READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS

GERTRUDE BELLE RAUB HETZLER6

3096. GERTRUDE BELLE "Gertie" RAUB6 (Arthur Bradley Raub5, Sarah Martin4, Lydia Read3, John Read2, Joseph Read1) was born 23 August 1886 in Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa and died 1966. She is listed as a Gertrude Belle Raub in the county birth records, her parents names are given as Arthur and Mary Raub (Bossart n.d.; Martin-Rott n.d.; Muscatine County IAGenWeb). She appears on the 1895 Iowa state census as an eight year old child living in Sweetland Township with her parents, siblings and grandfather Raub (1895 Iowa State Census). The 1900 federal census gives her age as 13 and states that she was attending school (1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 112, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4B, 9 June 1900).

Gertie's father died in August 1909, a week before her twenty-third birthday. Eight months later, when the census was enumerated, Gertie's mother and brother Clarence were running the family farm together. Mary Raub was listed as the farm manager and Clarence was the farmer. Gertie was listed with no occupation. Her sister Bessie was teaching school and her brother Herbert and youngest sister Mary were still in school. It is probable that Gertie did the housework while her mother attended to the management of the family business (1910 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 117, Sweetland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 4A, 22 April 1910).

Gertie remained at home for almost another two years until she was married on 7 February 1912 to Eugene Alonza Hetzler, the son of John and Ida Hetzler. He was born 7 January 1882, in Illinois and died 4 March 1961 (Powell 2001). His family moved to Iowa from Illinois after Eugene was born in 1882, but before the birth of his sister in Iowa in June 1885. Eugene's parents settled in Montpelier Township (1895 Iowa State Census; 1900 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 101, Montpelier Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 5A, 11 June 1900).

Gertie and Eugene settled in Wilton Township after their marriage. A 1919-1920 directory for Muscantine County list Eugene Hetzler, his wife Gertrude and children Albert, Edgar, and "Miriam" on Route 1 in Wilton. Eugene was a farmer and owned 120 acres (Atkinson 1919). In 1920, Gertie and Eugene lived with their three eldest children on a farm in Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa. They had a boarder, 15 year old Elmer Davidson, who had come from an orphanage. Elmer was attending school (1920 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 133, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 3A, 9 January 1920). The family still lived in Wilton Township in 1930. Elmer Davidson was no longer a resident of the household. Gertie and Eugene had seven children of their own: Albert, Edgar, Marian, Warren, Marvin, Herbert and Wilbur. The family owned their farm and they owned a radio (1930 United States Federal Census, Enumeration District 70-28, Wilton Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, sheet 7B, 30 April 1930). Gertie and Eugene are buried in Melpine Cemetery, Pleasant Prairie, Wilton Township, Muscantine County (Muscatine County IAGenWeb)
