thomas's parents were from Virginia, but had migrated to Illinois before the Civil War. Thomas was born 9 April 1858 in Astoria, Fulton County, Illinois and died unknown.

The couple initially settled in Kansas. Their daughter Alma Pearl was born there about eight months after the wedding. The 1880 census places the family of T.J. and Orilla Jones (as given in the census) in Oak Township, Smith County, Kansas. They daughter "Pearl" was listed as a one month old infant. Thomas was a farmer (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 309, Oak Township, Smith County, Kansas, page 453B, 1 June 1880). The family still lived in Kansas in September 1881 when their second child and daughter was born (Maude). They moved to Nebraska by August 1883. Their son Clyde was born in Nebraska at that date (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). The 1885 state census for Nebraska places the family in Centre Township, Buffalo County, Nebraska (Ancestry.com, the enumeration date is given as 10 June 1885). The family was still in Nebraska in August 1895 when the youngest child Ruth was born (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.).

According to the 1910 census, Orilla Havens Jones was a recent widow. She indicated that she had been married 31 years, which would place the marriage in 1879 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910). However, Orilla and Thomas were probably divorced by 1910. Thomas J. Jones appears on the 1910 census as a resident of a rented house at 111 South 20th Street in Omaha, Nebraska. He was married to his second wife, Estella Wood Richards. This was also Estella's second marriage. The couple had been married for a year. According to the census, Thomas, who was 52, was not employed. Nor was Estella, who was 39. The census states that she was the mother of one child who had died before 1910, it is not known if this was a child by her first or second marriage. Estella's mother, Elizabeth Wood, lived with the couple. She was a 75 year old widow and the mother of three children (one of whom had died before 1910). Both Estella and her mother were born in New York. The census gives Thomas's birth place as Illinois and that of both his parents as Virginia (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 23, 4th Ward, Precinct 1, Omaha City, Douglas County, Idaho, Nebraska, sheet 6B, 23 April 1910: Haffner 2001).

"Orilla C. Jones" is listed twice in the 1910 census as a resident of Fremont and Lemhi counties in Idaho. The earlier of the two listings, dated 15 and 16 April, places her in the Dubois Precinct of Fremont County. She was listed as the head of household and had one of her minor children with her, her 14 year old daughter Ruth. Orilla also shared her home with her eldest daughter Alma and her husband Eli Light. Three of the couple's children were also in the house: Bud (or Eli, Jr. who was 10), Erie (age 8) and Chester (age 4). The two older Light children had been born in Nebraska, while Chester was born in Idaho. Eli Light was employed as a Locomotive Engineer. The family lived in a rented home (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910). Sometime during the 1910 census year, Orilla and Ruth Jones moved to a house on River Street in Salmon City, Idaho. They were joinned by Orilla's youngest son Wilbur Jones (age 17). Salmon City was in Lemhi County, Idaho. Orilla's half brother, John Angle and his family lived nearby in the mining town of Banester. In Salmon City, Orilla was employed as a laborer doing general house work. Where she worked (a private home or hotel or other locale) was not listed in the census. Orilla owned her home, but it was mortgaged (1910 United States Federal Census, District 198, Banester Precinct, Lemhi County, Idaho, sheet 13 B, 13 May 1910 and Enumeration District 230, Salmon City Precinct, Lemhi County, Idaho, sheet 10A, 2 May 1910).

Catherine Orilla Havens Jones died 29 June 1928 (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). It is possible that she lived in Lemhi County, Idaho at the time of her death. Her son Wilbur Jones married in about 1925 and settled down as a rancher in Lemhi County (1930 United States Census, Enumeration District 30-24, Yearianville Precinct, Lemhi County, Idaho, sheet 4A, 2 May 1930). Wilbur died lived in Idaho until his death in September 1975. His last residence was in Salmon City (Social Security Death Index).

CHILDREN OF CATHERINE ORILLA HAVENS AND THOMAS JEFFERSON JONES:

3044. (i.) ALMA PEARL JONES6, was born 28 April 1880 in Kansas, possibly in Oak Township, Smith County and died April 1983 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama (Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). "Pearl Jones" appears on the 1880 census as a one month old child living with her parents on their farm in Smith County, Kansas (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 309, Oak Township, Smith County, Kansas, page 453B, 1 June 1880). The family moved to Nebraska after Alma's sister Maude was born in September 1881, but before her bother Clyde was born in August 1883 (1885 Nebraska State Census, Ancestry.com). Alma grew up in Nebraska and was married in North Platte, Lincoln County, Nebraska on the fourth of July 1899 to Eli Budd Light, Sr., the son of James Light and Lucinda Moore. Eli was born 27 January 1872 in Oaktown, Knox County, Indiana (he had a twin, Rachel Bell Light Conger, who died 8 May 1955 in Fleming, Logan County, Colorado). Eli died after 1947 in High Point Guilford County, North Carolina (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). Alma and Eli lived in Nebraska until at least 1902. Their son Eli and daughter Erie were born there in 1900 and 1902, respectively. They appear on the 1900 census as residents of Alexis Township, Butler County, Nebraska. Eli's occupation was given as farm laborer. Their son Eli, Jr. was listed on the census as a two month old infant. According to the census they did not live on a farm, but the census does not indicate whether they owned their home or not (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1, Alexis Township, Butler County, Ohio, sheet 3B, 12 June 1900). The family had moved to Idaho by 1905 when their son Chester was born. In 1910, they lived in a rented home in the Dubois Precinct of Fremont County. Alma's mother Orilla Jones lived with them. Orilla was listed as the head of household. One of Alma's sisters, 14 year old Ruth jones also lived in the household. The light family included Alma and her husband Eli Light, and the couple's three children: Bud (or Eli, Jr. who was 10), Erie (age 8) and Chester (age 4). Eli Light was employed as a Locomotive Engineer (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910). Alma's mother and sister moved out of the house sometime before May of 1910 and settled in Salmon City, Lemhi County, Idaho (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 230, Salmon City Precinct, Lemhi County, Idaho, sheet 10A, 2 May 1910). The family lived in Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida when World War I began. Their eldest son, Eli Light, Jr. (spelled Ely in the records) was killed in action on 8 June 1918 in the Battle of Belleau Woods in France. He was buried in a cemetery in Aisne-Marne (Mother's Pilgramage). Eli Light, Sr. appears to have been so grief striken by his son's death that he went and filled out a draft registration card on 12 September 1918. The registration card gives his birth date as 7 January and his age as 45. He resided in Melbourne, Florida and worked for the Union Cyress Company in Hopkins, Brevard County, Florida. His wife's name was given as Alma Pearl Light. The registration card described Eli as of medium height and build with blue eyes and dark hair. Eli registered in front of Frank Powell who was with the local draft board in Titusville, Brevard County, Florida (World War I draft registration card). By 1920, Eli, Alma, Erie and Chester had moved to Plowden Mill Township in Clarendon County, South Carolina. The family was renting a farm, while Eli tried his hand at farming. Chester light was 14 years old and was still in school, neither Alma or Erie were employed (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 116, Plowden Mill Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina, sheet 2A-2B, 19 February 1920). Two additional children were born in South Carolina: Catherine Maude Light on 28 January 1923 (Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spenser n.d.; Watts n.d.) and Charles James Light on 17 January 1925. Charles died on 25 May 1928, he was badly burned and died as a result of the injury. His neice, three and half year old Mary Alma McFadden (daughter of his sister Erie) also died on the same day (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). The family still lived in High Point in 1930. They owned a home valued at $4,200 at 401 Barker Street. The Light household in 1930 included Eli, Alma and their 7 year old daughter Catherine, as well as 22 year old Valia Lee and her 23 month old son Edwin Lee. The Lees were boarders. Eli worked as a sander in a furniture factory. Valia Lee was an inspector in a hoisery mill (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-51, Ward 1, High Point City, Guilford County, North Carolina, sheet 20A, 16 April 1930). Eli Light died in High Point sometime after 1947 (Spenser n.d.). Alma and Catherine moved to Montgomery, Montfomery County, Alabama after his death. Alma was there in 1965 when her social security card was issued. She died in Montgomery in 1983 at the age of 103. Catherine Light never married. She was issued her social security card by the railraod board before 1951. Catherine was living in Montgomery at the time of her death in 2000, she was 77 years old (Social Secuirty Death Index). Children of Alma Pearl Jones and Eli Bud Light:

3059. (i.) PFC ELY BUDD LIGHT, Jr.7, was born 30 March 1900 in Nebraska, probably in Alexis Township, Butler County and was killed in action 7 June 1918, Battle of Belleau Woods, France. He first appears on the census in 1900 as a two month old infant living with his parents in Butler County, Nebraska (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1, Alexis Township, Butler County, Ohio, sheet 3B, 12 June 1900). In 1910, he was a 10 year old school boy. He lived with his grandmother Jones, his parents, his sister Erie and brother Chester in Fremont County, Idaho (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910). By 1918, the Lights had moved to Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida. Eli entered the army during World War I from the state of Pennsylvania. He served as a Private First Class, U.S. Army 12th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division and was killed 7 June 1918 during the Battle of Belleau Woods in France. He was buried in Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial, Belleau, Aisne, France, Plot A, Row 10, Grave 48 (American Battle Monuments Commission; Haffner 2001; Mothers Pilgrimage; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.).

3060. (ii.) ERIE ANN LIGHT7, was born 23 February 1902 in Nebraska and died unknown (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). Her family moved to Idaho before the birth of her brother Chester in 1905. Erie appears on the 1910 census as a 8 year old school girl. Erie lived with her grandmother Jones, her parents, and brothers Eli and Chester in Fremont County, Idaho (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910). By 1918, the Lights had moved to Melbourne, Brevard County, Florida (World War I draft registration card for Eli Light, Sr.). The family moved again before 1920. This time they settled in Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina. The Lights were renting a farm. Erie lived at home with her parents, but was no longer attending school. The 1920 census gives her place of birth as Idaho (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 116, Plowden Mill Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina, sheet 2A-2B, 19 February 1920). Erie's mother had two more children in South Carolina: Catherine Maude Light on 28 January 1923 and Charles James Light on 17 January 1925 (Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spenser n.d.; Watts n.d.). Erie was married 11 months after her sister Catherine was born. She married in Clarendon County on 20 December 1923, Joseph "Joe" Dudley McFadden. He was born 7 June 1880 in Harvin, South Carolina (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). In 1930, the McFaddens lived on a farm on Highway no. 26 in Plowden Mills Township. Joe McFadden was a general farm. They owned their farm, but did not own a radio. The McFaddens had two living children, Margaret and Joe (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 14-22, Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina, sheet 8A, 7 April 1930). Their daughter Mary Alma had died in 1928 at the age of three and a half. Children of Erie Light and Joe McFadden:

3067. (i.) MARY ALMA McFADDEN8, was born 15 September 1924 probably in Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina and died 25 May 1928. She died the same day as her uncle Charles Light who was a few months younger than her. Charles Light was burned to death so it is very possible that both children were killed in a fire (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.).

3068. (ii.) MARGARET LENORE McFADDEN8, was born 18 January 1927 probably in Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina and died unknown (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). She appears on the 1930 census as a three year old child living with her parents and brother Joe on the family farm in Plowden Mills (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 14-22, Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina, sheet 8A, 7 April 1930).

3069. (iii.) JOSEPH DAVIS McFADDEN8, was born 18 May 1928 probably in Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina and died unknown (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). He appears on the 1930 census as a twenty-two month old child living with his parents and sister Margaret on the family farm in Plowden Mills (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 14-22, Plowden Mills Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina, sheet 8A, 7 April 1930).

3061. (iii.) CHESTER CARL LIGHT7, was born 16 July 1905 in Idaho and died unknown (Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). Chester apppears on the 1910 census as a four year old child living with his grandmother Jones, his parents, his brother Eli and sister Erie in Fremont County, Idaho (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Dubois Precinct, Fremont County, Idaho, sheet 1B, 15 and 16 April 1910). Chester lived at home with his parents and attended school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 116, Plowden Mill Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina, sheet 2A-2B, 19 February 1920). Chester's mother had two more children in South Carolina: Catherine Maude Light on 28 January 1923 and Charles James Light on 17 January 1925 (Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spenser n.d.; Watts n.d.). Chester married about two years after Charles was born. He married on 2 April 1927, Allene Nance. She was born 29 October 1904 in North Carolina and died 28 September 1992 in North Carolina (Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). The couple did not have children in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-52, Second Ward, High Point City, High Point Township, Guilford County, North Carolina, sheet 17B, 14 April 1930). Chester and Allene appear to have lived most if not all of their married lives in High Point. Allene was living in High Point at the time of her death in September 1992 (Social Security Death Index).

3062. (iv.) CATHERINE MAUDE LIGHT7, was born 28 January 1923 in Plowden Mill Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina and died 8 October 2000, probably in Montgomery, Montgomery County, Alabama (Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). In 1930, Catherine was 7 and lived with her parents at 401 Baker Street in High Point, North Carolina. She was in school in 1930 (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 41-51, Ward 1, High Point City, Guilford County, North Carolina, sheet 20A, 16 April 1930). Catherine never married. Her social security card was issued before 1951 by the Railroad Board. She was living in Montgomery, Alabama when she died in October 2000. She may have been in Alabama as early as 1965, as her mother Alma Jones Light was living there in that year. It is possible that Catherine lived with her mother for the majority of her life (Social Security Death Index).

3063. (v.) CHARLES JAMES LIGHT7, was born 17 January 1925 in Plowden Mill Township, Clarendon County, South Carolina and died 25 May 1928. He and his neice Mary Alma McFadden both died on the same day (Mary Alma was three and a half). 3045. (ii.) MAUDE CECIL JONES6, was born 11 September 1881 in Kansas, possibly in Oak Township, Smith County (where her parents lived in 1880) and 16 September 1974 in Denver, Denver County, Colorado (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 309, Oak Township, Smith County, Kansas, page 453B, 1 June 1880; Haffner 2001; Social Security Death Index; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). He did not own his farm, but was renting it (1910 United States Federa Census, Enumeration District 247, Precinct 10, Weldona, Morgan County, Colorado, sheet 7A, 10 May 1910). By 1920, the family had moved to another part of Morgan County. They owned their home, but it was mortgaged. Two of their three children were still alive: Edythe and Wilbur. Their son Carl had died in 1917. Jesse was employed as a tractor operator on the large farms in the area (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 205, Orchard Precinct No. 9, Morgan County, Colorado, sheet 11B, 2 and 3 February 1920 (birth location for Jesse from 1920 census); Haffner 2001; Spencer n.d.; Watts n.d.). By 1930, both of the Etchinson children were married. Jess and Maude Etchinson resided in Sedgwick County, Colorado. They rented their home and had a radio. Jess was unemployed in 1930. He normally worked as a farmer. The Etchhisons had a boarder in 1930, 52 year old Helen Watson. She was a widow and was probably related to Ruth Watson, Wilbur Etchison's wife (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 58-10, Precinct No. 9, 10.45 to 10.46 Township, Sedgwick County, Colorado, sheet 1B, 3 April 1930). Maude's social security card was issued Colorado before 1951. She resided in Denver in 1974 at the time of her death (Social Security Death Index). Children of Maude Jones and Jesse Etchinson:
