3084. BION E. MARTIN5 (David R. Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born January 1858 in Sycamore, Wyandot County, Ohio and died 1927 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 132, Village of Sycamore, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, sheet 8B, 5 June 1900, census gives his name as Byron; Wyandot County, Ohio GenWeb). He appears on the 1860 census as a two year old child living with his parents in Sycamore, Wyandot County, Ohio (1860 United States Federal Census, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 421, 21 July 1860). His father enlisted in the 15th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company G in April 1861, a few months after Bion's 3rd birthday. The 15th was a 90 day regiment, and when David Martin's enlistment was up, he immediately re-enlisted in the 49th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company K in September 1861 (1890 United States Federal Census, Special Schedule Surviving Soldiers, Saliors, and Marines, and widows, etc., Enumeration District 62, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 8 of township). David Martin never returned home, he died a few months later in camp (NPS; Union Brick). Bion and his younger brother David were raised by their mother Drusilla Martin in the town of Sycamore, Ohio. In 1870, the family lived in their own home and Bion and David attended school (1870 United States Federal Census, Sycamore, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 834, 24 June 1870, Post Office Carey, Ohio). The Martins were still in Sycamore in 1880. Bion was 22 and David was 20, both young men were teaching school (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 161, Sycamore, Wyandot County, Ohio, page 437C).
Bion married about two years after the 1880 census. His wife was Rosa B. (Last Name Unknown). She was born October 1858 in California. Her father was a native of New Jersey and her mother of New York. The couple remained in Sycamore, Ohio after their marriage. By 1900, they owned a home in the village, free and clear of mortgages. Bion was employed as a carpenter, but had been out of work for 4 months during the 1900 census year. He and Rosa were the parents of three children—Vinton, Laura and David Everitt—all of whom were living at home in 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 132, Village of Sycamore, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, sheet 8B, 5 June 1900, census gives his name as Byron).
The Martin home in Sycamore was on Saffel Avenue. Bion was still employed as a house carpenter in 1910, although he was unemployed at the time of the census. The household included Bion and Rosa and their three children: Vinton, Laura and David (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 186, Village of Sycamore, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, sheet 8A, 22 April 1910). He remained in the armed services until 1919 (Anon 1926). When he returned from the war Vinton, who was still single, settled in with his parents in their Saffel Street home. Neither of his siblings had married while he was in France and they were still at home. The 1920 census shows Rosa and Bion at home with all three of their children. Only Vinton and Laura were employed; Everitt was not employed, nor was he in school. Bion Martin was still employed as a carpenter. He and Rosa owned their home, but it was mortgaged (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 180, Village of Sycamore, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, sheet 9B, 21 January 1920, census gives his name as Byron).
Vinton Martin married in about 1923. He and his wife Mabel settled in their own home in Sycamore. They had two daughters—Mary and Clara Belle—who were born in 1925 and 1928. Bion died in 1927 before Clara Belle was born. He and was buried in Old Sycamore Cemetery with his parents and brothers (Wyandot County, Ohio GenWeb). Rosa continued to live with her daughter Laura and son Everitt in the family home on Saffel Avenue, which by 1930 was known as East Saffel Avenue. The house was valued at $2,000. Laura Martin was listed as the head-of-household. The census was enumerated by Rosa's daughter-in-law, Mabel Martin (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 88-20, Village of Sycamore, Sycamore Township, Wyandot County, Ohio, sheet 1A, 7 April 1930).
