CLARENCE ADDISON RAUB6

3095. CLARENCE ADDISON RAUB6 (Arthur Bradley Raub5, Sarah Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 11 November 1884 in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa and died 22 March 1981. He is listed as a male child in the county birth records, his parents names are given as Arthur B. Raub and Mary L. Day (Bossart n.d.; Social Security Death Index). He appears on the 1895 Iowa state census as a ten year old child living in Sweetland Township with his parents, siblings and grandfather Raub (1895 Iowa State Census). The 1900 federal census gives his age as 15 and states that he was attending school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 112, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4B, 9 June 1900).

Clarence's father died in August 1909, a few months before Clarence's 25th birthday. Eight months later, when the census was enumerated, Clarence and his mother were running the family farm together. Mary Raub was listed as the farm manager and Clarence was the farmer. All of Clarence's survivng siblings lived at home in 1910. They were Gertie, who was at home; Bessie, who was teaching school; and Herbert and Mary who were still in school. While Gertie, Bessie and Herbert were all 18 or older, little Mary was only 9 years old (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 22 April 1910). She continued to live with her brother up until at least 1930. It appears in essence, that he became her second father.

Clarence married on 21 February 1918, Helen "Ethel" Parvin, the daughter of George W. and Adella Parvin. She was born 8 October 1889 in Iowa and died 17 March 1978, probably in Muscatine County (Muscatine County IAGenWeb; Powell 2001; Social Security Death Index). A 1919-1920 directory for the Sweetland area lists C. A. Raub, his wife Ethel, and one child (Loraine). According to the directory C.A. Raub was a farmer who owned 120 acres. He was located on R1, Fairport (Atkinson 1919). The 1920 census further elaborates on the directory entry. Clarence and Ethel lived in Sweetland Township with their daughter Lorraine, Clarence's sister Mary, and a live-in hired hand named Charles F. Gerard. Gerard was a 60 year old widower. He ws also a native of Iowa. The Raubs owned their farm free and clear of all mortgages and leins (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 130, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 14 January 1920).

In 1930, the couple resided with their children on a farm in Sweetland Township. They owned the farm and they also owned a radio. The couple had four children: Lorraine, Arthur, Wesley and Stanley. Clarence's youngest sister Mary lived with the family, she was teaching school in the public schools. The family also had a lodger named Fred Windman (age 45) who worked for the family as a farm hand (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-24, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 3B, 9 April 1930).

Ethel Raub died in 1978, the social security death index lists her final residence as Muscatine, Muscatine County, Iowa. Clarence was still a resident of Muscatine in 1981 when he died (Social Security Death Index). Clarence and Ethel are buried in Melpine Cemetery, Pleasant Praire, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa (Martin-Rott n.d.; Muscatine County IAGenWeb).
