DARIUS VAUGHN MARTIN5 (Philetus Bradley Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 25 March 1867 in Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey (LDS Batch #C509751) and died unknown. Darius grew-up in Warren County New Jersey. In 1870, he lived with his parents and sister Minnie on their farm in Hardwick Township, New Jersey (1870 United States Census, Hardwick Township, Warren County, New Jersey, pages 147-148, 1 August 1870, Post Office Columbia, the census gives his name as "Derious"). By 1880, the family had moved to a farm in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County (1880 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 193, Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey, page 319A, 3 June 1880). Darius's parents separated sometime between 1880 (when Darius was 13) and 1900. They may even have been divorced by 1900 (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 2 June 1900).

Darius married in about 1891, Harriet (Last Name Unknown). She was born circa 1870 in New Jersey. They had four sons, three of whom had been born by the time of the 1900 census—Vaughn, John and Alan. The family is listed as residents of Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey in 1900. They lived in a rented house. Darius, or "Vaughn D." as he was called in the census, worked as a cigar maker. Darius's mother and sister Minnie Martin also lived with the family. Minnie worked as a school teacher. According to the census, Sarah Martin was a widow, but Darius's father was still alive in 1900 and was probably living in Warren County. Sarah and P. Bradley Martin were either separated or divorced. Sarah Martin was not employed (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 2 June 1900).

By 1910, John and Harriet had four sons (Connard had been born since the last census). They lived in a rented house at 290 Bloomfield Avenue in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey. Daruis worked as a saleman for a scale manufacturing factory (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 155, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 21A, 27 April 1910). Daruis's sister Minnie had married in late 1908 or early 1909. She and her husband, Charles Williams, and their infant daughter lived in Midland Park in Bergen County, New Jersey. Darius and Minnie's mother, Sarah Martin, had left Daruis's home and had moved in with his sister Minnie (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 18, Midland Park Borough, Bergen County, New Jersey, sheet 13B, 27 April 1910). Their father, P. Bradley Martin resided in Blairstown in Warren County and had recently remarried (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 123, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey, sheet 9B, 28 April 1910).

Darius and Harriet were still renting 290 Bloomfield Avenue in 1920. Only one of their children resided at home—25 year old John Douglas. Darius was employed as a saleman, John was an electrician (1920 United States Federal Census, 3rd Ward, Enumeration District 155, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 21 January 1920).

Darius and Sarah Martin had 4 children who were born between 1892 and 1900, and at least 5 grandchildren who were born between 1916 and 1925. Total identified descendants equals 9.

CHILDREN OF DARIUS and HARRIET MARTIN:

3116. (i.) VAUGHN FOSTER MARTIN6, was born 21 November 1892 in Newark, Essex County New Jersey and died 4 June 1993 in Seminole County, Florida (Florida Death Index, his name is given as "Vaughan"; Social Security Death Index, his name is given as "Vaughn"; World War I Draft Registration Card A, No. 80). In 1900, he was the only Martin child who was in school. His family lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey in a rented house. The household included Vaughn, his parents, his Grandmother Martin and his brothers John and Alan (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 2 June 1900). The family was still in Bloomfield in 1910. Their house was at 290 Bloomfield Avenue. Vaughn (called Foster in the census) was employed as a collecter by the gas company. He was out of work for six weeks in 1909 (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 155, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 21A, 27 April 1910). Vaughn married circa 1914, Margaret M. (last name unknown). She was born circa 1897 in New Jersey and died unknown. Her father was a native of New Jersey and her mother was an Irish immigrant. They were probably married in New Jersey. By 1917 they were living in New York State. Vaughn registered for the World War I draft on 29 May 1917 in Binghampton, Binghampton County, New York. He and Margaret lived at 12 Blanchard Avenue in Binghampton. Vaughan (as he spelled his name on the draft registration) was employed as a salesman by Colgate & Co., which was based in Jersey City, New Jersey. He claimed an exemption from the draft becase he had a wife and child to support. The child was his infant son Vaughan C. Martin. The draft registration described Vaughn as tall and of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair (World War I Draft Registration Card A, No. 80). According to the 1930 census, Vaughn did not serve in the armed forces during World War I. In 1930, Vaughn and Margaret lived at 605 Summit Avenue in Syracuse, Onodaga County, New York. They owned their house, which was valued at $9,000 and they owned a radio. Vaughn was employed as a salesman by a soap company, he was probably still working for Colgate. The couple had four children, the three older children were all in school (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34-86, Block 1216, 13th Ward, City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, sheet 16B, 2 April 1930). Vaughn's social security number was issued in New York before 1951. His final residence was 1756 Hollywood Avenue, Winter Park, Orange County, Florida (Social Security Death Index). He died in Florida in 1993 a little over six months after his 100th birthday. Children of Vaughn and Margaret Martin:

3292. (i.) First Lieutenaut VAUGHN C. MARTIN7, was born circa 1916 in New York, possibly in Binghampton, Broome County and was killed in action 7 March 1943 in North Africa, during World War II. His parents resided at 12 Blanchard Avenue in Binghampton in 1917. By 1930, they had moved to 605 Summit Avenue in Syracuse, New York. Vaughn lived there with his family and attended school with his sisters Margaret and Marion (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34-86, Block 1216, 13th Ward, City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, sheet 16B, 2 April 1930). Vaughn entered the United States Army from Onondaga County during World War II. He was in the Unitesd States Army and served as a First Lieutenaut in the 813th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He was killed in action during the war and was buried in Plot H, Row 5, Grave 13 North Africa American Cemetery, Carthage, Tunisia. Vaughn was awarded the Purple Heart (ID: O-420813; American Battle Monuments Commission; National World War II Memorial).

3293. (ii.) MARGARET M. MARTIN7, was born circa 1919 in New York and died unknown. In 1930, she lived with her parents in their house at 605 Summit Avenue in Syracuse, New York. She attended school during the school year with her brother Vaughn and her sister Marion (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34-86, Block 1216, 13th Ward, City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, sheet 16B, 2 April 1930).

3294. (iii.) MARION H. MARTIN7, was born circa 1921 in New York and died unknown. In 1930, she lived with her parents in their house at 605 Summit Avenue in Syracuse, New York. She attended school during the school year with her brother Vaughn and her sister Margaret (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34-86, Block 1216, 13th Ward, City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, sheet 16B, 2 April 1930).

In 1930, she lived with her parents in their house at 605 Summit Avenue in Syracuse, New York (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 34-86, Block 1216, 13th Ward, City of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, sheet 16B, 2 April 1930).

3117. (ii.) JOHN DOUGLAS MARTIN6, was born 26 June 1894 in New Jersey, probably in Essex County and died 11 June 1990 (Social Security Death Index). In 1900, his family lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey in a rented house. The household included John, his parents, his Grandmother Martin and his brothers Vaughn and Alan (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 2 June 1900). The family was still in Bloomfield in 1910, at 290 Bloomfield Avenue. John attended school in Bloomfield (1910 United States Federal Census, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 155, sheet 21A, 27 April 1910, the census gives his name as Douglas). John lived at home with his parents in 1920. He was the only one of their chldren who was still at home. He was a self-employed electrician (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 21, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 13A, 21 January 1920, the census gives his name as John D.). His social security number was issued in New Jersey before 1951 (Social Security Death Index).

3118. (iii.) ALLEN (or ALAN) T. MARTIN6, was born 26 September 1896 in New Jersey, probably in Essex County and died March 1985 (Social Security Death Index). In 1900, his family lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey in a rented house. The household included Alan, his parents, his Grandmother Martin and his brothers Vaughn and John (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 2 June 1900). The family was still in Bloomfield in 1910, at 290 Bloomfield Avenue. John attended school in Bloomfield (1910 United States Federal Census, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 155, sheet 21A, 27 April 1910). His social security number was issued in New York before 1951. He resided in Toms River, Ocean County, New Jersey at the time of his death (Social Security Death Index)

3119. (iv.) CONNARD J. MARTIN, Sr.6, was born 10 January 1900 in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey and died July 1967, probably in Delaware (Social Security Death Index). Although he was born in 1900, he does not appear on the 1900 census (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 203, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, sheet 1B, 2 June 1900).In 1910, he lived with his parents at 290 Bloomfield Avenue in Bloomfield, Essex County, New Jersey and attended school (1910 United States Federal Census, 3rd Ward, Bloomfield Town, Essex County, New Jersey, Enumeration District 155, sheet 21A, 27 April 1910). He married circa 1921, Margaret G. (Unknown). She was born circa 1902 in New York. Her father was born in Germany, but her mother was a native of New York. They lived at 7 Gleenwood Road in the Town of Guilderland, Albany County, New York. They rented the house for $65 a month and took in a roomer to help with the family finances. The roomer was 29 year old Ann Shafer who worked as a filing clerk for a realty company. Connard was employed as a feed salesman. The couple had one son (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 1-137, Guilderland Township, Albany County, New York, sheet 3A, 3 April 1930). Connard's social security number was issued in New York before 1951. His final residence was Dover, Kent County, Delaware (Social Security Death Index). Child of Connard and Margaret Martin:
