ARTHUR BRADLEY RAUB5

3082. ARTHUR BRADLEY RAUB5 (Sarah Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 10 May 1858 in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa and died 19 August 1909 (Brossart n.d.a and n.d.b.; Muscatine County IAGenWeb). He was the eldest surving child of Sarah Martin by her second husband William "Harrison" Raub (Anon 1879:608).

Arthur first appears on the census in 1860 as a two year old child living with his parents, his half-siblings Mary and Baltis Keen and his foster sister Annie McMurphy in Sweetland Township (1860 United States Federal Census, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, page 528, 30 June 1860, P.O Melpine, Iowa). By 1870, he was 13 years old and was attending school. He still lived at home on the family farm in Sweetland Township. The Raub household in 1870 included his half-brother Baltis Ernest Keen, his now adopted sister Annie McMurphy Raub and his brother Orrin Raub. (1870 United States Federal Census, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, page 304, 11 August 1870, P.O Wilton, Iowa). Arthur was still at home in 1880. He was no longer in school and was employed on the family farm as a farm laborer. His younger brother Orrin was the only one of his siblings still living at home (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 244, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, page 103A, 8 June 1880).

Arthur married Mary L. Day, on 19 December 1883, in Muscatine County, Iowa. Mary was the daughter of Josiah Day and Phoebe J. Minton. She was born 4 Januay 1861 in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Her father's family had come form Morris County, New Jersey and settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania before he was born. Both of Mary's parents were born in the county. They settled in Muscatine County in 1866 when Mary was five years old (Anon 1889:267; Iowa Marriages; Muscatine County IAGenWeb).

Arthur and Mary appear with four of their children on the 1895 Iowa state census. They were residents of Sweetland Township. Arthur's widower father probably lived with the family (1895 Iowa State Census). The 1900 federal census provides additional information about the family. According to the census, Arthur and Mary had been married 17 years and were the parents of 7 children, only 4 of whom were still living in 1900. The family's four living children in 1900 were Clarence, Gertie, Bessie and Herbert. They owned their farm free and clear of mortgages. They also had a boarder, Elberta Knopp, who was a 21 year old school teacher. The census taker visited the household the day after the birth of Arthur and Mary's youngest child, Mary Elberta. She is not listed on the 1900 census as her birth occurred after the 1 June 1900 cut off date (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 112, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4B, 9 June 1900).

Arthur Raub died on 19 August 1909 and was buried in Melpine Cemetery, Pleasant Prairie, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa. Mary Raub was 48 years old when her husband died. She was left with four children to raise, ranging in age from 8 to 24. She was also left with the farm to manage—the farm that her in-laws, Harrison and Sarah (Martin) Raub had developed. In 1910, Mary was listed on the census as the farm manager. Her 25 year old son Clarence, was listed as a general farmer. Her 23 year old daughter Gertie was not employed and was still at home. Gertie would marry Eugene Hetzler in two years. Mary's next daughter, 21 year old Bessie, was a teacher in the public schools. She would marry Moses Moorehead in three years time. Mary's youngest son, Herbert, was 18 years old and was still in school. Her youngest child, 9 year old Mary was also in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 22 April 1910).

Mary's death date as given on the two cemetery transcripts I consulted is 15 January 1926. She was buried with Arthur in Melpine Cemetery (Martin-Rott n.d.; Muscatine County IAGenWeb). However, she was not a resident of the households of any of her children in 1920. Clarence was married to Ethel Parvin in 1920 and had one child. He appears to have been living on the original family homestead in Sweetland. His youngest sister Mary was a resident of his household, but his mother was not (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 14 January 1920). Herbert Raub was also married, to Genevieve Moorehead, and was the father of two children. He also lived in Sweetland Township. Mary was not a resident of his household (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 9A, 4 February 1920). The two oldest Raub daughters were married. Gertrude Hetzler lived with her husband Eugene and four children in Wilton Township (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 3A, 9 January 1920). And, Bessie Moorehead lived with her husband Moses and two children in Fulton Township (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 113, Fulton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5B, 20 January 1920). Mary did not reside with either daughter. Where she lived during the last 16 years of her life is currently unknown.

Marys father died in 1909 when she was eight years old. In 1910, when the census was taken, her mother was the head of the household and she was also managing the farm. All of Mary's brothers and sisters lived at home. Her eldest brother Clarence ran the farm with their mother. Her sister Gertie was keeping house for the family and her sister Bessie was teaching school. Mary and her brother Herbert were in school (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 22 April 1910). In 1920, Mary lived with her brother Clarence and his family on their farm in Sweetland Township. The census gives her age as 18. She was not in school nor was she employed (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 14 January 1920). However, despite the fact that she was not listed as being in school on the 1920 census, she may be the Mary E. Raub who graduated from Muscatine High school in 1921 (Auroran 1921). Mary still lived with her brother Clarence in 1930. The Raub family was in Sweetland. Mary was unmarried and was employed as a public school teacher (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-24, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 3B, 9 April 1930).
